Chapter 12 “Golden”

Chapter 12 SummaryThe Curtis boys get to stay together, but more importantly learn that they need to support each other because all they have is each other. In the copy of Gone With the Wind there is a letter from Johnny which allows Ponyboy to accept the fact that Johnny killed Bob and that Johnny is dead. It also allows Ponyboy to discover what it means to “stay gold”—to live and love life for all it has to offer. Ponyboy immediately begins writing his theme for his English class, thus becoming The Outsiders.

Song AnalysisJill Scott’s “Golden” is a song about living and loving life the way you want to and not feeling like you owe anyone anything because you have God’s approval. This relates to Ponyboy because he realizes that life is about choices; no matter a person’s circumstances it is ultimately up to them to make the best life for themselves and to enjoy it.
