TODAYS WORD EXODUS 22:20 As we conclude Octobers theme of Respect Life, we in the United States must face the issue of our treat- ment of immigrants. Ignoring the po- litical rhetoric, we turn to our faith sources to get our guidance on this matter, including the Bible (cf: Ex. 22:20), The Catholic Catechism, our Catholic Social Teachings, and our Bishops who have spoken out on this issue time and time again. The Catholic Catechism instructs the faithful that good government has two duties, both of which must be carried out and neither of which can be ignored. The first duty is to wel- come the foreigner out of charity and respect for the human person. Persons have the right to immigrate and thus government must accommodate this right to the greatest extent possible, especially financially blessed nations: "More prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to wel- come the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protec- tion of those who receive him." Cath- olic Catechism, 2241. The second duty is to secure ones border and enforce the law for the sake of the common good. Sover- eign nations have the right to enforce their laws and all persons must re- spect the legitimate exercise of this right: "Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immi- grants' duties toward their country of adoption. Immigrants are obliged to respect the material and spiritual her- itage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens." Catholic Cat- echism, 2241. As early as January 2003, the U.S. Catholic Bishops released a pas- toral letter on migration entitled, "Strangers No Longer: Together on the Journey of Hope." They stressed that, "when persons cannot find em- ployment in their country of origin to support themselves and their families, they have a right to find work else- where in order to survive. Sovereign nations should provide ways to ac- commodate this right." No. 35. Love and care of family has no boundaries. God urges great pro- tection by people of faith on the widow and the orphan since they were such a vul- nerable group in society. God tells us that He will stand up for them to ensure justice for them. Further- more, God calls all of us faith-filled people to care for the alien or immigrant in our midst — hospitality in- cluded food, shelter, and protection from any injus- tice. The Word of God dic- tates that one must not mis- treat nor oppress an immi- grant for their protector will be God who will hold it against us. TODAY’S WORD EXODUS 22:20

As we conclude October’s theme of Respect Life, we in the United States must face the issue of our treat-ment of immigrants. Ignoring the po-litical rhetoric, we turn to our faith sources to get our guidance on this matter, including the Bible (cf: Ex. 22:20), The Catholic Catechism, our Catholic Social Teachings, and our Bishops who have spoken out on this issue time and time again. The Catholic Catechism instructs the faithful that good government has two duties, both of which must be carried out and neither of which can be ignored. The first duty is to wel-come the foreigner out of charity and respect for the human person. Persons have the right to immigrate and thus government must accommodate this right to the greatest extent possible, especially financially blessed nations: "More prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to wel-come the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected

that places a guest under the protec-tion of those who receive him." Cath-olic Catechism, 2241. The second duty is to secure one’s border and enforce the law for the sake of the common good. Sover-eign nations have the right to enforce their laws and all persons must re-spect the legitimate exercise of this right: "Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immi-grants' duties toward their country of adoption. Immigrants are obliged to respect the material and spiritual her-itage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens." Catholic Cat-echism, 2241. As early as January 2003, the U.S. Catholic Bishops released a pas-toral letter on migration entitled, "Strangers No Longer: Together on the Journey of Hope." They stressed that, "when persons cannot find em-ployment in their country of origin to support themselves and their families, they have a right to find work else-where in order to survive. Sovereign nations should provide ways to ac-commodate this right." No. 35. Love and care of family has no boundaries.

God urges great pro-tection by people of faith on the widow and the orphan since they were such a vul-nerable group in society. God tells us that He will stand up for them to ensure justice for them. Further-more, God calls all of us faith-filled people to care for the alien or immigrant in our midst — hospitality in-cluded food, shelter, and protection from any injus-tice.
