1 Sept 3-10, 2012 4 th edition T he Faculty of Business manage- ment (FBM) of the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) has launched four new programs as part of celebrations of the 20 th Anniversary of the OUT. Gracing the ceremony, the Deputy Minister for Industry, Trade and Marketing, Hon. Gregory Teu (MP) has commended efforts made by the Faculty and asked them to develop and run programs that will impart modern business knowledge and skills. “I understand that the Faculty of Business Management of OUT also has the critical role to play in achieving the objective spelt out in the various national policies as well as Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) that will enable comprehend both theoretical and practical issues underpinning the operation of business ” the minister added. Before launching the programs, Dr. Proches Ngatuni, the Dean, Faculty of Business Management, highlighted the contents of the programs and that the launched programs will help the society not only in acquiring new business managerial skills but also use them as a ladder to further studies. New programs launched during the celebrations were Bachelor of Business Administration Special Face-to-Face (BBA-SF2F), Bachelor of Human Resource Management (BHRM), Postgraduate Diploma in Business Studies (PGDBS) and Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM). The day was also colored by the open discussion involving business stake holders, FBM staff and students chaired by Dr. Tumaini Katunzi, the Associate Dean, FBM. Open and Distance Education is the only solution in higher education provision-MulugoOpen and distance education has become

more visible in higher education sector within Tanzania and beyond where the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) happened to be the very big institution providing higher education through Open and Distance mode.

The statement was made by the Deputy Minister of Education Hon. Philipo A. Mulugo (MP) when addressing the 2nd Conference of the Distance Education Association of Tanzania (DEATA) at Mwinyi Hall, OUT Kinondoni Regional Centre.

Honorable Mulugo said ‘’open and Distance is acknowledged as a mechanism or mode of delivering that has the potential to widen access to education and learning, even in areas and for people who cannot be easily reached through the conventional means’’

‘’ since the education is so important, ODL will assist Tanzania to move closer to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’S) necessary for sustainable development. It is therefore important to look back and take an inventory of what steps have been made by the OUT in 20

years of its existence” Minister Mulugo added.

The two day conference took place on 22nd and 23rd August 2012 at Mwinyi Hall, OUT Kinondoni Regional Centre as part of OUT 20 years Anniversary where number of papers was presented by various speakers from the Open

University of Tanzania and other Institutions.

The Open University of Tanzania (OUT) through her Directorate of Examination

Syndicate (DES) has released the provisional results of all Examinations sat for in June/July 2012.

The statement was issued by the Director of Examination Syndicate, Dr. Yohana Lawi when talking to Newsflash writer on Saturday evening. Dr. Lawi made it clear that his Directorate worked tirelessly to make sure that all results are released on time and allow students with supplementary to clear the same through newly introduced Examination on Demand (ODEX) system to take off this September.

Dr. Lawi congratulated all students who performed well in their examinations and urged those who failed to opt for ODEX system if their subjects’ falls under the pilot list of subjects selected for that

system. He further reminded all students that ODEX registration is still going on where ODEX sessions are expected to take place on 14th of September 2012 all over the country.

Commenting on the released results one Lilian Shija (student) commended for the great job the Directorate is doing and make sure that results are getting out as expected by the majority of students.

Since the establishment of the DES, security of examinations, early release of examination results, the quality of examinations and the control of the same have been improved to a great extent an act which has been appreciated by the majority of educational stake holders, OUT students in particular.

OUT Arusha DRC completed phase one of the study shed construction

The OUT Arusha Regional Centre has managed to construct suitable study shed for all OUT

students worth about 24.65 Million Tanzania Shillings accommodating more than two hundred students in one sitting.

The statement was made by the Arusha Regional Director, Mama Wilhelmina Lyimo-Saria when talking to News Flash writer last Friday. She said the shed will save a lot of the University funds which was used for examination halls hiring raised from one hundred fifty thousand Tanzania shillings totwo hundred thousand shillings per day. She further commented that the June/July Examination took place in the new shed saving more than 1.5 Million Tanzania

shillings which was allocated for Examination Halls hiring.

Talking on the capacity of the shed, “currently this Study shed Phase can accommodate 200 students and our plan is to construct Phase II of 300 sitting capacity by June 2013. Together with being used for all academic activities including students’ studying, the Shed will also be used for other community activities”.

She also thanked all students who contributed their funds that enabled the faster construction of the shed.

The Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) of the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) has

launched ten new programs as part of celebrating 20th Anniversary of the OUT.

The launching was graced by the Deputy Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr. Milton Makongoro Mahanga representing the Minister for Labour and Employment Hon. Gaudencia kabaka as a guest of honor on 29th August 2012.

Addressing ICE staff and other participants Dr. Mahanga said, “Lifelong learning has to be recommendedtofillthegapinprovidingtherelevantskills”. “If the adult education is well managed, it can be a strong instrument for improving economy and labour productivity”.

The new programs have been categorized into Short courses and Executive demand driven courses. The short courses are Small Business Entrepreneurship, Local Government Administration Course, Leadership Ethics and Integrity, Democracy and Good Governance, Project Formulation and Management Skills, Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Effective Leadership and Management Skills, Human Resource Management for Non HR Managers, Leadership Problem Solving and Decision Making and Customer Care Course. While for the Executive demand driven courses are SPSS and Logic Model Analysis for Business and Social Research and Gas and Oil Laws.

Number of papers was presented during the day and attracted a lot of discussions among participants.
