Oklahoma Lions Public Relations Video
During my time with the Service Foundation, I enjoyed visiting many clubs. One of the things I often heard was
how great it would be if we had more publicity for what we do as Lions. To that end, we applied for, and received,
a Centennial grant to enable us to create a video to be used for publicity, recruiting, fundraising, etc. You
asked for it. You got it.
However, one of the caveats of receiving this $7,500 grant from LCI is that we need to match at least 20% of
that amount ($1,500) to utilize the funds. After mentioning this at the last few council meetings, at club visits, and
in the OK Lion, we received only $250 to date. $250 total in seven months.
We need your help! We are not even close. You requested more publicity; please help support the effort. This video will focus on our state
projects as well as how clubs affect their local communities. The video will be approximately 15 minutes long, and a DVD copy will be pro-
vided to every club. The DVD will also contain some PSAs of varying lengths to be used in local media as you deem appropriate. We will
also include a media packet to help you in your efforts to promote your club and your events.
Even better yet, let’s raise $5,000 to allow for a more polished and professional media piece. Obviously, we will work with what we get.
Regardless of the final amount, we cannot continue without your support. Please consider supporting this effort, either individually or
through your club (or both). Make your checks payable to Oklahoma Lions, and designate them for the Video Fund. Mail to: 4123 NW
10th St., Oklahoma City, OK 73107
Thanks for your help! We Serve!

A quick update on our screening program in public schools. The state of Oklahoma passed a law in 2006 that each year children in
the 1st, 3rd, and Kindergarten must have their eyes screened for risk factors. It was the state Health Department’s job to make the
rules on how to do this. At that time, our current screening cameras were not available, so the rules were made using the various chart
system screenings. For over the past year, we have been trying to get the rules changed to allow the current camera systems to be used.
The state health department has approved our camera screening system to be acceptable for kindergarten children. I am now in the
process of writing the screening criteria for the state health department so that it may be published in their rules. Please note that this
only includes kindergarten. We will have to develop more data comparison of the camera system and chart system for the 1st and 2nd
grades to then go back to the state health department and ask to include first and second grade students. So, the door is cracked, and we
are walking thru it. I must submit our procedures by March 9 and we should know soon
after. I do have a plan for developing the requested data on 1 & 2 grades that I hope to share
with you next month……but our state secretary has threatened me with his scissors about
space restraint. If you would like more info, please feel free to contact me..Tom Cummings

IT’S GREAT TO BE A LION
Don’t forget to register for our first district 3-
E convention on February 16 and 17. This
will be a great opportunity to visit the new
Stoney Creek Hotel and Convention Center
that just opened in Broken Arrow OK.
Our registration forms are made and available
at this time, so be sure to get yours filled and
sent in. We have a great program lined up so
you will not want to wait until the last minute.
Don’t forget to support the state projects
listed below, they need the support of all the
Lions in Oklahoma
Meadows of Hope had their annual Christ-
mas Party in Perkins OK on December 9.
Lots of Lions and guest were there with lots
of fun and food. You sure missed out if you
were not there.
Oklahoma Lions Service Foundation; don’t
forget to support this project. Marine and her
staff have been busy in trying to get the funds
raised so she can get matching funds from a
grant.
Eugene Briggs Scholarship; this is a great
opportunity for a young high school student
from our district to apply for a scholarship.
Don’t wait until the deadline to apply for this
scholarship.
Oklahoma Eye Bank is building a special
room for some new equipment for eye trans-
plants. They have shown a video of this
equipment and it is very interesting to watch.
Centennial Chairperson; I hope you all had
a wonderful holiday season and the new year
finds you and your clubs ready to wind up
this 100th year celebration with great
achievements. Yes, the Centennial Service
Challenge is still going on and there are sev-
eral clubs that have already completed three
of the four areas of need to qualify for this
fourth-year service banner patch. If your club
is not aware or hasn't participated, it is not too
late. Go to lionsclubs.org and click on mem-
ber center to find out more.
There is a banner that is available to any club
that might want to use it in conjunction with a
fundraiser or project. There are two of them
and I can UPS them to you at no cost. They
are a good way to help get out the message.
I check to see if International shows for your
club that have (or have not) reported Centen-
nial Service Challenges this Lion
year. Check to see if your records are up to
date.
This is the last year to qualify for a club ban-
ner patch and I would like to see every club
have at least one gem stone on their banner.
We all serve---let's report the service.

