EDITOR'S PICK, 08 HSTUDIO NOTES

Hello my crafty friends!I can't believe we're already on our 3rd issue! My goal as the DT

Coordinator is to bring fresh new ideas through the team and

then pass them to you. This month our focus is crafting with lace,

vellum, and color in fun new ways. Whether you're a new or a

well-seasoned scrapper, these ideas will get those crafty hands

motivated. Also, be sure to check out all the fun over on the

blog. This month we'll be celebrating Father's Day, the Bonjour

collection (which is the focus of the cover this month), triangles,

and die-cuts. Remember, if you try any of these ideas we would

love to see them.

I feel the month of June is a busy because of summer, the kids

being out of school, and celebrating Father's Day. It sure does

keep us active in the Sonboul home. Just about everyone I have

talked to over this last month has travel plans or is trying to find

things the kids can do on their break. That got me thinking… our

focus for next month's issue will be on kids. Make sure to check out

all the projects, because you're going to love them! So over all,

Happy Father's Day and Summer. Enjoy this time with the family

and make sure to take pictures of it all.

I love looking for inspiration in everyday things I see. This photo grabbed my attention right away and I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I created this layout using the Bonjour collection. What I love about this collection is that it is full of gorgeous flowery patterns… just perfect. I love to fussy cut, so right away I started cutting out some of the flower patterns. Because the photo had a bouquet of flowers in it, I decided to make my own grouping of flowers tied off with ribbon, just like the photo. For some added touches I cut the doily frame, leaves, and gate using my die-cutting machine and then added some pearls and brads for a final touch.

Simple techniques using vellum to create beautiful, dimensional designs.


FIFTEENby Heidi Sonboul

Laying vellum over pattern paper gives a whole new soft look to a piece of paper. Wanting to do something special with my title, I decided to send my vellum through my Cricut. Using the scraps as a whole (like I did for the title Fifteen) gives a soft and pretty look. I discovered cutting too small will cause the vellum to rip, so make sure the font and pattern size allows the blade to move around.

The beautiful thing about vellum is that is has the wonderful ability to soften up bolder and busier patterned papers. This allows you to easily mix lots of different patterned papers together.

First, take a look at my Floral Hi card. Take a close look at you'll see there are six different patterned papers on it! Yes, really. The secret lies under the vellum. I put four additional strips of paper there and then covered it slightly with the vellum.

Now, take a look at this Smile card. Here I took three different patterned papers, cut them in to half circles and circle and then covered them with vellum.

Then I added more patterned paper to my card.I used a total of five in fact, but it sure doesn't look like it. The secret? Vellum!

THE SKY IS THE LIMIT

I love the look of die-cut vellum, but sometimes I just don't see enough contrast between the vellum and my background. I came up with this quick and easy technique to help your vellum shapes pop.

1. First die-cut your vellum.

2. Lightly ink the edges of the vellum. For this card I wanted the definition to be subtle, so I used an ink the same color as my vellum, but for a bolder edge try using a darker color.

3. Use a cloth or paper towel to blend the ink.

4. Apply a vellum friendly adhesive to the back of your die-cut. I used Xyron adhesive, the even coat of adhesive is nearly invisible on vellum.

5. Affix you vellum to your project. The edges are just a little defined while the center remains translucent.

FATHER'S DAYCOUPONS &WALLET GIFT

CARD HOLDER


Click here to download the template.Every year we try and think of something

special to do for the Father's in our lives. I knew

I wanted to do a coupon book and something

crafty with a wallet. Then while discussing the

cover Heather Tozzi (creator of Splendor) said

"We should put the coupons in the wallet" and

it was in that moment we were on to something

amazingly crafty. We both got to work and

came up with this adorable wallet packed with

coupons.

I think the pocket watch defines men in the early

1900's. This particular pocket watch was my Great

Grandfather's who once upon a time worked on

railroads, cool right?! Anyway, with everything in

place we were ready to photograph it all. Looking

at it all together, you can see a strong masculine

feel to the cover. Which is a nice tribute to the

men in our lives.

The wallet and coupons template have been

created in a ready-to-use PDF. Simply type in

the coupon windows and print. You can add

stitching to jazz up the look of the wallet or

just stick to simple glue and paper. I had my

boys help pick the coupon services – there is

even one that says "Brush your teeth". Calvin

was pretty excited about it and I think that

Mr. Sonboul will get a good laugh from it. This

project will get the kids involved by doing kind

things for Daddy and Grandpa and cost almost

nothing. It will be a gift to cherish. We hope you

try it and that it is a big hit!


1. Print and cut out the templates.

2. Use the templates to cut out patterned paper of choice.

Score and fold where necessary.

3. Sew or glue Wallet Outside to Wallet Inside. Make sure that

all edges are aligned and you only sew or glue around 3

edges leaving the top edge open.

* If you would like stitching around all edges of the wallet,

be sure to run a stitch along the edge that will be open

before attaching the Wallet Inside.

4. Next, align Card Pockets 1-4 from largest in back to

smallest in front. Sew or glue the bottom, left, and right

edges together making sure to leave the top edges open.

5. Mount the finished Card Pocket to the inside right side of

the wallet.

6. Fold the License Holder in half. If you are adding stitching

details, sew the License Holder closed leaving one edge

open to insert the license. Then, with the window facing

up, adhere it to the inside left side of the wallet. The

opening where the license goes should be toward the

center of the wallet.

7. To build the Wallet Photo Holder, first decide how many

wallet photos you'd like to include. Then cut as many

Additional Cards as you have photos, less one for the

Wallet Photo Holder Base. Adhere photos and embellish as

desired.

