Welcome to The PaperCut!By this time of year, I think everyone is ready to celebrate Spring. The coming of chocolate bunny filled baskets and colorful blooms makes the world smile. This month at GCD we have something else to celebrate… the launch our new Online Magazine, The PaperCut. We've spent a month getting it's pages ready for you to look at and each project was created with time and love. As you look through each page and each project, we hope it enlightens a craftier glow within you.

This month there are too many projects to pick a favorite, but make sure to check out our new challenge called The Flip-It Sketch Challenge. Starting next month we will be doing give aways to those that play along. We at GCD are quite excited about this fresh take on a sketch challenge and hope you play along. Enjoy this issue and please do share your feedback. We would love to know what you think.

To inspire you just a little more each month, we will share what inspires the GCD Studios Gals. Each month we’ll pick a picture and show how you can pull inspiration from it, allowing you to think up dreamy new techniques and delicious handmade embellishment. Grow Layout by Elizabeth CarneyI’ve been feeling nostalgic as of late. My great-grandmother whom we called “Mom” loved roses. I never really did like them myself. That was of course until we moved on base here in Washington with a home that had not one, but three roses bushes. They were very beautiful and hearty too. I loved taking care of those roses and realized how much they reminded me of Mom and how she tended and cared for her beloved roses. What also reminds me of Mom is the cute Oh Happy Day Collection. Born was this layout from those memories, ah wonderful memories!

To texture: I took a small grade sandpaper and applied to the flower edges to give them a more weathered look. For the texture look on the letters, I used a Pounce Wheel tool and went around the outside of the letters to give them more depth. I also used a heavy grade sandpaper on the letters by actually sanding those for a rough edged texture effect.

PHOTO TECHNIQUE

Birthday Fun Layout by Leslie DavisYou can see from the photo, I added depth to the banner by adhering one side and then squishing the other side closer before I adhered it to make it ruche up a little. I used an acrylic stamp for the word “birthday”. I was able to bend it slightly on a clear mounting block to follow the curve of the banner. I wanted to include her other friends in the layout as well, but wanted to keep the layout uncluttered and on one page, so I created little flaps with the sticker tabs.

I stitched along the edge of the photo for extra support of the tab and the hinging action. :) When my daughter saw the layout she was kind of upset her other friends weren’t included. Once I showed her the photos flipped to show her other friends, she loved it! I hope you enjoyed today’s post and maybe you’ll be saying “bonjour” to flipping photos on your pages!

Spread Your Wings & Fly Layout by Christie DavisWhen I was challenged to do some sewing on a layout, I was a little stumped at first because I am not a seamstress. But I loved the look of a patchwork quilt type background of assorted papers, and thought I would make some fun stitches by hand to accent and connect the paper blocks together this way. The new Bonjour line has such pretty earthy colors and was perfect for this.

I added some twine for butterfly antennae and used a shiny mist to create the misted background. I love how the butterflies and flowers in this line are so easy to cut out and use separately as embellishments!

Quick Tip:Create cute and simple antennae by pinching twine in half and adhering to your butterfly.

When your crafty mojo is stuck and you're looking for a way to spark your creativity, try this new reaoccuring feature challenge. Use this sketch as insiration or flip it on it's side, either way it'll get the creative thought process rolling.

When Leslie flipped the sketch on it's side the banner reminded her of the sun which was perfect for these great beach photos.

TRENDY TRICKS

Painted Circle Technique by Teri AndersonHi all! One of the things I loved doing when I paper craft is to mix my scrapbook supplies with items I can find in my home. Today, I am going to show you a fun way to make circles with paper from GCD Studios’ Splendor collection, paint and a small glass!

1. Start by squirting some paint on an old tray (or plate) or scratch paper.

2. Set the rim of a glass in the paint. Twist the glass to make sure the rim is fully covered with paint.

3. Press the rim onto your patterned paper.

4. Be sure to press hard so you get a nice painted circle.

5. When finished, cut your circle out and use it as a design element on your next paper crafting project!

All of the circles on this card were made with my painted circle technique. Rather than cutting them with scissors, I was able to use a circle punch.

To give the yellow and blue ones more visual interest, I set a wooden button in the middle of the circles. I then covered the top of each button with additional paper from the Splendor collection.

Supplies: A small drinking glass (a,votive cup or some other object with a circle ring works well, too!), Craft paint, Patterned paper from GCD Studios (of course!), and scratch paper.

We love Spring and seeing flowers bloom lifts Tessa's spirits and helps her to shake off those winter blues. She recently photographed these pretty flowers in her neighborhood. Well, a page about flowers deserves a special flower embellishment, so she made a unique blossom out of dovetail/pennant shapes. The result is a fun, unique flower! Enjoy your Spring – get out there, take some photos of the blooming flowers, and scrap away!

Spring Flowers by Tessa BuysTo recreate one of your own, hand-cut your own dovetail/pennant shapes. In addition, you will need a 2 inch cardstock circle for the base and glue. Begin by cutting out about 20 pennants.

1. Add a ring of glue around the edge of your circle.

2. Begin sticking the pennants to the circle, overlapping just a touch.

3. Add another ring of glue to the center of the circle and begin layering more pennants in a second row.

4. Add a button, brad, or rhinestone in the middle of the flower.

5. For an added something special, cut denim leaves to match.

Advanced Tips

1. For more dimension, you can curl the tips of the Dovetails/pennants before gluing them down.

2. For more variety, you could use multiple patterned papers for your pennants.

A CLOSER LOOK

This cute little box, originally covered with a butterfly pattern, was found at a local craft store. Removing the leather straps and decoupaging on this beautiful houndstooth paper in the Splendor collection made it more vintage chic. Adding on metal legs and gluing the leather straps back on gave it the finishing look.

This mini album was created using the Splendor and Oh Happy Day collections. Layered tags, buttons, and flowers give it a charming look. It's soft colors fit perfectly into spring.

Sweet Life Layoutby Jennifer Chapin

Sunburst patterns are so hot right now! And it’s a great way to use up that stash of patterned paper you have been collecting for awhile. Just use your trimmer to cut long triangular pieces and adhere them to your layout in the pattern shown. You can even stitch the edges for added definition and texture.

This technique takes a bit of time, but I really think it is SO worth it once you see the end result! I hope you’ll try it soon.

1. Place your photo where you would like it on your paper or cardstock. Draw a border around the outside in pencil to mark where the sunburst pieces will end.

2. Mark the center of your photo. This will be where the sunburst pieces meet.

3. Use your paper trimmer to cut long triangular pieces of patterned paper.

4. Arrange the patterned paper with the points meeting in the middle.

5. Adhere and sew the edges to add texture and visual interest.

6. Place your photo back on the layout using foam adhesive to adhere.
