Two good-sized vehicles were not enough to transport the Dick Bjorneby library to the museum when several museum board members visited Pat Bjorneby in Estero, Florida, last year for the first time. And so in February this year, trustees Bob Karrer, Paul Glassburn, and Kathy Egolf visited Pat once again and returned to the museum with another vehicle packed tightly with gems from the Bjorneby collection.
The books brought back this time included many favorites of Panama Canal book collectors. Among the books are Construction of the Panama Canal (by Sibert and Stevens), Goethals and the Panama Canal (by Howard Melvin Fast), Five Years at Panama (by Wolford Nelson), Panama Canal and Its Makers (by Vaughn Cornish), a Society of the Chagres Yearbook, Red, White and Blue Paradise (by Herbert and Mary Knapp) . . . . It hurts to cut off the list of these very exciting books--some treasured by most Panama Canal aficianados and others known and appreciated by only the most serious Panama Canal book collector. The value of the Panama Canal Museum library constantly grows as more and more individuals and companies learn of the museum and turn to it for answers to their Panama Canal research needs. Most recently the museum supplied a
company in Canada with materials for another textbook in production. This donation of the Bjorneby collection comes at a most opportune time to help supply information and materials to these Panama Canal researchers.
Now we are faced with the challenge of retrieving information from this wealth of sources, some of which have each page filled with valuable information that may be useful to a certain inquirer. Jason Ohman is working on a proposal to begin digitizing the collection so that our search capabilities will be greatly improved. The hope is to obtain grants that will enable us to have the Isthmian Canal Commission Canal Records and the Panama Canal Company/Commission Reviews digitized. This will enable us to seek out a name and find where

all the references to that person are in these sources. What a gigantic amount of information that will put at our finger tips!
In addition to books. the Bjorneby donation included the top of a chafing dish from the Hotel Washington, a General Electric Towing Locomotive plaque, a Panama Railroad lamp, Panama Railroad passes, milk cartons Panama Canal Commission seals, patches, flags, milk cartons, and art prints.
The museum's Board of Trustees is very grateful to people like the Bjornebys and Jason who are giving so much in so many ways to the museum. Their support strengthens the museum on an ongoing basis.
Trustees Bob Karrer and Paul Glassburn are shown with Pat Bjormeby on the last trip to transport the huge Panama Canal hisotical collection Pat, and husband, Dick, spent years building and are now sharing with future generations.

Upon his retirement, he was awarded by Governor Fleming the Master Key to the Locks in the rank of “Honorary Lock Master.”
Halsall is probably the oldest living former employee of the Panama Canal at 104 years “young.” He is in excellent health and is still going strong. At his last birthday party he said, with a twinkle in his eye, “Had I known I would have lived so long, I
would have taken better care of myself!” He has very good recollections of his time with the Canal and tells a story about his early years on the Police Force: “As a fairly new cop, I and another rookie patrolling in the old Corral Area in Ancon came across a dead horse. In trying to write up the report, we found that neither of us could spell the name of the street - Bougainvillea - where the horse was found. So we decided to
drag the horse to another street with a shorter name so we could complete the report!”
As a Centenarian, he still drives his own car, occasionally rides a bicycle and, once in a while, might be seen on a date. His son, Jerry Halsall (BHS ‘52), tells his father that it’s ok to date, but says, “Dad, be sure to stay away from those older women!”
Mr. Edward Hamilton Halsall, who proudly celebrated his 104th birthday on March 28, 2005, has the distinction of being the museum’s oldest member. Born in 1901 in Stamford, Connecticut, Halsall served 8 years in the US Army before joining the Panama Canal workforce in 1928 as a Canal Zone Policeman. During WWII, he served as Head Warden in the townsite of Cocoli until 1943, when he transferred from the Police Division to the Quartermaster Division.
In 1952, he was appointed as the first Chief, Locks Security Branch, where he developed and organized this branch, which later became the Canal Protection Division. He served 10 years in that position and retired from the Panama Canal in 1963 with a total of 42 years US Government Service, nearly 35 of which was with the Panama Canal.
MUSEUM COOKBOOK PROJECT
Opening the Gates to Canal Cuisine, a cookbook published by the museum, written by volunteers, with recipes donated by "Zonians" and friends of the museum. It is a recipe book guaranteed to evoke immediate responses to your memories and all five senses. It is easy to picture oneself in the clubhouses feeling catsup being pumped into holes of a flaky empanada; hearing the soda truck drivers calling as they drive thru the townsites "coke cola", seeing mango trees laden with delicious ripen fruit waiting to be picked; ah, smelling fresh baked Micha Bread and tasting the wonderful tree ripened fruit of bananas, Boquete oranges and papayas. What a unique world!
The cookbook contains a
dedication to the construction workers, tributes/advertisements, some history of food in Panama and the Canal Zone, beautiful artwork by Jerry Fields and 450 recipes spanning from the Construction Days to the present.
The cookbook has recipes such as Liberty Loaf with McAdoo Sauce (Construction Days), Johnny Mazzetti, After Dinner Drinks, Mashed Potato Candy (used during WWII) and many, many favorites. It will be available the first time at the Reunion. Please make plans to purchase the cookbook then or you may reserve a copy by sending a check for $22 plus shipping (and 7% sales tax for Florida residents) to the Panama Canal Museum. The price of the cookbook will increase to $25 after the reunion.

