Windhaven Insurance Orange Bowl Paddle Championship presented by Blue World Paddle, Surf & Skate raises $25,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters

On May 9, nearly 200 paddle boarders from as far as Hawaii hit the waters of Biscayne Bay for the fifth annual Windhaven Insurance Orange Bowl Paddle Championship presented by Blue World Paddle, Surf & Skate. The event, which took place at the Miami Rowing Club located in Virginia Key, raised $25,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters Miami.

The Orange Bowl Paddle Championship is one of the largest Stand Up Paddle (SUP) events on the East Coast and it featured several races throughout the day. The Elite Course was a challenging 8.6 mile race rounding the historic Virginia Key. Elite Course paddle boarders competed for $4,000 in cash and prizes. The Recreational Course was a 2.5 mile family – friendly loop in protected waters on the southwest side of the key.

This year the Orange Bowl introduced a new course, a Corporate Challenge. In this race, 25 companies put together four-man teams and competed in a paddle board obstacle course. Each team member had to help blow up an inflatable paddle board with a manual pump then paddle to a buoy in the bay and back then run through an

inflatable football field gauntlet.

“One thing we always loved about this event is that it showcased our city,” said OBC member, Jimmy Whited, who is one of the event co-founders as well as the President & CEO of Windhaven Insurance Company. “There is no other venue in the world that is like this in a downtown major urban area and this is the only major water event in this setting in America.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters children got to experience paddle boarding for themselves as Milla Navarro, the #1 nationally-ranked, 16 year-old competitive SUP pro, lead a youth paddle clinic.

“We wanted to show that everybody can paddle board,” said OBC member Shawn Crews. “Even beginners could come out here and participate in some of the races. It has really opened up this event to the entire community.”

Since starting in 2010, the event has raised more than $100,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters Miami.

Orange Bowl’s Kicks for Kids program collects 5,000 pairs of shoes for children in 2014

On Thursday, March 26, Orange Bowl Committee members and staff along with representatives from Baptist Health South Florida and TD Bank handed out shoes to 50 South Florida youths as part of the Orange Bowl “Kicks for Kids” program at the Carver Ranches Boys & Girls Club in Hollywood, Florida.

Since 2011, “Kicks for Kids” has provided local children and teens the opportunity to participate in and reap the rewards of sports and exercise by receiving a pair of quality athletic shoes. Together, the Orange Bowl and the South Florida community have been able to collect close to 15,000 pairs of new or moderately used athletic shoes and sneakers including nearly 5,000 this past year.

“Baptist Health South Florida and the Orange Bowl both strive to enrich and care for the welfare of Miami-Dade and Broward residents,” said Patricia Rosello, Chief Executive Officer of Baptist Outpatient Services. “We are happy to support the

Kicks for Kids initiative to encourage South Florida’s underserved youth to stay healthy and fit through the donation of athletic shoes.”

This year’s program launched in October and ran through January. The response from the South Florida community made this year a success. Shoe donations were dropped off at Baptist Health South Florida and TD Bank locations. Schools from Miami-Dade and Broward County participated in a challenge with the top collecting schools receiving grants. Residents and local organizations also provided donations.

“TD Bank believes strongly in investing in the areas where we live, work and play and we are proud to be a sponsor of the Kicks for Kids effort that will provide assistance to

many children in our local community,” said Ernie Diaz, Regional President, State of Florida, TD Bank, and an Orange Bowl Committee member.

For the third consecutive year, In Jacob’s Shoes cleaned and restored gently worn shoe donations. The organization received a portion of the donations, a financial contribution as well as a plaque of appreciation from the Orange Bowl for all its efforts.

In addition to the Boys & Girls Club of Broward and Miami-Dade Counties and In Jacob’s Shoe’s, pairs were also donated to Family Central Inc., a child care resource that serves more than 100,000 children, families and child service providers in South Florida. See page 16

Orange Bowl Committee back as presenting sponsor for the Sunshine State lacrosse Tournament in Parkland

The sixth annual Sunshine State Games Lacrosse Tournament presented by the Orange Bowl was held on May 15 - May 17 at Pine Trails Park in Parkland, FL. This was the second consecutive year the Orange Bowl Committee sponsored the event, which is one of the largest youth lacrosse events in the region.

