2010 P.A.C.E. Summer session opened with a rock and roll thrill! The first theme of the summer was Camp Rock and the kids got into the beat from day one. Each class cele-brated theme in a unique way. Some of the groups got a

little crafty by making instruments, while others had sing a-longs, band jammed sessions and dance parties. At the end

of the week, most of the students from P.A.C.E. enjoyed watching the movie ‘Camp Rock’. The mood and the up beat tempo of the week created an exciting path for the remain-

der of the P.A.C.E. summer.

The halls at P.A.C.E. were transformed during American Landmark Week to reflect our landscape and our heritage. If you hiked around the building, you might have found yourself at the foot of Mt. Rush-more or in front of the reflection pool at the Washington Monument. Our devoted young citizens could also have given you a tour of the Statue of Liberty, complete with school made crowns and torches! The Award winning film “ALL ABOARD AMERICA” provided an entertaining way to have the children develop a fun sense of their American Heritage. Led by a Bald Eagle named Rudy B.E. and his companions, Stars (the dog) and Stripes (the cat), the characters boarded a train and explored awe-inspiring American Landmarks, like the Grand Canyon and the Lincoln Memorial. Clever music, like “The Famous Guys in Rock” was mixed with classic American favorites to complete the students’ experience. What an American Adventure!

During “Storybook Villains Week” the students of P.A.C.E. were lucky enough to watch a program on “Peter and the Wolf.” It is an adaptation of a traditional Russian folk tale set to music. Each different instrument or melody represents a different character. Our story begins with Peter (our main character) visiting his grandfather, who lives in a cottage during the summer. Peter is warned by his grandfather time and again to stay inside the garden gate and not play in the meadow as it is near the forest, and what if a wolf should come? Like most young kids Peter is not afraid and cannot resist the temptation of romping around with the animals. Of course, the wolf does come and he swallows Peter’s duck (whole). Well Peter is determined to capture the wolf and he comes up with a plan to do so. Peter was successful with his plan; he captured the wolf and saved his duck. The hunter then appears and is amazed at Peter’s bravery and cleverness. Peter explains how the wolf has changed his way and offers an idea to take the wolf to a zoo where he shall live. The pro-gram was filled with many learning experiences of friendship, conflict, and resolution.

the very last one on earth? The Crabgrass Puppet Theater told this wonderful story that made every-one in the audience ponder this very question. Students laughed at the hilarious characters and story while adults were amazed at the elabo-rate set pieces and puppets. Every-

Students and adults were treated to a whimsical puppet show entitled, The Last Dragon on Earth. For as long as anyone can remember, princes have killed dragons and res-cued princesses. But what happens if the princess doesn’t need rescu-ing, and the dragon to be killed is

one was extremely impressed and we all look forward to seeing The Crabgrass Puppet Theater again next year!

The Brain Show

During "Million Dollar Question" Week, the students of P.A.C.E. had an opportunity to be con-

testants on the Brain Mania Game Show. Once again, Mayor McCormac joined the students to defend his

title. This year, as an added twist, our very own P.A.C.E. teachers were involved in making up the gen-eral knowledge questions that were asked based on our six weekly themes. In addition to answering the questions correctly, contestants had to incorporate silly dance moves in order to earn their points. Eve-

ryone had a blast!

Week 5 theme is Pace safari. As you look around the classrooms their is an abundance of wildlife

depicted here at Pace. Animals are everywhere you lookLions, tigers and bears are just the beggining. On one of the walls outside B-13 a giant bulletin wallboard brings a safari to life here in Pace 2010.

This years lazer light show theme was safari animals and their habi-tat which excited the crowd with both visual and musical entertain-ment. Watching the many children get on their busses at the end of

the day with various arts and crafts representing this weeks sa-fari theme shows the excitement shared by both teachers and stu-

dents during Pace Safari week!

P.A.C.E. Goes Green!

P.A.C.E. is going green and we’ve kicked it off with a week dedicated to the environ-ment. The students in the last week of P.A.C.E. learned about the “Three R’s” and how to “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle”. They enjoyed two performances dedicated to teaching them about the earth and why we need to conserve. The students learned songs, rhymes, and watched puppet shows to teach them about this very important topic. Many classes learned how to sort recycling and what can be recycled. They also learned different ways to conserve water and energy. To top this week off,

P.A.C.E. is even conserving paper by producing this newsletter online!

