TRIBUTE TO C9URB.G-E - By Victor Gadoury, The numismatic world j oins the free world in a tribute to the staunch heroiSm that has be- come the bi-word of the Czechoslovakian people, This then, in my own way i s a tribute to these people, Some fifty years before the Russian tanks rumbled through the streets of Prague, the Re- public came into being; but the Numismatic history of Czechoslovakia actually began on February 16, 1922, This was the date of the f i r s t coinage of Czechoslovakia that was struck to ultimately replace the Austro-Hungarian coinage and currency, The Austro-Hungarian bank notes remained i n circulation until Novem- ber 20, 1924, but were counterstamped t o dist- inguish them from their former origin, The 20 and 0 Ilaleru coins were the first denominations to d e placed into circulation by the Czechoslovakian Government, These coins were made of a copper-nickel alloy, and not until seven years later did a silver coin appe are The silver cormemor atives, for which Czechoslovalcia i s world f a~lous, closely follow the history of that Central European Republic, The first of which was released into circula- tion i n 1928 and served to mark the tenth ann- iverswy of the Czechoslo~i.akian independence, The 10 Korona (700 fine silver) bears the bust of To G, Masaryk, the Repc~lic'sfirst president, It was Tomas Garrique Masayk along with Edward Benes, who gradually united the Bzechs and the Slovaks i n revolt, that broughf independence. On June 30, 1918, T.G, Masarykt s signature on an agreement between the Czechs and the Slovaks officially founded the new I state, Ironically, the signing took place in the United States (Pittsburg:~, Pa. ) . The coinage of Czechoslovakia was discont inued on March 15, 1939, when the German t roops marched i n t o Prague, The German occup-- a t i o n a l coinage was divided i n t o two groups. They were: Slovakia, an independent Republic s e t up by H i t l e r , and t h e P ro tec to ra te of Bohemia-Mor avia , which inc ludes t h e remaining a r e a of Czechoslovakia n o t ceded t o Hungary i n t h e Vienna Awad of November 2, 1938,

The coinage of Slovakia consis ted of 1 2 d i f f e r e n t types of coins , including f i v e cornrnelnorative i s sues . The f i r s t coimenior a t i v e was a f i v e Korona ( n i c k e l 2 7 m ) of Father Andrej Iilinka, l eader of tlie peoples pa r ty a i d a l ead ing const i tuei i t of a, separa te Slovakia, Later t h a t same y e w , another commemorative was i ssued on t h e occas- i o n of t h e f i r s t e l e c t i o n of the Pres ident of Slovakia, This was a 20 Korona ) 500 f i n e s i l v e r ) portraying Fathe? Joseph Tiso, a followe- of H i t l e r . Two years l a t e r ( l g k l ) , another 20 ICorona was i ssued t o comernorate St . C y r i l 1 and Methodius, I n 1944, two more comemora.- t i v e s were i ssued , one honouring Pribina, Prince of Slovakia and t h e o the r t o commemorate the 5 th anniversary of t h e Slovak Republic, f ~ c n 1939 t o 19450

The Bohemia-Mor a v i a Protec tor a t e i ssued only four co ins , M.2- were made of Zinc. They were 10, 20 and 50 Haleru 's a s wel l as a one Korona. To t h i s day no p o s i t i v e mintage f i g u r e s zlre known as these coins were all s t ruck by a p r i v a t e firm; it i s hel ieved t h a t t h i s f i rm kept no record of t h e i r occupational coins ,

Although Czechoslovakia was l i b e r a t e d on May 9, 194.5, i t s cub- rency was n o t renewed u n t i l November 1, 1945, and put i n t o c5rcul.a- t i o n on Apri l 25, 1946,

Dm- ing the period of 1960 t o 1967, the Czechoslovakian Goverm.ent re- l eased severa l more commemoratives, t h i s time mostly dwelling on h i s t - o r i c a l poin ts and p e r s o n a l i t i e s . The jub i l ee year of 1918-1968 w a s t o be no exception r e g a r d l e s s of p o l i t i c a l s t rugg les , Czechoslovakia managed t o i s s u e t h r e e commemoratives. These coins unfor tunate ly , only have a mintage of 60,000 each; I say unfor tuna te ly becausw of t h e i r beauty and t h a t so few c o l l e c t o r s w i l l have t h e opportuni ty of owning them. With t h e d i v i s i o n of Czechoslovakia oil January 1, 1969, t h e f u t u r e w i l l no doubt as i n t h e pas t , see many changes i n t h e Czecl~oslovakian coinage. This type of exh ib i t exposes the hobby t o the non co l lec t ing public, in greater numbers than any other type of show could possibly do.
