Athletic, encouraging, and driven are three words to describe Olympian, Erin Bucci. Participating

in varsity sports for four years, Erin has made an honorable name for herself and her teams. She has been a part of both Cross Country and Track and Field since her freshman year and has played important roles on each.

Erin participated in Cross Country for a total of five years, one as a junior high runner and four as varsity. While being a part of the team, Erin strived to better herself each day by pushing herself at practice, supporting her teammates, and always putting her best toe on the line. In Erin’s junior and senior years, she medaled at the All-League meet, placing 17th both years. She also competed at the District level. Erin ran her personal best time of a 22:02 her junior year, and she has also been a driving force to the success of the team as a whole. It can certainly be noted that Erin’s strength and determination to achieve greatness has not gone unnoticed either. For the past two years, Erin has been the recipient of the Cross Country Coach’s award.

Head coach, Mr. Benyo comments, “Her organizational skills, leadership, handling of the underclassmen, setting the standards so very high, love of the program, and dedication set her apart from all others that have come before. An Erin Bucci comes along only once or twice in a twenty-four year coaching experience. I would be honored to have her as my daughter.”

To continue the running trend, Erin also participated in Track and Field for four years. In Erin’s four years of track, she contributed all of her

efforts and determination at every practice and meet to ensure her teammates’ and her own successes. As a freshman and sophomore, Erin was considered a full time distance runner, participating in the 1600 and 3200. In the following years, Erin was placed on the 4 by 800 relay team and became an 800 runner. At the close of her senior season, Erin was even asked to run as part of the 4 by 400 meter relay at the District meet. Never backing down, Erin accepted this challenge and embraced it, assisting the team in running their second best time of the season.

Off of the track, Erin exemplifies what it means to be a student athlete. She is currently ranked third in the senior class and holds various leadership positions. Specifically, Erin is the Managing Editor of The Olympiad, the Editor-in-Chief of The Flame, and the Vice President of the senior class. Erin is a member of the National Honor Society and Harry Potter Alliance as well. After graduating, Erin plans to attend Rochester Institute of Technology and major in a Physician’s Assistant program. While at R.I.T., she will further her running career and participate in Cross Country and possibly Track and Field.

Without a doubt, Erin’s role on both of her varsity sports teams is immeasurable. Her optimistic attitude and work ethic places her as one runner that will not be forgotten by her coaches or her teammates for many years. No matter where life takes Erin, it is impossible to imagine her not reaching the stars. Without a doubt, Erin Bucci will leave Jim Thorpe High School with her head held high as a true Olympian.

Erin Bucci Cross Country and Track and FieldBy: Kayla Susko [email protected]

Kayla Susko Cross Country and Track and FieldBy: Erin Bucci [email protected]

When Kayla Susko first moved to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania four years ago, she had no plans to

run Cross Country or Track and Field. However, another freshman convinced her to attend a Cross Country practice, and she has not stopped running since. At her first practice, Kayla almost managed to get through the three mile course without becoming sick. Needless to say, Kayla has come a long way from that first Cross Country practice. As a four year varsity letterwinner in the sports of Cross Country and Track and Field, Kayla will definitely leave a lasting mark on JTHS.

Since her first practice, Kayla Susko has improved immensely at Cross Country, running a personal record of 21:07 at the 2010 League meet for an impressive sixth place finish. During the 2010 cross season, Kayla also earned a position on the Schuylkill League All Star Cross Country Team and was honored with the title of Most Valuable Player. In Kayla’s senior year, her motivation and positive attitude were awarded with the Sportsmanship award as well. From these accomplishments, it is obvious that Kayla is a determined and dedicated athlete who is truly driven to be all that she can be.

In addition to being a key member of the cross country team, Kayla has proven to be a crucial part of Jim Thorpe Track and Field as well. Running the anchor leg of both the 4 by 800 and 4 by 400 relay teams, Kayla could always be counted on to pull ahead of the competition and finish strong. Whether it be at practice or competition, Kayla always gave it her all. In her freshman year, she broke the school record for the 800m, 1600m, 3200m, and was a part of the record breaking 4 by 800 team. Due to these achievements and overall hard work, Kayla was the recipient of the Coach’s Award also. During her sophomore year, Kayla accomplished another impressive feat when she broke the 400m record the first time she ever ran the race, earning

herself a position on the record holding 4 by 400 team. Also during her sophomore year, Kayla medaled at the district meet in the 800m run, placing fourth, and she continued on to the State meet for the 1600m run. This year, Kayla became the Schuylkill League champion of the 400m dash, running a 1:00.42, and was appropriately awarded the title of Most Valuable Player. To this day, Kayla holds, or is a part of, a total of five records.

Head coach of the track team, Mr. Miller comments, “It was truly a pleasure to be able to work with Kayla on a daily basis for the past four years. Her work ethic, drive for success, and determination is truly unbelievable. Kayla never let any boundary get in her way of success.”

As well as being a great athlete, Kayla has also proven herself to be a determined, eager student. In fact, Kayla was the recipient of the 2012 Schuylkill League Scholar Athlete award. Kayla is also the Valedictorian of the senior class and a member of National Honor Society. Along with these prestigious academic achievements, Kayla also holds many leadership positions within the school. She is the Treasurer of the senior class, Editor-in-Chief of The Olympiad, and Editor-in-Chief of The Flame. After high school, Kayla will attend Penn State University Main Campus as part of the Schreyer Honors College and double major in Energy Engineering and Energy Business and Finance. She plans to continue running through PSU’s Club Cross Country and Track teams, and perhaps try some new sports such as crew as well.

All in all, Kayla Susko’s presence on the Cross Country and Track teams will be greatly missed. Not only is she an excellent runner, but she is an excellent motivator and friend also. Her relentless drive to succeed, and her “can-do” attitude will surely lead her towards a bright and prosperous future.