Math Games and Study Island.

Joanne Horvath

The Summer of 2010 saw many changes at PACE. Trips were eliminated from the program, but through technology B, C,and D groups were able to visit Study Island and other educational websites each day to continue their journey to SUCCESS. While Study Island was the destination for most of the students, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders, as well as, some of the pre-school children, reinforced shape, color, number recognition and problem solving at www.sheppardsoftware.com and www.internet4classrooms.com

These websites are free and meet standards for all grade levels and skills.

Sadly, PACE 2010 will end soon, but the children and I had fun, and Learned some new and exciting websites to make learning fun. It was an unforgettable trip!

Speech and Language PACE 2010

The speech and language sessions began “Rocking Out in PACE” sitting around the campfire with our favorite Camp Rock vocabulary. We made “Fish in the River” using celery, goldfish and cream cheese. We told our favorite camp stories and sang our favorite campfire songs. We then journeyed to American Landmarks. We learned important facts about The Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, The Washington Monument and The Lincoln Memorial. We pretended to be visitors writing to our fami-lies about what we saw and learned. We used vocabulary to describe features of each landmark. Storybook Villians Week was a scream for all. We read Jack in the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs and Snow White. We discovered that hard work and honesty always prevails. The Million Dollar Question was answered during week 4. Who, What, Where, When and Why were the questions asked in WH Bingo. All the children came out winners. We journeyed to far off places during PACE SAFARI WEEK. We sang about five little pesky monkeys and frogs. We searched for lions, and tigers and alligators in Vocab Bingo. We followed rhinoceros’s directions to complete an activity page. Hunting for other animals was a trip for all ages.

Going Green Helps Keep Our Planet Clean was the motto for week 6. All of the Speech and Language groups will remem-ber simple steps to achieve that Goal.

Speech and Language was “HOT” this summer. We maintained all our skills.

Fun in the sun

July was one of the hottest months in a longtime but the Physical education students played cool games in the air condi-tioned all purpose room. While celebrating a different theme each week the students played basketball, football, and volley-ball. We had a great Nintendo Wii day with five different in-teractive games. We also pretended to be animals on a safari and played a life size game of memory. Fun was had by all and Miss Stephen cannot wait to do it again next year.

Reading/Writing Lab

Another fun-filled summer at P.A.C.E. began with greetings for old friends and introductions for new ones. Taking a stroll through the hallways and in classrooms once again conjured images of the many activities that would follow throughout the next six weeks in our extended school year program.

As the writing lab facilitator for the second year, I was able to conduct exciting and, of course, fun language arts activities with all classes in the program! From pretend play and alphabet games to performing dramatic roles from classic stories, making our own Statue of Liberty crowns to compiling lists of our favorite animals, and even rewriting our own (fictional) versions of well-known stories…what an active, awesome, and amazing mix of students who were all smiles and raised hands ready to take on any challenge!

Amid a climate of much change and many differences in the Woodbridge Township School District this year, our students and staff have been able to move forward with patience, grace, and fervor for the knowledge that drives us. It has been another wonderful summer at P.A.C.E!

Nurse

Dear Parents, We nurses have had a busy but enjoyable summer this year. Along with the usual lumps, bumps and boo-boos we have had the pleasure of working with a terrific staff and wonderful children. It makes our day when children simply have to come in and show us what they've done for the day. The relaxed atmosphere of PACE gives us the opportunity to truly get to know your children which is a rewarding experience, to say the least. We have been able to calm their fears, find lost lunches, go on trips, dispense medications and generally be a source of informa-tion for anyone who expresses the need. Thank you for sharing your children with us. We hope to be able to serve you again next year. Sincerely, Mrs. Giannone and Mrs. De Noyelles

Counseling

It’s been a wonderful summer counseling at PACE. The children have worked on resolving conflicts on their own, working together to

achieve a common goal, and talking problems out before they escalate. There are always diffi-cult days, but the staff at PACE has worked

together to make it a pleasant experience for all. Counseling at PACE is a group effort shared

by all staff and students. We look forward to seeing you all next year.

Enjoy the rest of the summer.

