POPS Concert Scores Again! So many members of our church family gave strong, supporting hands to help make our POPS concert the success that it was, that it is somewhat difficult to send out individual “thank yous”. Seventh Year of Interfaith Discovery Series Begins October 9 The Dawn Unity Group's well regarded Interfaith Discovery Series will begin its seventh season at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, October 9 at the St. John Fisher Catholic Church, 5448 Crest Road, Rancho Palos Verdes. “Mysticism” will be discussed by four distinguished local religious leaders, Sufi John Ishvaradas Adballah of World Without Borders, Rabbi Isaac Jeret of Congregation Ner Tamid, Rev. Dr. Karl Johnson of The Neighborhood Church, and Msgr. David Sork of St. John Fisher Catholic Church. Each will explain how personal identification and union with the divine or ultimate spiritual truth is expressed by the believers within their respective faiths. This comparison among Islam, Judaism, Protestantism, and Catholicism will give us a wonderful learning experience. As always, this evening symposium is free to the community. Refreshments and the opportunity for a social hour will follow after the presentation concludes at 9 p.m. More information can be obtained by calling (310) 833-7008.

JOHN AUGUST SWANSON AT RHUMC OCTOBER 8 Perhaps you have enjoyed the trio of serigraphs in the Narthex – “The Shepherds”, “Nativity”, and “Epiphany”. Or maybe you’ve seen “The Prodigal Son” or “Story of Joseph” in Jonathan’s office. These are a few of the glorious works of artist John August Swanson. His work hangs not only at RHUMC but also in many other churches – also schools, homes and museums including the Smithsonian, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Vatican. This year Sister Circle has done a series of studies on John’s “The Story of Ruth”. We invited him to come to meet with us, and he graciously accepted. We’d now like to invite all of you to join us on Monday, October 8, at 7:30 pm in the Sanctuary. John will present a slide show and share the story of his life and art. He has promised to bring with him his latest serigraph, “Procession”, which was printed using over 90 colors! His presentation will be followed with dessert, and you will have a chance to chat personally with this very gifted, spiritual and humble man. If you have questions, please call Jackie Showalter at 310-544-8510. You will also have an opportunity to give to Toberman’s gang mediation program through a free-will offering. The money will be donated in honor of Mr. Swanson, who requests that we support peacemaking rather than provide him with an honorarium.

Thank you!

from the pastor

Theoretically Christian worship should always be about celebration. The reason the early Christians ever gathered on Sundays in the first place was to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. In a way, every Sunday is a “mini-Easter.” We come together to give thanks for the grace of God, and for all the ways that grace is seen and lived each day. It’s not that we don’t have our troubles, trials and disappointments. But we know that God is with us, and we are grateful for the healing and hope that goes with us through such times. So celebration doesn’t mean that we’re whistling past the graveyard, or pretending that everything is perfect in our lives. I don’t know how it looks to you when you come into the sanctuary on Sundays, but it never fails to lift my spirits. I sit down, look out on all of you, and give thanks for your lives. I don’t know everything that’s going on with you, but I know enough to be amazed. Here is a couple that’s really seen each other through some difficult seasons, and still look at each other with the eyes of love. Here is someone who is searching for a sense of direction and purpose in their life. Here is someone carrying more than probably anyone else really knows. Here is someone who can barely contain their joy. I see hope and wonder, trouble and sorrow, excitement and joy. It’s a little like the world’s richest tapestry. The individual threads don’t always make perfect sense, and it’s hard to see the pattern when we’re right up close. But if you stand back a little and see more of the whole picture, it really is quite beautiful. And that’s just one congregation, in one small corner of this world – imagine how it looks from God’s perspective. In the month of October we have plenty of reasons to celebrate. We’ll be joining with Christians around the world to share the Lord’s Supper on World Communion Sunday, October 7. It’s a reminder to ourselves, and a sign to the world, that we are one family in the midst of our many differences. The next Sunday, October 14, is Laity Sunday, when our preacher will again be the church’s Lay Leader, Earl Butler. I know for many people this is a favorite Sunday, and I try not to take that personally! I am glad and grateful for his leadership and helpfulness in this and many other ways. And on October 28 we’ll gather for our annual Celebration Sunday, when we give thanks to God for the mission we plan to share in the coming year. We’ll have a wonderful brunch after each of the morning services, and an excellent dinner after 3rd service. As I said, Christian worship should always be about celebration, but this month gives us even more reasons to come together in joy and thanksgiving. See you around! Grace and peace,

Children’s Ministries Kid Zone After School Program in Full Swing We are well into our first month of the Kid Zone after school program for 2007/2008. We have the biggest enrollment yet, but there’s still room for you! For more information, contact Lisa Williams at 377-7302.

Acolyte Appreciation & Training We recognized our 2006/2007 Acolytes on Sunday, September 23rd for their service in the previous year. If your Acolyte was unable to be there to receive their appreciation gift, contact Lisa Lehman so we can get it to you. We also welcomed 10 new Acolytes during our training session that same day. If your child would like to become an Acolyte, but missed the training session, Lisa Lehman can schedule a one-on-one session at another time. Acolyte duties are open to all kids in 4th through 8th grade.

Can You Volunteer One Hour Once a Month for Sunday School? If so, you can help us fill out our Sunday School staff for the year! We are looking to fill one more teaching position for the 2nd Sunday of each month at the 8:30 am service. Each Sunday (except Communion Sunday on the 1st Sunday of the month), we have a team of 3 people for each service to help our Lead Teacher, Stevie Lorentzen, with Sunday School, You just show up 10 to 15 minutes before the service to get your instructions, work for one hour, and you’re done! One hour, once a month. What could be easier to help enrich our kids with lessons to last a lifetime!

LOGOS Our annual LOGOS Christian enrichment program began Wednesday, September 26th, from 3:00 to 5:30 pm for elementary, and 3:30 to 5:30 pm for preschool. The program lasts through May. The children experience a variety of activities all centered around a different Biblical theme each week. Activities include craft, singing, games and Bible study. The children also receive a hearty snack to fuel them through the event. Contact the Kid Zone office if you are interested in participating.

Thank You for Our New Van! Some of you may have noticed a beautiful NEW Toyota Sienna minivan parked daily in our parking lot. It is the second vehicle in our church possession and will be used extensively for our children’s and youth programs as well as the occasional adult field trip! And we are now able to expand our ability to pick up kids from school to attend our Kid Zone after school program . You will see our Kid Zone logo on the doors of

our “fleet” of two vans, plus Kid Zone staffers who put the magnetic sign on their own car door while driving our kids here. This was funded completely by the following donors, and we want to extend our deepest appreciation for their great generosity: The Barbara Biddle Memorial Fund The Fischer Family Doug Kendle & Mary Harris Peter & Lisa Williams Bill & Caitlin Szieff Chris & Dave Larson Tim & Silva Will Elizabeth Rakas Georgia Tredennick Kenneth Nexx The Morimoto Family Anna Chang The Khoshkholgh Family The Abbasi Family Anonymous donors rounded out the total needed to purchase the van and our sincere gratitude goes to them as well.
