P&C News

Dear Parents The new PNC executive for 2019 - Ruth Forbes (president) Jessica Oats (Secretary) Hannah Cullen (Treasurer) - would like to extend an invitation to all Osborne parents to join our PNC. We are in great need for parents who can support us, as we are only a small school we need as many parents as possible. We are eager to get started on fundraising for this year to be able to do a few upgrades to our school such as fans for the dance hall. A few ideas for this year include: Chocolate Drive, catering at the Clare Cricket Carnival, Rotary Community Raffle, Home Hill Harvest Festival Pet Show, Ag N Vet Sausage Sizzle plus a few more local sausage sizzles perhaps at Woolworths and a cake stall at Coles. These events are extremely easy to attend and are generally not an all-day event. There is not a lot involved in being a PNC member. We have the odd meeting where we all get a chance to discuss ideas for the school and have a general catch up with some nibbles and drinks. When we have a fundraiser planned, it is just a few hours of your time, maybe even less if we have enough helpers. More hands make light work and remember it’s all for the kids. This invitation also extends to grandparents and other family and non-family members that might be interested in helping out our school. Our next PNC meeting will be held on Friday 10th of May at 3:15pm conveniently held straight after school so you have no need to have to drive back out again. The kids get to have an extra play together while we talk about how we can help them have the best school life we can provide. The Osborne PNC Committee all hope you can attend and help us out, everyone is welcome!! P&C Executive

Attendance

Our current attendance rate for this semester is 90.9% (as at 29 March 2019). This is fabulous – well done everyone! It is fantastic to see all of our kids at school every day, this is vital to their learning and ongoing success at school. If your child is going to be absent, please ensure that you call, send a text message or an email explaining why your child will not be at school if they are going to be absent. In 2019, we are aiming to keep our whole school attendance above 95% - remember Every Day at School Counts!

2019 Student Resource Scheme

Thank you to those families who have already completed payment. Full payment will be required by the end of Term 1, 2019.

Buddy Reading

Buddy Reading with C&K Kindy will start again next week. This year our Year 4-6 students will be visiting the Kindy to be ‘buddy readers’ for the kindy kids. This is a great opportunity for them to improve their oral reading skills and social skills. Mrs Marchioni or Miss Laidlow will be taking the students into the Kindy 3 times per term.

Hi 5 & Stop-Think-Do

At school, we use the Hi 5 strategy to help increase children’s coping strategies and resilience in the playground. Hi 5 is a strategy children can use when another student is annoying them or is not treating them respectfully. The Hi 5 steps are:

1. Ignore 2. Talk friendly 3. Walk away 4. Talk firmly – ‘Stop it! I don’t like it’ 5. Tell a teacher

We are also encouraging the ‘Stop-Think-Do’ strategy for children when they are feeling upset, confused or angry. Please reinforce these strategies with your child at home

Healthy Lunches

We have noticed lately that some children are coming to school with large amounts of high-sugar foods in their lunchboxes. Please try to limit the amount of high sugar foods such as chocolates, chips, cakes and biscuits that you include in your child’s lunchbox. While these might be tasty treats, they do not assist children in their concentration and ability to remain on task during class. Why are healthy lunches important? A healthy school lunch provides sound nutrition to establish a lifetime of healthy habits and the energy your child needs for the rest of their busy day.

Provides Key Nutrients

Limits Fat Intake

Prevents Obesity

Boosts Energy and Grades We understand the challenge busy families face around packing a nutritious lunch box that kids will actually eat. The Woolworths website has some fun and easy to prepare lunch box recipes your kids are sure to love. For more information visit: https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/recipes/fresh-food-kids/lunch-boxes

Makerspace

This year, we are continuing to develop our ‘Makerspace’ in our classroom. This space is linked closely to the Science and Technologies strands of the curriculum and is aimed at encouraging crativity and developing design skills in students. Working within a Makerspace also encourages skills such as resilience, tinkering, prototyping and lateral thinking. To make our Makerspace successful, we are seeking donations of clean recyclable materials such as cardboard tubes, corflute board, bottle tops, plastic containers, fabric, rubber and any other materials which can be repurposed by the students in their designs. We particularly need small cardboard boxes such as toothpaste boxes to use in box construction activities.

ANZAC Day

Once again we will be participating in the Home Hill ANZAC Day Memorial Parade. Please meet at 10:30am on Thursday 25 April opposite the Ambulance Centre in 10th Avenue. The march will proceed down 10th Avenue, turn left onto 8th Street, then left onto 9th Avenue, arriving at Memorial Park for the ceremony. Parents are also welcome to join us in the march, please wear sun-safe clothing. I would encourage all of our children to attend this important event. Children will need to

wear their full school uniform, hat and closed shoes. They are welcome to bring a water bottle if they would like to. Woolworths Earn & Learn This year we will be participating the Woolies Earn and Learn promotion. As a small school, this is an excellent way for us to enhance our school resourcing with no cost to us. Stickers will be available between 1 May and 25 June 2019. Attached is a collection sheet for your family, alternatively you can just send the stickers back to school and we will attach them to a collection sheet. Please encourage your friends and family to support us by placing their stickers in our box at the front of the Ayr Woolworths store.