Mr. Barnett’s Preschool We have been slammed with fun and educational activities from the minute the kids got off the bus. During our Camp Rock theme, we got jiggy with it as we held a dance party and created our own band. With our American Landmarks theme, we became acquainted with Miss. Liberty and then built the Washington Monument from sugar cubes. Trip trap, trip trap, went the bridge as the students acted out the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff during our Storybook Vil-lain theme. Every child was a winner during our $1,000,000 Question theme. The children took turns spinning the big wheel of questions and earning a sweet prize. During our Safari theme we brushed off our chef’s hats as we made tiger striped cookies. We concluded the summer by Going Green. The children learned about the important limited resources we have on our planet and we cannot waste them. .

Getting to the good stuff…

With the water slide and the sprinklers, the kids loved every wet second of the Water Slide-A-Thon! The pre-schoolers hung onto every minute of two great shows related to our Storybook Villains theme. Naturally, the P.A.C.E picnic was a HUGE hit! The kids had a lot of fun.

A BIG thank you goes out to the parents of the preschool class for all of your support!

Miss. Debbie and Miss Faith touched the hearts of 24 precious children. There are not enough words to express all of the gratitude. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!

A2…am & pm We had such a wonderful time at P.A.C.E…we painted & did a craft everyday…We played

outside and went to shows. I think the kids loved our sing-a-longs we had everyday in

class the most….We also had a great time at the Slide-A-Thon. Thank you to everyone for making this a wonderful summer. Not only did we have fun, we learned a lot too!

The A-3 Fabulous Fish were led by Mrs. Zecchino and assisted by Ms. Sherry, Miss Jessica and Miss Mackenzie. Through the summer, the fish related basic school readiness skills to the P.A.C.E. themes. It was exciting to strum a real guitar and turn up the amplifier during “Camp Rock Week.” It was also interesting to create a chart depicting how many students had a guitar at home. We “rocked” at spelling and tracing our names and learning about other in-struments. Then, we took our show on the road and viewed many “American Landmarks.” We made our own famous “HOLLYWOOD” signs (and had fun stamping other letters) and we built the Washington Monu-ment from real miniature bricks! During “Storybook Villain Week” we

tricked the Troll under the bridge in The Three Billy Goats Gruff and ran away from a number of hungry villains in The Gingerbread Man. Our per-formances were complete with props! Another villain we met was the wolf in The Three Little Pigs. We had a chance to compare heavy and light as we built houses from different mate-rials. Our “Million Dollar Question” this summer was “How would you spend your money?” It was fun to hear about and chart the things our children would buy. We also played lots of classic games, focusing on lis-tening skills, turn taking and respect-ing others. We went green during “P.A.C.E. Goes Green Week” with many recycling projects, like making recy-cled paper and turning water bottles

into art. Getting lost in the jungle during “Safari Week” was certainly exciting! We used our animal friends to count, color and pretend. You could hear A-3 singing and laughing throughout the jungle as we partici-pated in our Preschool Sing-A-Longs. A-3 would like to thank the preschool families for supporting the program in every way!

The A4 Clowns along with Mrs. Devitt, Miss Jordan, Miss Allie and Miss Linda have had a very exciting summer at P.A.C.E. 2010! Each day we were busy practicing important preschool skills like letters, col-ors, shapes and numbers as well as social skills and language develop-ment. The children quickly learned and followed the routine and sched-ule for each day, transitioning easily from one activity to another. Each week had a theme that incorporated a variety of fun and engaging activities from making instruments and playing in a marching band to mixing and preparing special snacks and treats to share with the class. Both the Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood were here during Story Book Villains Week-- what fun we had dressing up in cos-tumes!! Everyone enjoyed our Alphabet Bingo games. They were learning experiences that came with prizes-- it was a WIN/WIN for eveyone. The children even went on a safari around the classroom to discover animals in the wild. Some were easy to find, others were "camoflaged" and much harder to locate. What wonderful explorers we had! The highlights of the summer for the children were the puppet shows, Water Slide-A-Thon and the wonderful P.A.C.E. Picnic. For me, the highlights were spending the summer with a fantastic group of chil-dren and watching them learn and grow each day!!

Smiles were being worn by the B-1 Happy Faces at P.A.C.E. this summer. The shows, programs, and learning activities all contrib-uted to their fun.