Club inducted 1 new member in October.
Welcome Lion Lynn! Membership remains
at approximately 20 members.
In October Tuxedo Lions Club co-hosted a
loaded baked potato lunch fundraiser with
Green Country Lions Club. We purchased
and installed new curtains and rods in our
community center building to enhance the
interior decor. We reviewed and updated our
community center building rental agreement.
Lion Wayne attended the Cabinet Meeting &
Officer Training session in Henryetta, and
received a Centennial Service Challenge
Award for the club. Lion Wayne participated
on a team consisting of members from the
local Bartlesville area Lions Clubs (Dewey,
Downtown, Green Country, Limestone, Tux-
edo) to plan the Cowboy Cadillac drawing,
and to promote local ticket sales.
In November Tuxedo Lions Club participated
in the Veteran’s Day parade, and helped host
the Cowboy Cadillac drawing held at Patriot
GMC Hyundai in Bartlesville. Our club had
16 members selling 319 tickets! We began
selling Christmas trees (as our largest fund-
raiser) on Friday, November 24.
In December Tuxedo Lions Club completed
the Christmas Tree Sales fundraiser, selling
all 225 trees! We celebrated the Christmas
holiday with a delicious pot-luck supper, and
were entertained by the Bartlesville Blend
choir singing us Christmas songs, we played
BINGO with ornament prizes, and brought
children’s toys to donate to Salvation Army.
We also rang Bells for the Salvation Army.
The Tuxedo Lions Club members continue to
mow and maintain the Tuxedo Park and club-
house as a community service, and volunteer
for various community projects such as Pack
the Backpacks, Salvation Army, and others.
Dewey Lions; Hoisted zone A meeting on
January 25 at the Washington County Adult
Center in Dewey OK. Program included top-
ics on the Briggs Scholarship by Lion Louis
Davis; Kids Sight by 2nd VDG Joe Shveima
and Centennial Projects by PDG Mike Fritz.

upcoming 3-E district convention in Broken
Arrow OK.
Holdenville Lions; The Holdenville Lions
Club had a fun December 2017. We hosted
our annual Potato Bar fundraiser on Dec. 5th
(see picture). This fundraiser gives us the
ability to grant scholarships to a couple of our
local High School seniors, help the Toys for
Tots campaign and make donations to the Eye
Bank and Meadows of Hope. Then on Dec.
12th we participated in our local Christmas
parade. We have also welcomed two new
members recently: Mike Crawley and Mark
Hammond. We meet for breakfast at 7:00am
every 1st and 3rd Tuesday upstairs in the 1st
United Bank in Holdenville. Please come
visit us if you're in town then.

It’s Convention Time!
I am so excited for our Mid-Winter District
Convention on February 23-24!! It will be
held in Ponca City! On Friday I have a Ser-
vice Project scheduled at 3:00pm at NERA
(Food Bank) at the corner of South 1st and
Central. We will be helping them restock
their shelves for the following Monday. They
will give us a tour of their facility first and
tell us of all that they do in our community.
As some of you may know, the building they
are in is the one Terry and I owned when we
had our store. When I retired, we sold the
building and they have totally redone the
inside so I am really anxious to see how it all
turned out!!! We should only be there a little
over an hour. Our International Director,
Ardie Klemish and her husband Ken will be
participating with us!
Our evening begins at 7:00pm at the Marland
Grand Home on East Grand. We will be able
to tour the home, upstairs and down. The
Ponca City Noon’s own Ms. Kay Anthony
Rice will be playing piano for us with period
music!!! And you will also be greeted by EW
Marland and Virginia!! They will be with us
for the evening. We will have a light meal so
you won’t go hungry!
The Convention will then be on Saturday and
you can expect some great information on our
district and we promise to feed you well and
entertain you!! We will be voting on our
new district Constitution and By Laws and
annual district elections. By the way…..we
are looking for a 2nd Vice District Governor
to be nominated and voted on too so if you
know of anyone who would be a great leader
for our district (maybe even yourself), please
let me or Vice District Governor Mary Koch
know.
This is our first convention for our new dis-
trict and we want it to be a great one! There
are many new clubs in our district and this is
a great way for us to get to know each other.
So, get your registration turned in ASAP! I
need them no later than February 15th to get
our food ordered.
I shared a video on our Facebook Page that
LCI has announced that we have served over
2 million people since July! Wow! How
amazing is that? The key to this is that clubs
are reporting their service projects! They
have asked us Governors to really encourage
clubs to do so. You would be amazed how
many do projects and it doesn’t get reported.
I think this number has gone up because of
YOU! Not only in having your clubs do ser-
vice projects but being responsible to report
it. Thank you!!
Speaking of Facebook…….have you gone
and “liked” our page? If you type in Okla-
homa District 3NW Lions Clubs our page
will pop up…..hit “like” and follow what is
going on in our district. Everyone is encour-
aged to do so!
I would like to congratulate Bryan Larison,
Executive Director for Lions Meadows of
Hope for receiving the Community Service
Award from the Perkins Chamber of Com-
merce! Way to go Bryan!
I want to take a moment and ask you to con-
sider something. For those of you who get
the Oklahoma Lion Newsletter in the mail,
would you be willing to receive it by email
only? When you receive the letter by email,
not only is it in color but there is more infor-
mation than the hard copy that gets mailed.
This will help the State Office save money
too on printing and postage. Please contact
Marvin Ainsworth at the State Office and let
him know that you would like to do this. You
can reach him at (405)947-6540 or email
him at [email protected]. Thank you for
your consideration in doing this and helping
our organization to save money!!!
I look forward to seeing you all at the con-
vention!!

From the Governor,
With the District Convention coming up March 2nd 3rd it means that it is time for elections again. Please consider serving outside of your club. It is rewarding to be part of the bigger picture. I understand most of us love supporting and doing for our local community but we also need to be thinking about our State. We have many great state level service projects that need board members to function properly. So, if you have a passion for one of the state level service projects please think about serving on one of the boards. We fill these board positions every year at the convention during elections.
Look forward to seeing all of you at the con-
vention
