a FEW NOTES aBOuT TOdaY’S CErEMONY

WPI confers undergraduate and graduate degrees at separatespring Commencement ceremonies. Master’s and Phddegrees will be presented during this evening’s exercises;bachelor’s degree recipients will receive their diplomas onSaturday morning, May 12.

This graduate Commencement is a reflection of the growing stature of the Institute’s graduate programs, whichhave expanded substantially—in size, diversity, and international recognition—since WPI awarded its first master’s degrees in 1898 and its first Phd in 1960. Today, nearly 800 graduate degrees will be conferred.

Serving as honorary marshal is Kristin Boudreau, professor and department head of Humanities and arts, andwinner of the 2018 Trustees’ award for Outstanding researchand Creative Scholarship. The baton she carries is the walkingstick of WPI founder John Boynton. The cere monial marshalis Bruce E. Bursten, provost.

President Leshin wears the Presidential Medallion, withthe WPI seal cast in silver and the names and years of serviceof all 16 presidents engraved on small silver plates that formlinks in the chain. Provost Bursten carries the academic Mace,a 42-inch staff made from fluted cherrywood and topped witha circular silver pedestal on which sits a large silver medal withthe WPI seal on each side.

Student speaker Tan Zhang is receiving his Phd in electrical and computer engineering. He earned a BS at BeijingJiaotong university and an MS from WPI, each in electricalengineering.

He was named WPI Teaching assistant of the Year for2016–17, and Outstanding Teaching assistant for 2012–13,2015–16, 2016–17, and 2017–18; he earned IEEE CommunityService awards in 2012–13 and 2015–16 from WPI’sdepartment of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

His career experiences in the power and energy area spanpower system simulation, transformers, and power supplydesign. His research interests include microgrid, power elec-tronics, power system analysis, energy conversion, and energystorage systems.

PROCESSIONAL AND RECESSIONAL—Graduates begin lining up at 3:30 for the processional, which steps off at 4:30 (the ceremony itself starts at 5:00).Originating at Harrington auditorium, the processionalwinds through the campus, crosses Earle Bridge, follows thesidewalk past alden Memorial, moves onto the walkwaybehind Bartlett Center, turns at the Proud Goat statue, andproceeds up the center aisle under the tent.

at the conclusion of the ceremony, the marchers movedown the center aisle and proceed as a group toward theSports and recreation Center. Guests are asked not to blockthe progress of the processional or recessional. It is especiallyimportant to keep the center aisle clear so marchers may maketheir way to and from their seats.

As the processional begins, members of the faculty, attired in colorful robesand hoods, line both sides of Earle Bridge to pay tribute to the graduatesas they cross the bridge before receiving their diplomas.

BOYNTON HaLL aNd WaSHBurN SHOPSCompleted in 1868, WPI’s first building is named for John Boynton, a prosperous tinware manufacturer who founded the Institute in 1865 with a gift of $100,000.Boynton Hall was one of the first buildings designed by noted architect Stephen Earle and was constructed of granite obtained from local quarries. The building originally housed classrooms and labs, where students learned the theory of science and engineering; they applied that theory next door inthe Washburn Shops. The towers of these two buildings now symbolize WPI’s unique philosophy of education, the merger of theory and practice.

PHOTOS AND VIDEOS—The pictures taken today will be treasured mementos. The following information should help our guests get the shots they want.

Photos during the ceremony: The area in front and to the side of the stage is reserved for official (badged) WPI photographers. Guests are not permitted in this area and may not stand in the aisles or around the stage area during anypart of the ceremony (this will be strictly enforced). Please donot stand in the aisles to take photographs as you will block theview of seated guests.

Note: The professional firm Commencement Photostakes a photo from an optimal location near the stage of each graduate receiving a diploma. The company will mailproofs with an order form to graduates or their families. For more information, call the studio at 978-851-5924.

WPI records the entire ceremony from several vantage points. a live stream is available on the WPI commencement website and the WPI Mobile app (see nextsection) during the ceremony. a complete, high-quality videoof the ceremony will be available for downloading within twoweeks at wpi.edu/+Commencement.

Photos after the ceremony: If you’d like to capture yourhappy graduate following the ceremony, we recommend thefollowing locations:• The Stage Area: after the procession has left the Quad -

rangle, guests are invited to take photos on or near the stage(with WPI banner and plantings in background).

• Earle Bridge: Spanning West Street, the footbridge is decorated with flowering plants.

• Boynton Hall: WPI’s first building, with its granite ex teriorand clock tower, is located just across the footbridge.

• Higgins House: This WPI mansion, located directly behindthe rubin Campus Center, is surrounded by plantings andformal gardens that are in full bloom at this time of year.

GLENN YEE ’74dOCTOr OF ENGINEErING

at the dawn of the WPI Plan, then-President Harry P. Storkepredicted that the success or failure of this bold experimentwould “shape Tech’s destiny” for many years to come. No oneknew what that destiny would look like until the first bravestudents opted to enroll in WPI’s revolutionary new toapproach undergraduate science and engineering education.among that small band of pioneers was Glenn Yee, Class of1974. With excitement and a deep sense of purpose, Yee andhis peers brought the Plan to life. In so doing, they helped shape WPI’s destiny as thestandard-bearer for project-based learningand a community dedicated to solving greatproblems around the globe.