The museum will be an attraction at the Panama Canal Society reunion for the seventh year. One of the two special exhibits will honor the 150th Anniversary of the completion of the Panama Railroad, the first transcontinental railroad in the Western Hemisphere. The exhibit will feature photographs and artifacts beginning in 1850 and continuing up to the new Panama Canal Railway Company now traversing the Isthmus of Panama. In addition, historical displays of railroad functions over history; namely, the Panama Railroad Ships (Ancon, Cristobal, Panama) as well as the hotels Washington and Tivoli will be displayed.
The exhibit ties in with the Annual Luncheon speaker, and the annual 2005 museum calendar and the 2005 Christmas ornament, both of which will be available at the Museum Vendor Table.
As mentioned elsewhere in this issue, the museum is bringing its new Mola Exhibit to the Museum Exhibit
Room at the reunion. The Museum will also have its
very popular Silent Auction. Each year the Silent Auction draws in many to bid on the unique Panama Canal items donated for this fund raising effort.
The museum is going to sponsor two new initiatives at the reunion; the recording of oral histories will be conducted by Richard Morgan and ,Jim DesLondes who will show slide presentations developed for Panama Canal Cruises.
The Balboa High School Bust of Vasco Nunez de Balboa will be on display again to allow many more BHS grads to get their photographs which has been the rage in past reunions.
Roosevelt Medal Recipient Certificates will be available again. Over 640 of these certificates have been issued to descendents of Roosevelt Medal Holders.
For the sixth year, the museum will have its expanded table in the
Vendors’ Room. The full stock from the Museum’s Gift Store will be available. This includes a large variety of Panama and Panama Canal related items, with the newest items being a fourth in the series of commemorative Chritmas ornaments, which this year features the Panama Railroad; the new Panama Canal Museum Cookbook, bottle caddies with the museum’s mola logo, new Tervis Tumblers and the wide selection of books and publications.
The museum is working on a surprise feature this year that should prove a popular attraction for all.