“Peter and the Wolf” and “The Last Dragon on Earth” were very entertaining and thought-provoking. The laser program, the game show, and the Day of Safety were also educational and fun!

Best of all was the water Slide-a-thon. All the pools and sprinklers kept us cool on that hot afternoon. The 2 water slides were most exciting as we climbed to the top and slid down to a wa-tery landing! Absolutely the BEST!!!!

Katelynn, Danyal, Alexis, Andrew, Muhammad, Mark, Marc, Ja-son, Sabrina, Eric, Matthew, Krista, and Shan are already looking forward to P.A.C.E. 2011!!!

The B-2 Frogs

wasted no time hopping into fun and learning this summer at PACE! During

Camp Rock Week, we learned about differ-ent instruments and made our own edible

microphones. We made our own bald eagle and pretended to visit different landmarks during American Landmarks Week. During Storybook Villain Week we read Peter Pan and imagined how the story would be dif-ferent if Captain Hook changed his ways and was no longer the villain. We played

Jeopardy, Bingo, and had a Relay Race that tested our spelling skills during Million Dol-lar Question Week. We made various ani-mal puppets, including a frog, during Safari Week. During PACE goes Green Week, we

did many different things to help con-serve, including turning the lights off when

we left the room and using wipe-off boards instead of paper. We had a great

summer! B-2

Miss Kerbis Mr. Brian

Mrs. Ratajczak

The B3 Rockets are buzzing through PACE. We have been practicing our addition and subtraction facts, brushing up on the alphabet, and creating exciting crafts. We zoomed through American Pride week; learning

about our country's values and beliefs. We were excited to learn about stroy book villian's and see them in action watching Peter and The Wolf, and The Last Dragon.

We wipped up plenty of snacks; making sand, dirt, and rice krispies treats. We enjoyed ice pops and baking cookies. The B3 Rockets are racing toward the end of PACE. We look foward to helping our envirnmonet during

"Going Green Week" by recycling and teaching others how to help the Earth.

B4 Busy Bees

N. Anderson, D.Nolan, L. Drakoulis, M.Maglione

When PACE bee-gan, B-4 strived to bee-come the best we could be. We adjusted to routines and made new friends. As the weeks flew by we realized what busy bees we really were, and what bee-utiful work we could create.

We rocked our classroom by making tambourines and also learned about camp safety during Camp Rock week. We made s'mores and pretended to sit around a campfire and tell stories.

During National Landmark Week we studied our patriotic symbols, put together a USA floor puzzle, and created sparklers.

B-4 enjoyed the Peter and the Wolf play and The Last Dragon puppet show. In our classroom hive we read a book titled "Dragon Pizzeria" by Mary Morgan. It was about two dragons who opened a pizzeria and delivered special pizzas to characters of Fairy Tale Land. We loved it so much we wanted to read it over and over.

We had fun at the game show during game week and played BINGO almost everyday. Brain quest questions were very challenging and we improved our math skills with math games.

Safari Week was voted B4's favorite theme. We made rain forest posters that displayed which animals lived in each level of the rain forest. We went on a safari hunt wearing our safari hats and using our binoculars.

As our last week buzzed by, B4 practiced recycling and had fun at the picnic and sing a long.

B4 had a great summer of fun with friends and wish everyone a great bee-ginning for the opening school year.

put on their author's hat and cre-ated their very own fairy tales. The B-5 Fantastic Frogs hopped into “Million Dollar Question” week and spent their time playing many fun games like Scrabble Junior and Math Baseball. As “P.A.C.E Safari” week came roaring in, the B-5 Fan-tastic Frogs became zoologist and studied animal habitats, made edi-ble “dirt”, and learned about many different animals. Finally as P.A.C.E came to its last week, “P.A.C.E Goes Green” week, the Fantastic Frogs

soared into outer space to talk about the universe and ways to help preserve planet Earth. While hav-ing all this fun, the B-5 Fantastic Frogs also worked very hard on their math, reading, and writing skills. The B-5 Fantastic Frogs will miss everyone at P.A.C.E. and wish them much luck in September as they start a new school year.