The Plan perfectly fit Yee’s eagerness toroll up his sleeves and get to work. For hisInteractive Qualifying Project, he collaboratedwith american Optical to design a bettermethod for fitting lenses into eyeglass frames. For his Major Qualifying Project, he and histeam worked with the WPI machine shop totest new applications for fiberglass-reinforcedmaterials. He has fondly recalled the creativity andcamaraderie that the Plan inspired among its earliest studentsas they “learned to work with other people and to push eachother to achieve the desired results.”

a pioneer well before attending WPI, Yee emigrated withhis family from China to Cleveland, Ohio. after graduatingfrom West High School, he traveled another 600 miles east toattend a small engineering school in New England that hadcaptured his imagination. There, he pursued a bachelor’sdegree in mechanical engineering and enthusiastically took partin campus life. upon graduation, he joined General Electric’sTechnical Marketing Program and soon became interested inthe business and commercial side of engineering. This led himto attend Columbia university, where he earned an MBa.

In 1977 Yee joined Continental Can Co. in Stamford,Connecticut, as a corporate finance analyst in internationalfinance. When the company opened an asia Pacific office, he

embraced the opportunity to return to Hong Kong with hisyoung family. Over the next 10 years, he rose through theranks, ultimately serving as managing director. When heidentified an opportunity to develop the aluminum beveragecan market in China, he formed his own start-up enterprise,Pacific Can Company.

Today, Pacific Can is a leading aluminum beverage canmanufacturer in China, boasting 1,000employees and six locations. Through itshistory, the company has owned and operated10 plants in China. among its customers aresome of the largest brewers in the world, including Tsingtao Brewery, and anheuserBusch, as well as Coca-Cola and PepsiCo.under Yee’s leadership as CEO, the firm hasreceived many industry awards, including“Can of the Year” awards in 2009 and 2010.among other honors, Yee, a 35-year memberof the rotary Club of Hong Kong, the oldestrotary Club in the region, was recognizedwith an Economic development Contributor

award by the city of Shenyang in 2012.Crediting the entrepreneurial skills he developed through

the Plan, Yee now helps new generations of WPI students gaincritical real-world experience by sponsoring projects in WPI’sBeijing Project Center. Indeed, he has remained activelyinvolved with WPI since graduating. a trusted advisor toseveral WPI presidents, he joined the Board of Trustees in2000 and served on the President’s International advisoryBoard from 1998 to 2006. In 2008 WPI honored Yee with therobert H. Goddard alumni award for OutstandingProfessional achievement. Today he continues to serve WPIas a Trustee Emeritus.

For his distinguished career achievements, hisunwavering devotion to his alma mater, and his vital role inhelping “shape Tech’s destiny,” WPI is delighted to confer onGlenn Yee the degree of doctor of Engineering, Honoris Causa.

MarCIa MCNuTTdOCTOr OF SCIENCE

Marcia McNutt stands at the pinnacle of science andtechnology in the united States today. as the director of theNational academy of Sciences, she leads our nation’s premierscience advisory organization, helping advance knowledgeand inform sound policies that improve the lives of millions ofamericans. a risk-taker and glass ceiling breaker, She is thefirst woman to lead the academy since it was established in1863 under a congressional charter signed by Presidentabraham Lincoln.

Widely admired for her “intellectualfierceness” and “solutions-oriented leader-ship,” McNutt is no stranger to serving as apioneer for women in science. as a graduatestudent, she decided to “get in on the groundfloor of a scientific revolution in platetectonics” by pursuing geophysics, as the firstwoman to direct the u.S. Geological Survey, she faced some of the most dauntingchallenges of her professional life, leading theagency’s response to several major disasters, including earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, andJapan, and the deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf ofMexico. Later, and as editor-in-chief of Science magazine, shewas the first woman to lead the venerable peer-reviewedjournal since it was founded in 1880.

McNutt began her groundbreaking career at theMassachusetts Institute of Technology, where she served asthe E. a. Griswold Professor of Geophysics. at MIT herresearch focused on the dynamics of the upper mantle andlithosphere on geologic time scales, and she led or participatedin more than a dozen deep-sea expeditions all over the globe. In addition to running a successful laboratory and graduatingmany young scientists, she also directed the Joint Program inOceanography/applied Ocean Science & Engineering offeredby MIT and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Following 15 years in academia, she took on the newchallenge of administrative leadership. She accepted the

position of president and chief executive officer of theMonterey Bay aquarium research Institute, where she wasknown for supporting high-risk, high-reward projects. Shelater served as president of the american Geophysical unionand chair of the Board of Governors for Joint OceanographicInstitutions.

Viewed by many as an “aspirational icon for young femalescientists,” McNutt has helped pave the wayfor future women of science throughout hercareer. In addition to serving as a personalchampion, she has been a vocal challenger ofthe obstacles that many women scientists stillface. as director of the National academy, shehas named “promoting women in science”one of her highest priorities.

She received a Ba in physics fromColorado College and a Phd in Earth sciencesat the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She is a fellow of the Geological Society ofamerica, the american association for theadvancement of Science, and the

International association of Geodesy. She has received severalprestigious awards, including the 1988 James B. MacelwaneMedal for research accomplishments by a young scientist andthe 2007 Maurice Ewing Medal for her contributions to deep-sea exploration. McNutt is a member of the americanPhilosophical Society and the american academy of arts andSciences, and a Foreign Member of the royal Society, uK, andthe russian academy of Sciences. She holds honorary doctoraldegrees from several distinguished institutions, a membershipWPI is honored to join today.

For advancing the world’s understanding of oceanscience, providing critical leadership to american science, andbeing a champion of opportunity for new generations ofwomen scientists, WPI is proud to confer on Marcia McNuttthe degree of doctor of Science, Honoris Causa.
