Mel began his directing career with West Valley LightOpera in last season's opening show, Cole Porter's"ANYTHING GOES", with performing experience in53 productions, his credits also include assisting thearea's top directors as well as directing 'responsibilityfor "FINNIAN'S RAINBOW" and "SHOWBOAT"forother local theater groups. In June of this year he willproduce and direct a children's and adult's productionof Rodgers and Hamrnerstein's "THE SOUND OFMUSIC" at the newly-organized Saratoga Youth-AdultTheater.
RICH AMES - SidRich made his debut with West Valley as the under-study for Professor Harold Hill in "THE MUSICMAN". His previous experience included supportingroles in local productions of "MOST HAPPY FELLA"and "MAN OF LA MANCHA". He studied voice atHumboldt State College and iscurrently enrolled in theSusan Maher School of voice and diction. He is a stockbroker with Bateman, Eichler, Hill, Richards and hasadaughter, Kirsten.
ANITA NETHERCUTT - BabeThis is Anita's first appearance with West Valley LightOpera. Her theatrical education includes ten yearsvoice training, five years drama, and three years balletwith the San Francisco Ballet. She has had her own. radio show and has been seen locally in productions of'.'OLIVER" and "BORN YESTERDAY". She lives inLos Gatos with her husband and two sons.
TOM HORTI - HinesThis marks Tom's ninth West Valley Light Operaproduction, for which he has taken temporary leaveofabsence from our Board of Directors in order to avoidconflict of interest. In addition to his many WVLOroles he hasbeen seen in numerous other local product-ions including "CARNIVAL" and "MAN OF LA MAN-CHA". Most recently, Tom was co-producer ofWVLO's highly successful "THE MUSIC MAN." He hasbeen employed at Lockheed for the past 15 yearswhere he is presently a designer of computer systems.His wife, Hazel, is also a veteran performer with otherlocal theater groups in the area.
LEE GARAY - GladysAlthough making her debut with West Valley LightOpera, Lee is no stranger to local audiences. She hasappeared in "SHE LOVES ME", "HELLO DOLLY","OKLAHOMA", and "SHOW BOAT". A native of SanFrancisco, she studied drama at San Francisco Stateand Seattle University. She lives in San Jose with herhusband and 2 children.
S. JOHN SMITH - PrezAfter attending the Los Angeles Conservatory of Musicand the Fine Arts Conservatory in Los Angeles, he sangwith a number of opera and light opera groups inSouthern California, including the Hollywood BowlOpera Association. John is active in folk-singing andchurch choir activities in SanJosewhere he now resideswith his wife, Betty Lou. His first appearancewith WestValley was as Ralph Rackstraw in "H. M.S. PINA-FORE" and he was recently seen in "MAN OF LAMANCHA". He isan employee of Lockheed.
MARGE HAND - MabelAs a veteran performer with this Association, localaudiences will remember her for her recent portrayal ofGolde in "FIDDLER ON THE ROOK". This role is herseventh appearance with West Valley, but her experi-ence includes several dramas and two operas. She iscurrently President of "TH E OVE RTU RES" and amember of the "Spice Tones", a small San Josenightclub group. She lives in Los Gatos with herhusband and three daughters.
BOBMcKA Y - Mr. HaslerMost of Bob's experience originated in Philadelphiawhere he acted and directed for over 15 years. He hadappeared in several shows with Grace Kelly's sister,Lizanne, before moving to California in 1967. Sincethen, he has directed "Someone Waiting" for A.R.T.and appeared in "MAME", "MY FAIR LADY","HELLO DOLLY", and "WALTZ OF THE TOREA-DORS". His first appearance with West Valley was in"ON A CLEAR DAY". Bob is married and a self-employed manufacturer's representative.
RITA SMITH - Mae"PAJAMA GAME" is Rita's third production withWest Valley; she is well-known however, to localtheater-goers for her leading roles in "JANUS" and"LADIES IN RETI REMENT" and several supportingcharacter roles in productions too numerous to men-tion. Her dance and voice training are a necessity forthe entertaining she does as a member of the "SpiceTones". She lives in Los Gatos with her husband and sixchildren.