The B-5 Fantastic Frogs led by Mr. Valguarnera and Mrs. Grzy-bowski had a fantastic summer at P.A.C.E. To begin their summer, the Fantastic Frogs hopped right into “Welcome to Camp Rock” week by rocking out with instruments and talking about their favorite music. Next we marched into “American Landmarks” week and colored patri-otic pictures and talked about his-torical landmarks like the Statue of Liberty. During “Storybook Vil-lains'” week, the Fantastic Frogs

=Mr. Evangelista’s B-6 Bulldogs took a bite out of learning at P.A.C.E. Dur-ing “Welcome to Camp Rock Week.” Music was the theme and CD covers were the projects. We designed our own based on their favorite music. Plus the students came up with their own band name. It is amazing how creative the Bulldogs performed!

“American Landmarks Week” we learned all about the flag and what it represents. We discussed all the reasons we are happy we live in Amer-ica. We made flags with 13 reasons, one for each stripe on the flag. We also discussed such things as The Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, and the White House to name a few of our National Landmarks.

Then it was “Storybook Villains Week.” The students were given a task of re-writing endings to their favorite fairy tales such as Cinder-ella, the Three Little Pigs, and The Princess and the Frog. It was great to see the students use their imagina-tion to come up with such great end-ings.

“Million Dollar Question Week” was a lot of fun. We played Jeopardy and

various math games to sharpen our skills. We played BINGO to enhance our vocabulary. But what we had the most fun doing was participating in the Game Show at the end of the week. Some of your luckier students were chosen to play. This week by far was our most enjoyed week.

The next week was “P.A.C.E. Safari Week.” Our students had the oppor-tunity to see a laser light show with all types of animals. The students were able to follow this up by drawing and writing about which was their favorite animal.

Last but not least “P.A.C.E. Goes Green Week.” The students took part in a discussion of how we can help save the Earth from pollution. We talked about turning off the wa-ter when we are not using it to brush our teeth, turning lights off when we are not in the room, and always re-membering to recycle when we can.

Mr. Matt and Mr. Evangelista, along with all the B-6 Bulldogs, had an ex-cellent summer learning experience. We will all remember the enjoyable times.

B-7 Mr Bernstein

B-7 had a fantastic summer! We studied Math in new and exciting ways. We rocked out to the Beatles and Elvis while exploring several national landmarks. We played Disney Trivia and created our own evil villians. We went on a safari on the playground to search for hidden Math Boxes and learned about the importance of re-cycling. Lastly, we made a movie entitled " Back to P.A.C.E." and had a red carpet premeire! We are so sad the

summer is over!

B-8 Fabulous Fish: Miss Duke, Mr. Grimm, & Ms. Lund Our "Fabulous Fish" have been swimming their way,

Through academic review and fun-filled play! At P.A.C.E. this year, we kicked off our summer with a BANG by evoking our inner rock star! During ”Camp Rock” week, we learned about music, rocks, and even starred on American Idol, thanks to Wii karaoke! To top it off, we made our very own homemade ice cream using “rock” salt! For the celebration of our coun-try's birth, we focused on American Landmarks. It was interesting to learn about the history, symbols, and landmarks that make up our wonderful country. Our third week at camp, we studied “Storybook Villains.” We had the opportunity to read and reread some of our favorite fairy tales and even learn some new ones! The students really enjoyed comparing & con-trasting “Cinderella” with a Wild West version of the story, “Cindy Ellen.” One of our favorite themes this summer was “Million Dollar Question” week. In addition to attending the "Brain Game" game show in the auditorium, we played lots of skill-related games right in our classroom! Some of the student's favorites were "The Price is Right", "Family Feud", and "Wheel of Fortune". Another exciting week was Safari week, during which we refined our research skills by learning about various African and rainforest animals and habitats. Finally, we ended our summer focusing on different ways to conserve energy at school & at home for “P.A.C.E. Goes Green” week. A lesson everyone can learn and benefit from! Overall, it has been an adventurous and educational summer for us all, where memories and friendships have been made that will last a lifetime! Fish: Miss Duke, Mr. Grimm, & Ms. Lund

The B-9 Basketballs rocked the Camp during Camp Rock week by creating records and album covers of

many of today’s famous recording artists. During Villain week, B-9 paid tribute to the characters that make stories exciting by painting portraits and writing Haikus celebrating our favorite “bad guys.” American land-mark week showcased B-9’s ability to work together. The B-9 Basketballs created The Washington Monument and Mount Rushmore after thoroughly studying both of there historic landmarks. B-9 loves PACE!