Bits from the Board of Trustees
New Officers- At the April 29 Board of Trustees meeting, a new slate of officers was elected upon the conclusion of the previous terms of office. The new officers are: • Joe Wood, President • Pat Steiner Kearns, Vice President Kathy Egolf, Executive Vice President The board named Chuck Hummer, President Emeritus. Gerry DeTore was named to chair the Buildings and Facilities Committee, and his main focus is to lead the building search initiative as the present lease in Seminole expires in 2006. Trustees Lesley Hendricks and Barbara Green
submitted their resignations from the board. Lesley will continue to be the lead in responding to inquiries to the museum and the Store Committee. Young Members Filling the Gap- A wave of new young volunteers has come forward to assist the museum on the board and on major projects. J. Patrick Coffey is the newest trustee named to the board, where his expertise in Information Technology will be a major skill set addition to the museum. Patrick joins, Joey Zornes, who has upgraded the museum website and contributed to the design of the new cookbook. Zornes was appointed chair of a new Marketing
and Public Communications Committee. Others coming forward are Shawn Rupp, whose company, Prudential Real Estate, has been named exclusive agent in the search for new property and Rob Thrift who has volunteered to develop a Wills and Bequests Program for the museum and made a presentation to the board. Jason Ohman is heading up an ambitious project to develop a proposal to digitize some of the rarer publications in the museum collection, such as the Canal Records and Canal Reviews. Members of the Board of Trustees met with Rich Wainio, the new Port Director for the Port of Tampa to investigate possible collaborative efforts. Dr. Karen White, Dean of the USF St. Petersburg Campus and her assistant Dr. Mark Durand, visited the museum for a tour and discussions on possible collaborative opportunities with USF, such as internships and other educational initiatives. Museum Trustees John Carlson and Chris Skeie are busy representing the museum in Panama. Volunteer Karen Saum and the two trustees met with representatives of the Friends of the Afro Antillean Museum of Panama to
(Continued from page 3) develop a collaborative grant program and a membership reciprocity arrangement with their museum. Other efforts in Panama include a collaborative exhibit for the City of Colon, and another with the Panamanian National Institute of Culture, the Panama Canal Railway Company and the Panama Canal Authority. The museum continues to respond to research requests with 30 requests received in 2005 and there were 10 offsite presentations by the museum. The three museum representatives joined President Chuck Hummer at a formal honors presentation by Panama Mayor, Juan Carlos Navarro, to Hummer and the
Message from the President Emeritus
As I prepare this message, I find myself continually amazed at the dedication, loyalty and hard work of our museum’s volunteers. At this writing, these remarkable folks have just completed putting the finishing touches on a very exciting Mola Exhibit and hosted a Grand Opening of the exhibit at the museum on April 29. While one group was creating the Mola exhibit, other dedicated volunteers were gathering memorabilia, artifacts and other historically significant items to begin assembling our main Annual Reunion exhibit, with this year’s theme being, “The 150th Anniversary of the Panama Railroad, 1855-2005."
In addition to the diligent work of these individuals in preparing our exhibits, other of our steady volunteers were involved in creating a brand new cookbook filled with recipes from Panama and the Canal Zone. Many hands went into the design, artwork, researching the historical references, gathering the recipes and printing this delightful publication. The end result is a unique perspective of life in Panama and the Canal Zone as viewed through the recipes of those who enjoyed them.
So, as we have seen over the past six years of our existence, a tremendous amount of effort by some rather extraordinary people have kept the museum going and continually growing. The common thread among all of these committed volunteers is the desire to continue to preserve their heritage and the history of the American Era of the Panama Canal. There are so many ways in which each of you could be a part of this enterprise. Of course, we always appreciate your donations, but if you have a special skill, an idea for a new product for our gift store, a talent for building exhibits, or other creative talents, we welcome you to join this effort. I guarantee that you, too, will be amazed by the wonderful camaraderie and fellowship that exists within this special group of people.
This will mark the end of my term as president of the museum. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the team that comprise your board of trustees. In particular, Kathy Egolf, who spends almost full time on museum business, Paul Glassburn is not only our treasurer, but he has taken over many of the duties of the Collections Committee as Buddy Morgan went back to full time teaching. Finally, Joe Wood bears special mention for his farsightedness in helping to found the museum and his commitment ever since in keeping the museum alive and growing. As my health declined, Joe took over most of the duties of president over the past year, letting me do as much as I could, but insuring that the museum had the leadership it required. I am so pleased to see more younger trustees join the board and contribute some fresh ideas and technological and marketing skills.
I continue to ask each of you to recruit new members for our museum, and help us carry it into larger more accessible quarters when our current lease expires in 2006.

museum for their work in preserving the history of both communities. 2006 Cruise- Kathy Egolf announced that the museum will again sponsor a cruise. The successful cruises in 2004 and 2005, have confirmed that cruises are a popular and effective fund raiser for the museum. On the basis of questionnaires from previous cruises, the June 2006 cruise will be an Alaskan Cruise. Schedules and pricing will be available at the reunion and are included in the package of this issue of the Review.