About 125 teams with players up to 18 years old played in more than 250 games on 10 fields over three days.

The Sunshine State Games Lacrosse Tournament presented by the Orange Bowl builds on the Orange Bowl Committee’s tradition of supporting youth and collegiate sports in South Florida.

In 1980, the State of Florida created the Sunshine State Games to provide Florida’s citizens an Olympic-style sports festival they can call their own. The Sunshine State Games, now in its fourth decade of competition, is the nation’s oldest State Games and is Florida’s largest and longest standing multi-sport festival. The Sunshine State Games are conducted under the auspices of the Florida Sports Foundation, a direct-support organization of the State of Florida. More than 30 different sports are offered from April through July each year.

Additional Sunshine State Games Lacrosse Tournament presented by the Orange Bowl sponsors include AutoNation, Florida Prepaid College Board, Gladiator Lacrosse, Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute at Baptist Health South Florida and TD Bank.

The Orange Bowl Committe helps raise $225,000 for Make-a-Wish Southern Florida

The Orange Bowl Committee supports numerous South Florida organizations and strives to provide unique opportunities for those in need. The Orange Bowl Committee proudly served as sponsor for Make-A-Wish Southern Florida’s 6th annual Walk For Wishes® 5k Walk/Run on Saturday February 7 at Markham Park in Sunrise, FL.

More than 1,300 people participated and the event raised more than $225,000 to help grant the wishes of 45 children with life-threatening medical conditions, which is $50,000 more than what was raised last year.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be involved with Make-A-Wish Southern Florida,” said Eric Poms, CEO of the Orange Bowl. “It’s a great cause and changes lives. That’s what we’re all about, giving back to the community. We have hosted Wish Kids at the past three Orange Bowls and the 2013 National Championship and it’s rewarding to be able to bring a little joy into their lives at such a challenging time.”

Congratulations to Orange Bowl Committee staffers Mike Liotta, Jessica McIntyre and Emily Theys. They all placed in the top 3 for their age groups in the 5k. Emily was the “Top Overall Female” finisher.

Orange Bowl-FWaa Courage award winners look to make an impact in the nFl

Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award recipients Arthur Ray Jr. and Laken Tomlinson have a few things in common. They are both from the Chicago area. They are both 6’3 and weigh 300 pounds. Both were high school football standouts who went on to play offensive line at Power Five conference programs and now they are both going to get their shot to play in the NFL.

Tomlinson made more than 50 consecutive starts and helped the Blue Devils finish the regular season 9-3 in 2014

The Detroit Lions selected Tomlinson as the 28th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, making him the first Courage Award winner to ever be selected in the first round.

The former Duke football captain and All- American grew up in Jamaica and came to this country when he was 10. It was quickly realized that Tomlinson was intelligently gifted. He wound up in a mentoring program and, despite early concerns of his mother,

lived with the family of Bob Sperling, a Chicago-based attorney. He flourished off the field as well, earning two degrees from Duke.

Arthur Ray’s path to the NFL is more treacherous and is still uncertain. He wasn’t drafted but the Miami Dolphins invited him to its rookie training camp. He will fight for a spot on the team roster. But Ray is used to defying the odds. After accepting a scholarship to Michigan State but before enrolling in 2007, he was diagnosed with cancer in his left leg. Through nine surgeries – including four bone grafts – countless rounds of chemotherapy and several outbreaks of infection, he was unable to practice or play. For almost two years, he was unable to walk without crutches. He was cleared to play in 2011 and appeared in a few games that season. After graduating he was granted two years of eligibility to play at Division II Fort Lewis in Durango, Colorado.

Two inspiring stories from two talented young men, the Orange Bowl Committee wishes them both the best of luck with their professional careers on and off the field. Ray Jr. at the 2012 Orange Bowl

“It’s great to see how much the Kicks for Kids program has grown in a short period of time and how many have benefitted from it,” said Orange Bowl Member Larry Gautier. “One of the Orange Bowl’s pillars is supporting youth, and Kicks for Kids allows the Orange Bowl to do that while advocating a healthy lifestyle. A quality pair of athletic shoes will hopefully encourage all these children to participate in sports or go outside and play. The Orange Bowl is grateful to the sponsors, volunteers and South Florida residents for helping us make an impact in the lives of these families.”