B-10 Baseballs Miss Fasciale, Mrs. Biondo, Mrs. Shipe and the B-10 Baseballs had a blast this summer at P.A.C.E.! Fun activities and challenging lessons made each day different and excit-ing! With each week came fun pro-jects. During Camp Rock Week, we baked s'mores in homemade solar ovens using pizza boxes and foil! Yummy! We made new additions to Mount Rushmore by including our own cute, loveable faces on the mountain during American Land-marks Week! We created our own

super-villains, designed our very own board games and felt like we were on a real safari as we learned about different animals and their habitats! We had lots of laughs and made lot of memories as we worked together and learned new things! This summer was a success! See you next year!

The B-11 Rockstars rocked the camp the minute they stepped off the bus. Along with lebe often heard booming from thead band members Coach Nyers and Mr. Monaco, the rock-stars of B-11 showed off their artistic talents by decorating the wall outside their class-room with an array of individual drawings depicting their favorite villain and United States landmark. Colorful safari animals and album covers hung from the walls of the B-11 "rock studio" classroom. Music could often be heard booming from their classroom all summer. " ROCK ON PACE

C-1 Had a Roaring Good Summer!

Mrs.Rowe’s C-1 preschool class had a roaring good summer at P.A.C.E! Our favorite week was “Safari Week” where we learned about a ton of fun safari animals! We even made up new words to “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” for “We’re Going on a Safari”. We created masks and pretended to be the different safari animals.

We also had a blast during “Storybook Villains Week”! We learned all about what it means to be a villain and how we have to be nice friends. We took turns being the villain when we acted out “The Three Little Pigs”.

During “Welcome to Camp Rock Week” at P.A.C.E. we learned all about instruments! We made an instru-ment collage to practice our coloring and cutting skills. We also played musical chairs and freeze dance. It was so much fun!

C-1 had a productiveand fun summer! We couldn’t have done it without the help and love of Ms.Sharon, Ms. Joanne, Ms. Carly, and Ms. Staci, thank you!

The C-2 Swinging Monkeys- Ms. Monica M., Mrs. Jane M., Mrs. Mary D., and

all the students have been busy all summer. We have been learning our letters, sounds, numbers and col-

ors. Also, we have been learning through play, going to great shows and working with our weekly themes. On some

days we have even enjoyed some outdoor fun with the other classes.

The C-3 Watermelons, David, Divit, Alex, Shreya, Isha, and Valentina, had a fantastic fun filled summer at P.A.C.E. We started out “Rocking’’ during Camp Rock Week and made some musical instruments which we used to march in our own class parade! The next week we celebrated “America’s Landmarks” and created some glitzy art projects using the colors Red, White, and Blue. Storybook Villain Week was really cool as we read some of our favorite stories then discussed Cruella De Vil , The Big Bad Wolf, and The Wicked Witch. “Million Dollar Ques-tion Week” was tons of fun making our own BINGO boards then playing the game as a group! “Safari Week” was lots of fun as our class pretended we were all animals in the Safari and made masks of our favorite animal. “Going Green” was really important to our school because we believe that we should all work together to help save our planet earth. We also went on some amazing field trips such as Bowling, Toys Story 3, Chuckie Cheese, The Rainforest Cafe, and The Staten Island Zoo, where we got to see some of our favorite animals such as pigs, goats, cows, and horses!! We had such a great time with our friends at P.A.C.E. and are looking forward to next year. Ashley and the Watermelons would like to thank Lindsay and Liz for a pleasant and enjoyable summer at P.A.C.E.!!