8. Sew or glue the Additional Cards to the Wallet Photo

Holder Base along the top edge and/or fold line making

sure to align the bottom edges. The Wallet Photo Holder

Base should be the base layer.

9. Adhere the flap of the Wallet Photo Holder to the inside

center of the wallet.

10. Stuff the wallet full of coupons and surprise Dad!

Four inventive techniques that will make you fall in love with lace all over again.

#1 Layered Lace

For my layered lace effect, I used my die-cutting machine to cut a few strips of lacy border from cream colored cardstock. I layered the borders and added the accent to my page for a sweet effect. Even though this layout is about my daughter and her great-grandfather, I still wanted it to have a soft feel. The Splendor collection papers were perfect with these photos too!

SummerHighlights

I love the lacy look of the Martha Stewart around the page punches. For the base of my layout I used the Labels & Tags pattern paper from the Splendor collection, punched all around the edges, and then inked it. I used a border punch to frame my photo and circle punches to frame my flowers. I also used several small punches to get some delicate shapes. To create the flower embellishment I used a heart squeeze punch to create the petals, curled the edges with a stylist, and layered the petals by overlapping the edges.

#2 Punched Lace


Soft & Sweetby Tegan Skwiat

Altering lace paper is my new favorite technique! Here, I used a neutral paper and die-cut the large floral frame using my Silhouette Cameo and then colored the lace using Copic markers. Then I added a few pearl gems and buttons and, voila! It makes a pretty neat frame! I love how the colors give the layout a soft and muted tone.

To make the lace flower start by crumpling up your first doily, flatten and then smush the middle together. Glue in place. Next, cut into the middle of the 2nd doily and cut out a circle. It doesn't need to be perfect. Pleat into a circle and glue down. Then cut into the middle of the 3rd doily and this time, cut out a larger circle. Then pleat into a smaller circle than doily #2. Now add an embellishment in the middle of the flower. It can be a button, smaller flower… it's up to you.

Frame Technique

1. Cut a 5.5" x 5.5" card from cardstock (11" x 5.5" flat).

2. Use the Spellbinders Grand Labels One to cut out the frame. Use the large size to fit your card and the next size down and cut together.

3. Use watercolor paints and paint the frame you just cut out.

4. Again, use the large size Grand Labels One to cut out the background, adhere to card.

5. After your frame is dry adhere to card over your background.

6. Get a sheet of Emily Rose from the Oh Happy Day collection and cut out the flowers.

7. Adhere the flowers around your frame.

8. Stamp sentiment of your choice to card.

I LOVE the boldness that the color of red gives off, it's confidence and loudness speak volumes. I love how pages with red just seem to jump right out at you. For this layout, I used several different GCD lines, pulling out all the reds and pinks that worked together. I mixed and matches lines, patterns and shades of red to create this layout. The one thing that got me inspired were the red highlights in my hair in the photo, from there red just seemed like a perfect choice for the page.

Yellow it just happens to be my favorite color! It reminds me of sunshine on a bright and cheery day! Using almost every shade, texture, and paper that I could in the newest GCD Studios collections, I created this! I kept this very simple so that the shades, textures, and colors of each paper could actually be the focal point of my layout. I really enjoyed using all this yellow paper!!!!!

GREENby Emily Branch

Green is the color of summer! The plants are lush and vivid with it. The intensity of green makes me feel alive and festive! Today I am going to show you how it's possible to create cool cards using only one color. First, trim strips of patterned paper and smaller strips of cardstock to fit and suit your card. Next, arrange the strips of patterned paper at a diagonal. Adhere to cardstock and trim edges so they're flush. Place new cardstock strips next to previous to help place the first patterned paper strip. Continue the process until you're finished.

BLUEby Heidi Sonboul

Navy Blue seems to be a hot trend. I'm so lucky to have two boys, it makes it so much more easier to use! I'm a big believer in layers and to help them stand out I inked all their sides. For this layout I stuck to all blue pattern papers and inks. There are many shades of blue, so make sure that they complement each other before you craft - sometimes they can clash. I used light blues with a touch a dark blue, this give it a nice balance.

Use It.

Using the sketch as-is made it easy to use vertical photos with just a little cropping. Adding in washi tape and snipping the ends to arrow tips draws your eye to the main focal photo.


Flower Child & Bonjour Collections.

Flip It.

Pam flipped the sketch on its side for her layout and focused on color by pulling bright spring colors from the photos and pattern papers. To bring focus to the title I switched it with my journaling so that my title is at the top of my layout.

Alter It.

I decided I wanted to use large photos for this sketch so that you can see more of the details in the pictures themselves, so I opted to change this one page sketch to a double pager. I kept the layout pretty much the same, but added another column for another photo. I also switched where the title and journaling went and added the journaling under the main photo.

To accent the main photo, I machine stitched on the photo itself, creating a border on the inside. The accents I cut on my Cricut from some free cutting files I found on the internet. I created some "tendrils" by cutting very very thin strips of paper, wetting them, and curling them around a pencil to give them some shape. Once dry, they retain the curled shape.

Using the Oh Happy Days papers, I focused on using papers that have the blue/green/orange colors in them. To make sure that the eye goes to the title first, I used black letters on a yellow background. Although this is not a holiday themed page, I used a gingerbread man punch because it reminds me of my man being that he's bald too. LOL.

The papers in the 'Oh Happy Day' collection were perfect for this layout, as they were colorful and fresh. For the layout, I stitched a grid pattern on top of the patterned paper and left the ends of the thread loose and long for another subtle, yet cool effect. Another fun design element is using multiple prints of the same photo in black and white, and one in color for emphasis.
