LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading: A reading from the Book of Kings (3:5, 7-12)

The Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream at night. God said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.” Solomon answered:

“O Lord, my God, you have made me, your servant, king to succeed my father David; but I am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act.

I serve you in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a people so vast that it cannot be numbered or counted.

Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong. For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?”

The Lord was pleased that Solomon made this request. So God said to him:

“Because you have asked for this— not for a long life for yourself, nor for riches, nor for the life of your enemies, but for understanding so that you may know what is right— I do as you requested.

I give you a heart so wise and understanding that there has never been anyone like you up to now,

and after you there will come no one to equal you.” Cantor: The word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God. Responsorial Psalm

All:

I have said, O Lord, that my part is to keep your words.

The law of your mouth is to me more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces. R/

Let your kindness comfort me

according to your promise to your servants. Let your compassion come to me that I may live,

for your law is my delight. R/

Page 5: THE ORDER OF MASS · God said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.” Solomon answered: “O Lord, my God, you have made me, your servant, king to succeed my father

For I love your commands more than gold, however fine.

For in all your precepts I go forward; every false way I hate. R/

Wonderful are your decrees; therefore I observe them.

The revelation of your words sheds light, giving understanding to the simple. R/

Second Reading: A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans (8:28-30)

Brothers and sisters: We know that all things work for good for those who love God,

who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predestined

to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified;

and those he justified he also glorified. Cantor: The word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation

All: Priest/Deacon: The Lord be with you. All: And with your spirit.

Priest/Deacon: A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (13:44-52)

All: +Glory to you, O Lord. + (All trace the Sign of the Cross with right thumb on the forehead, lips, and heart)

Jesus said to his disciples:

“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls.

Page 6: THE ORDER OF MASS · God said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.” Solomon answered: “O Lord, my God, you have made me, your servant, king to succeed my father

When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind.

When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets.

What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous

and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.

“Do you understand all these things?” They answered, “Yes.” And he replied,

“Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.”

Priest/Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father,

through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

At the words that follow up to and including and became man, all bow.

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Universal Prayer (Prayer of the Faithful) Response: Lord hear our prayer.

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done. On earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Priest: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. If one is unable to receive our Lord in Communion, it is most appropriate to pray an Act of Spiritual Communion: My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Amen. Prayer after Communion