C-4 The Butterflies The C-4 Butterflies fluttered through the summer at P.A.C.E. quite happily. We began by rockin' out during our first week making guitars and musical notes while sing-ing and dancing! We enjoyed the movie, "Camp Rock" along with our fellow campers. Storybook villain week found us at the movie theater completely immersed in "Toy Story III" ...and popcorn, of course :) We read many stories and were mes-merized by the wolf in the produc-

tion we saw of Peter and the Wolf. P.A.C.E. Safari week turned us into explorers as we traversed the "jungles" of the Staten Island Zoo! Some of our favorites were the snakes, alligators and leopards...oh my! The fish exhibit was really ex-citing too! We made Liberty Crowns while learning about some of Amer-ica's landmarks. We also decorated a cake to resemble the American flag. It tasted pretty good too! Mil-lion Dollar Question week didn't stump us! We participated coopera-tively, taking turns while we played

a variety of games. Finally, Go Green week allowed us to make bird feeders using bagels, peanut butter and seeds! It also reminded us to continue recycling in our classroom, which we do quite well. In addition to all of this excitement we contin-ued to perform classroom assign-ments so that we don't lose any of our wonderful skills. It has been a terrific summer! See you next year - Miss Marilyn, Sahithi, Carissa, Ma-son, Jayin, Adarsh

C-6 Bumblebees Have a Buzzing Summer!

Summer 2010 has been a blast for the C-6 Bumblebees! Our group began PACE with open minds and happy faces ready to learn and be involved with our community! Our first outing was to see Toy Story 3 at Menlo Park Mall. We also visited the Staten Island Zoo, Woodbridge Bowling Alley, Chuck E. Cheese and The

Rainforest Cafe! All of these trips went along with our cool themes this summer! Besides trips, we also worked on our regular aca-demic and social skills and some pretty cool theme activities. We made our own boardgames for mil-lion dollar question week, made smores and guitars for camp rock, and saw an awesome laser show for safari week. We played a cool landmark "travel" game in gym for American Landmarks

week! We ate at the Rainforest Cafe and learned to recycle for going green and read lots of stories involving vil-lains for storybook viilain week! Aria, Devin, Tteeffe, Elijah, Tristan, Ms. Colleen and Ms. Leticia had a great summer at PACE!

The C-7 Buzzing Bess has a fantastic summer here at P.A.C.E.. We started off the summer as rock-n-roll super stars, and with our handmade guitars we rocked it out! We cruised into the next week with a stop at Mt. Kidmore, where we traded out our President’s stone faces for our own ver-sion! We read about storybook villains and saw new ones on the big screen during Toy Story 3. We traveled through a jungle safari at the Staten Is-land Zoo, and ate jungle food at the Rainforest Café.

It was an amazing summer that went by so fast that you didn’t have time to blink. Brandon, Michael, Rylan & Tony had great fun while making lasting memories. We also worked hard on our academics and kept up with every-thing we learned last year. It was a jam-packed summer and we are sad to see it end. Ms. Hershey & Ms. Rose will miss you, but we look forward to a fantastic school year for everyone!

C-8 rocked in the beginning of PACE with their knowledge of instruments and bands and they kept that Tempo going all through the summer of PACE! We had many memorable experiences, fabulous learning excursions; one of our favorites was the Rainforest Café. We remembered all we learned back at PACE about the Rainforest, and enjoyed seeing it come to fruition! At the Safe House Expo Day, two of our students asked wonderful questions about keeping Safe and bicycle safety and that helped all the other students learn this important information! We are proud of you, Erika and Justin! Bowling brought out our competitive edge, as Stephen, RJ, Erika, Utkarsh, Justin, and Dinesh all tried to give their best to the game! They proved to be a hard team to beat!! Awesome job, class!! The Brain Show also was challenging and fun! We did extremely well and won medals for our outstanding perform-ance. After all this fun and learning, we are sorry PACE is over, and anxiously await next summer!!

lars and pretended to find animals in the jungle. We used creativity and followed the directions to make wonderful arts and crafts. We made awesome robots and other characters out of used materials during “PACE Goes Green” week. Of course, we had to spend time working on academics. We also vis-ited Wegmans, Woodbridge Center Mall, the Bowling Alley, the Rain Forrest Café, we saw Toy Story 3. We spend time cooking and inter-acting with our peers. Unfortunately our time had to come to an end. We had a great time to-gether, but we have to say good bye. Have a happy, healthy, and safe summer. Joyce Kenney