Page 5 The Panama Canal Museum Review
Joe was born in Panama and lived most of his life in that country. He attended Canal Zone Schools and graduated from Balboa High School in 1955. After two years at the Canal Zone Junior College, he transferred to the University of Florida where he received a degree in Business Administration in 1959 and became a lifelong “Florida Gator.” After a year of graduate school at UF and a tour of duty in the US Army, he returned to the Canal Zone to begin a successful career with the Panama Canal Company that would last 33 years.
Joe says, “There is no way to describe how lucky I was to have worked for the Canal organization. My bosses were all great, as were the benefits, working conditions and life in the Canal Zone generally. I languished in a mid-level position until 1971 when my terrific and dynamic wife, Bev Bowman (BHS ‘61) came into my life. With her love and support I was able to advance through the organization, where I wound up my career as a member of the Canal’s Senior Management team as Director, Office of Executive Administration. The US-Panama Treaties beginning in 1979 provided for a 20-year transition period prior to the transfer of the Canal to Panama. During that time, all of us who lived there experienced some extraordinarily difficult challenges, including civil disturbances, nationwide strikes, Noriega and the US invasion in 1989. After the invasion I was appointed to serve as the Canal’s Deputy Administrator for Administration for nine months while awaiting the appointment by the US President of a permanent Administrator and Deputy Administrator.”
Upon his retirement from the Panama Canal Commission in 1993, Joe and his family moved to Tallahassee, Florida, which, he says, “is a terrific town and we feel very much at home with many friends, both old and new, living in the area. It was from here that I answered Chuck Hummer’s invitation in 1998 to become one of the founders of the Panama Canal Museum. With former Balboa High School Classmates, Bob Zumbado, Paul Glassburn, Reggie Hayden, Pat (Steiner) Kearns, Marie (Wright) Gibson, Chuck and I on the museum’s Board of Trustees, the Class of 1955 is well represented and, along with other super volunteers of all ages, we have achieved a modicum of success toward preserving the great tradition and history of our lives in the Canal Zone and Panama. I feel truly blessed to be involved with so many dedicated and hard working individuals in such a satisfying and rewarding project.”
Board Profile—Joseph J. “Joe” Wood, President
MOLAS AND THE AMERICAN ERA IN PANAMA
Cheryl Russell and the museum staff have organized a special exhibit featuring the ubiquitous Kuna Indian molas and the effect of the American Era on these unique local craft items. The exhibit was opened at the museum on April 29th as a special feature. Many of the molas were loaned to the museum for this exhibit from numer-ous former Zonians. The exhibit has proved so successful that it is being brought to the annual Panama Canal Reunion in addition to the railroad exhibit.
During the time the mola exhibit is showing at the museum, the museum has molas for sale, the pro-ceeds from which will go to the Kuna Education Fund set up by Dr. and
Jane Gruver. The Gruvers provided the molas to augment the exhibit and give a special emphasis to the educa-tional fund. They are famous for their work with the Kunas for many years. More than a dozen young Kunas have received scholarships to US universi-ties from this fund.

THE PANAMA CANAL MUSEUM MISSION The mission of the Panama Canal Museum is to preserve the history of the American era of the Panama Canal (1904-1999). The museum collects artifacts, documents and other items of historical importance and interest, which are accessible in person and on the Internet. Its purpose is to enable research and education in the history of the accomplishments of the United States of America in the construction, operation, maintenance and defense of the Panama Canal as a service to the World’s maritime and naval communities in the twentieth century. It also collects, documents, catalogs, preserves, stores, exhibits, interprets and enables research on a variety of items illustrative of the lives and work of the Panam Canal workforce and supporting communities. It is intended to be of particular interest to former residents of the Canal Zone and their descendants as well as students, scholars, genealogists, and others who have an interest in this unique achievement. The emphasis is on memorializing the contributions of individuals, families and organizations of the United States, as well as those of the French, West Indians, Panamanians and others who helped to create and operate the Panama Canal.
