3 The OSU Network
Many research-related buildings have networks run by various departmental IT organizations.
• CEOAS• Engineering• Forestry• Science• Ag. Science
Port-speeds and capacity vary by building & network. IS works with dept. IT:
• brings 10G core feed to building/department• placement of wifi• cabling standards
Please contact your IT support provider to find out more details.
In-Building networks
4
• New CoreDesigned to be redundant, scalable, secure. 10Gbps to most buildings not served by a departmental network.
• WifiAbout 50% high density Wireless-AC.Total about 2000+ access points (excl Residence Halls).Centrally managed by IS.
• Remote Campus networksHMSCOSU Cascades
OSU ‘commodity’ Networks
• Funded by NSF grant.
• Fast, 40G, connections between research data centers.
• Isolates research data from student and enterprise traffic
• This allows for much faster moving of data on campus
Eg.:
2TB of data @ 1Gbps ⇒ just under 5 hours to transfer.
2TB @ 10Gbps ⇒ about 30 minutes.
2TB @ 40Gbps ⇒ just over 7 minutes!

Research Network - cont.
• Currently implemented between CGRB and SARL
• Initial tests with 10G servers on this connection:
Research Network - cont.
• Various other locations connected, not yet in operation.
KEC, Dearborn, Gilbert, Cordley, Hinsdale
• Scheduled fast transfers to remote sites through use of DTN
(Data Transfer Nodes)
• Governance, onboarding process, etc. in development.
Research Network - cont.
• Fast network envisioned for research, with the ability to transports large datasets.
• Between research institutions in the US
• Many research-related organizations connected as well. XSEDE, ESNet, etc.
• Many large cloud providers connected (Google, Amazon, etc.)
• Connections to research networks abroad.
Connection to other researchers:Internet 2

OSU is connected to I2 in Portland
• Current connection is 20Gbps in Portland 2 x 10Gbps, north and south path.
• Direct access to OHSU, UO, PSU via the In-State network, connected together in Portland.
• Fast access to many research institution in US and around the world.
• Planning stage for upgrade to 100Gbps next fiscal year. Here is why...

Ongoing Information Services (IS) InvestmentsRecent upgrades to wifi & network in:
Valley Library, Milam, Kidder, Gilkey
LINC, Strand, Cascade Hall
Worked with partners in CoE, CEOAS to upgrade wifi
Ongoing or planned:
Furman Hall, OSU Cascades Acad. Building
Cordley 1109, other large auditoriums
Ongoing annual investments in upgrades are focussed on
teaching impact.

Upcoming Large IS Investments
$10M debt service funding for:
Outside / underground plant, benefits to you:
• Secondary communications hub on west side. Will provide some redundancy to network services.
• Alternate fiber route fiber to key buildings. Will provide continuing services should main hub in Kerr fail.
Inside buildings, benefits to you:
• Building wiring upgrades in Nash, Ballard, Moreland, others as funding allows
• In-building fiber upgrades to allow for future growth(40G, 100G, and beyond)
