Introduction

1. Married Christians, in virtue of the sacrament of HolyMatrimony, signify andshareinthemysteryofthatunityandfruitfullovewhichexistsbetweenChristandhisChurch;1theyhelpeachothertoattaintoholinessintheirmarriedlifeandintherearingandeducationoftheirchildren;andtheyhavetheirownspecialgiftamongthepeopleofGod.2"The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish betweenthemselves apartnershipof thewholeof life, is by itsnatureordered toward thegoodof thespousesand theprocreationandeducationofoffspring; thiscovenantbetween baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of asacrament."32. In celebrating the sacrament of Holy Matrimony, Christians proclaim thecommunionof love betweenChrist and theChurch and askGod’s blessing on thenewcouplethattheirnuptialunionmightbethesacramentalsignofthissamelove.TheOrderfortheCelebrationofHolyMatrimonyforusebytheOrdinariateserectedunder the auspices of the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus givesexpressiontotheAnglicanliturgicalpatrimonywhichhasnourishedmanyintheirfaith in the nuptial covenant between God and his people and has promoted thegoodendsofmarriedlife.Itsuseisthereforerestrictedtothoseclergyandfaithfulwho belong to one of the Personal Ordinariates established under the ApostolicConstitutionAnglicanorumcoetibus.43.IncasesofpastoralnecessityorintheabsenceofapriestordeaconincardinatedinanOrdinariate,anypriestordeaconincardinatedinaDioceseorinanInstituteofConsecratedLifeorSocietyofApostolicLifemaypresideovertheriteofMarriageaccording toTheOrder for theCelebrationofHolyMatrimony formembers of theOrdinariatewhorequestit.5

4. “In the Latin Rite the celebration of marriage between two Catholic faithfulnormally takes place during Holy Mass, because of the connection of all thesacramentswiththePaschalmysteryofChrist.IntheEucharistthememorialoftheNewCovenantisrealized,theNewCovenantinwhichChristhasunitedhimselfforevertotheChurch,hisbelovedbrideforwhomhegavehimselfup. Itisthereforefitting that thespousesshouldseal theirconsent togive themselves toeachotherthroughtheofferingoftheirownlivesbyunitingittotheofferingofChristforhisChurchmadepresentintheEucharisticsacrifice,andbyreceivingtheEucharistsothat,communicatinginthesameBodyandthesameBloodofChrist,theymayformbut‘onebody’inChrist.”65. InmarriagesbetweenaCatholicandabaptizedpersonwhoisnotCatholic,theriteofMarriageisnormallycelebratedoutsideMass.Shouldpastoralcircumstancessuggest,theriteofMarriagewithinMassmaybeusedexceptthat,accordingtotheuniversal law of the Church, Holy Communion is not given to the non‐Catholicspouse. InamarriagebetweenaCatholicandapersonwho isnotbaptized,HolyMatrimonyiscelebratedoutsideMass.6.When two ormoremarriages are solemnized during the same celebration, theexchangeofconsentshallbedoneseparately. 7. The Order for the Celebration of HolyMatrimony has been arranged in threesections:TheCelebrationofHolyMatrimonywithinaNuptialMass;theCelebrationofHolyMatrimonyoutsideMass;andtheCelebrationofHolyMatrimonybetweenaCatholicandanon‐baptizedperson.TheCelebrationofHolyMatrimony8. “According to the Latin tradition, the spouses as ministers of Christ’s gracemutually conferuponeachother the sacramentofMatrimonybyexpressing theirconsent before the Church.”7 The priest or deacon who presides over the rite ofMarriagewitnesses the couple’s exchangeof consent and receives that consent inthenameoftheChurch.9. The celebration of Holy Matrimony is permitted, but not encouraged duringAdventorLent,onEmberdaysoronotherdaysofpenance.Thecoupleshouldbeadvised to take into consideration the particular nature of these liturgical times,whichrequiresmoderatingtheexternalelements,suchasflowersanddecorationsin the church. The celebration of a Holy Matrimony is not permitted during thePaschalTriduum.

10. When Holy Matrimony is celebrated during Mass, the choice of the MassformularyisregulatedaccordingtotheRomanRitual,RiteofMarriage,no.34.11. Wherever other praiseworthy customs and ceremonies are used in thecelebrationof thesacramentofHolyMatrimony, it is fitting that theybe retained.Thecustomat thegivingof theringsmayberetained,whereby thering isplacedfirstoverthethumb,andthenoverthesecond,thirdandfourthfinger,asthewords“in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” are spoken.Similarly,when the priest joins the right hands of the husband andwife, hemaywraptheendofhisstolearoundthejoinedhandsasheproclaims,“ThosewhomGodhathjoined,etc.”12.Theuseof“HolyGhost” insteadof“HolySpirit” ispermittedaccordingto localcustom.13. ForanycircumstancesthatarenotcoveredinthisOrder,referenceshouldbemadetotheRomanRitual,RiteofMarriage.

Dearlybeloved,we are gatheredhere in the sight ofGod and in thepresenceof thiscongregation, towitness the joining togetherof thisman and this woman in Holy Matrimony; which is an honourableestate,institutedofGodhimself,signifyinguntousthemysticalunionthat is betwixt Christ and his Church; which holy estate Christadorned and beautified with his presence, and first miracle that hewrought, in Cana of Galilee, and is commended in Holy Writ to behonourable among all men; and therefore is not by any to beenterprised,nortakeninhand,unadvisedly, lightly,orwantonly;butreverently,discreetly,soberly,andinthefearofGod,dulyconsideringthecausesforwhichMatrimonywasordained.

First,itwasordainedfortheincreaseofmankindaccordingtothewillofGod,andthatchildrenmightbebroughtupinthefearandnurtureoftheLord,andtothepraiseofhisholyName.

Secondly, it was ordained in order that the natural instincts andaffections,implantedbyGod,shouldbehallowedanddirectedaright;that thosewhoarecalledofGodto thisholyestate,shouldcontinuethereininpurenessofliving.

Into which holy estate these two persons present come now to bejoined.

Therefore if any one can show any just cause, why they may notlawfully be joined together, let himnow speak, or elsehereafter foreverholdhispeace.

AtwhichdayofMarriage, ifanyonedoesallegeanddeclareanyimpediment,whytheymaynotbecoupledtogetherinMatrimony,byGod's law,orbythe lawsofthenation,thenthesolemnizationmustbedeferred,untilsuchtimeasthetruthbeascertained.
