Alex Fahnlander, cur-

rent Youth Governor, pro-

vided an account of what

her experience was as a

part of Youth In Govern-

ment. Fahnlander believes

that she has gained a confi-

dence in herself she did not

possess before the four

years she participated in

YIG. Amazing opportunities

presented themselves for

her as she got to meet new

faces and formed friend-

ships with “people as far

[away] as Washington.”

As Governor, Fah-

nlander’s experience is

rather different because

she is so involved with YIG

issues. When asked how

she got involved, she

stated that she was

“brainwashed” and the idea

of becoming Governor had

been in her mind since

freshman year. Fahnlander

really wanted to serve this

program, and feels ex-

tremely honored to have

been elected to the respon-

sibility of Governor.

This is her last year as

a delegate in YIG and this

knowledge gives her a

“bitter-sweet” feeling.

“It feels strange that

this is my last year as a

part of this program,” she

states. When asked what

advice she would offer the

upcoming Governor, Fah-

nlander said:

“No matter how frus-

trated you get, your love

for this program will always

remain. Remember that

you are doing something

great, and really making a

difference for this […] pro-

gram.”

District III’s Fall District

Conference has always been

a success thanks to the

wonderful advisors. Every

year chapter advisors, Lisa

Weaver, Ken Andoirio, and

Andrew Gascon, work very

hard to make the confer-

ence run as smoothly as

possible and to enhance the

experience for all delegates

in attendance.

Lisa Weaver, the Fort

Myers High School advisor,

had several tasks in order to

prepare for FDC. It was

Weaver’s responsibility to

secure the facility for the

day, arrange plans for

lunch, and make sure that

each chapter had what they

needed, whether it was bills

or being registered in the

Deledex.

Ken Andiorio, the Bar-

ron-Collier High School advi-

sor, and Andrew Gascon,

the Cape Coral High School

advisor, had similar respon-

sibilities when preparing for

the conference. They too

had to collect permission

slips and money, and make

sure that all of the legisla-

tive delegates had submit-

ted their bills. Andiorio ex-

pressed that he didn’t have

to work as hard this year

because he was “blessed

with a good group of lead-

ers,” and his officers took

the initiative to handle the

Every year during and

after the Fall District Confer-

ence, many delegates are

wondering something along

the lines of “What am I go-

ing to do after FDC?” Well,

look no further! The an-

swers are here.

For the Legislative

branch, the delegates will

continue to work on their

bills, do more research, es-

tablish what needs to be

done to work it out, and

search for a lobbyist to get

their bill’s name out there.

They are also encouraged

by veteran YIG delegates to

apply for committee chairs

in a Supporting Officer ca-

pacity.

The Judicial branch will

complete their briefs, proof-

read them, and work on

their arguments.

The lobbyists will are in

the process of building their

client list, and will help their

clients build relationships so

that they can get their bills

to pass.

As for the Press Corps,

we will be working on our

pre-assembly submissions,

and continuing to supply

articles for the monthly

Page Note.

The key to every cam-

paign is, of course, the

goodies that come with it.

This year, there are some

very interesting campaign

ideas from District III.

For instance, Jon

Vollmer, Williams Senate

President candidate, will be

spreading his name by word

of mouth and possibly cam-

paign hats.

Harsha Raju, candidate

for Attorney General, on the

other hand, is planning to

put his face all over the

place.

Alessandra Pelitera, who

is running for Chief Financial

Officer, wants to make cus-

tomized page notes and

wristbands.

Sarim Ahmed, Sullivan

Senate President candidate,

is a bit more ambitious in his

campaigning, making stick-

ers, business cards, and

page notes, as well as using

websites like Facebook and

MySpace to tell delegates of

his candidacy. He also plans

to make a campaign web-

site.

Also this year, some

candidates are using the

assistance of campaign

managers to help them ad-

vertise their candidacy. This

is a tactful way to get sup-

porters and be more profes-

sional.

No matter what the can-

didates plan to do, all of

their ideas are creative and

fun ways to motivate people

to vote for them. If you

have any suggestions, most

candidates are willing to

listen!

Who they are The Athena Lobbying

Firm. Marco Andres-Bohn,

Kristen Michie, Victoria

Nieves, and Alexandra

Voelmle.

What they do This Youth in Govern-

ment lobbyist firm from Fort

Myers High School is here to

“broker information and rela-

tionships” for the legislative

delegates and their bills.

They are here to help

these delegates build rela-

tionships with people who

can speak in other chambers

and in the executive cabinet.

They will help research

and improve the bill’s

chances of passing. They

can also help you find dele-

gate co-sponsors. The lobby-

ist firm is a support system.

How to contact them One of the quickest,

easiest ways to contact the

Athena firm is through their

Facebook page. Or, if you

are at states, you can always

contact them through page

notes!