We even created “rock n’ roll” marble art which added color to the room. Next, we discovered a multitude of patriotic symbols and places, during American Landmarks week. With a little help from a PowerPoint and child created books, we are sure to enjoy future refer-ences to these historic places. Sto-rybook Villains week lead to a slide-

show presentation of the top 10 meanest Disney villains and a lot of excitement as we talked about the difference between villains and he-roes. Million Dollar Question week brought the Brainshow Mania show where we were able to show how much the Rockets have learned dur-ing PACE. Safari week brought dis-cussions about our favorite animals and a trip to the Rainforest Café where we had exciting adventures of our own. Keeping our planet healthy and clean was the focus of Go Green week and included the

creation of Earth inspired Rice Krispie treats. We would like to thank everyone who has helped us create the won-derful memories we will surely cherish for many years, especially Ms. Ann Marie, Ms. Caitlin, and Mr. Mark.

The P.A.C.E. Parents’ Organization – Summer 2010 We started the summer with a new schedule: a 4-day week, with a slightly longer day – more time each day for learning and fun educational activities. There was no P.A.C.E. on Mondays, so families had time for other things. Some families chose to go to the beach or to a park; some families used the time to rest up between the weekend and the school week.

The P.A.C.E. Parents’ schedule this summer included a “Special Needs Expo”, which was organized by co-president Victo-ria Romanienko. Representatives from about 20 different special-needs organizations, community groups and local businesses gath-ered to offer information about themselves. The various groups targeted not only specific disabilities, but also specific ethnic groups. “Inclusion in the community” was the theme of the keynote speech. This expo showed how we must all include each other, regardless of disability or ethnicity. At the bottom of this page is the contact information for each group. Please – please – refer to this list and think about contacting someone to help you and your child.

We plan to repeat this type of expo next year, as well as many of the other activities that we did this summer and during the past school year. We will collect our “Pennies for P.A.C.E” again, the kids will get wet at the “Slide-A-thon”, we can show our child that they are a precious “GEM”, and parents and siblings can be silly at our “Karaoke Nite”.

On the back of this page is the P.A.C.E. Parents’ Organization calendar. We have events and activities all year long, for your child and your family, so keep it handy!

A Message From the Director We have just completed another “Exciting” Summer, (Our 44th) here at the P.A.C.E. Program. During the six weeks of the program our staff has collaboratively planned to provide our students with many opportunities that have enabled them to experience reinforcement in all types of essential skills that they will use as productive members of our community. Our teachers have created stimulating educational environments and they have crafted interesting lessons and activities that have hopefully motivated our students to succeed. Using an ex-perienced centered, thematic approach to learning, our students were encouraged to continue to develop a “connection” between what’s being learned and the purpose for learning. We are all proud of the results and we hope that all of our students will have their efforts rewarded at home. Our P.A.C.E. Parents’ Group has continued to grow and we are very grateful for all that they do for us. They con-tinue to be successful in securing the funding for our annual picnic and for our P.A.C.E. shirts. With your support for the Fifth Annual P.A.C.E. Slide-a-Thon and our “Pennies for PACE” fundraiser, our parent group has raised ad-ditional funds that will be used to add to the P.A.C.E. experience. The group held a highly successful Special Edu-cation Expo on July 26th and they also continue to meet during the course of the school year when they provide our students with additional theme related activity nights. After each meeting they also conduct a Parents’ Sup-port Group and a Dads’ Support Group in order to discuss some of the issues that parents of special education students must deal with on a day to day basis. Please check your local cable station for some of the group’s up-coming events. You will also be able to locate the P.A.C.E. Parents’ Website as it appears as a link to the Matthew Jago School home page. In addition, please check this site in order to access our 2010 P.A.C.E. Newsletter as we continue our “Going Green” theme by positing it online in an eco-friendly manner. On behalf of all of our students and our staff, we’d like to thank you for sharing your child’s summer with us. Al-though we found it necessary to change the format of the program somewhat this summer, we do believe that with the cooperation of our parents the students benefitted from the changes that we have made. We are ex-tremely fortunate in Woodbridge Township to work with a Superintendent and School Administration that col-laborates with the Board of Education to provide continual support for the Woodbridge Township Extended School Year Program. Their vision and commitment to the P.A.C.E. Program has created many wonderful experi-ences for our kids. Thank you for all of your support this summer. Have a great rest of the summer and a terrific school year!!! We hope to see you next summer during P.A.C.E. 2011. Robert F. Patten P.A.C.E.
