Welcome from Revd Mike Taylor
Dear friends,
It seems odd to be writing something
for the New Year several weeks
before Christmas, but such are
deadlines! So I guess the question is
‘Was your Christmas a good one?’.
Did you have time to celebrate with
family or were you
working through
much of it? Did
you over spend
and over eat? Will
January now be
filled with good
intentions for
2019? What makes it strange to write
now is that I am writing into the future
with no idea of what I will be doing let
alone you! Isn’t that part of the worries
of today? The future is so uncertain?
What will happen in March with Brexit,
assuming it is still happening, as after
I have written this Parliament will be
voting on the proposed Brexit bill and
all our speculation may have given rise
to further uncertainty or we will be
facing another referendum or even an
election! If so much hangs, and can so
easily change, on a debate and vote
taken on one day before Christmas how
can we possibly plan for the future?
I have been increasingly aware of the
fragile nature of our world and its
structures and more inclined to read
my bible and spend time with God who
knows the future. The prophet Jeremiah
(29:11) said about the future 11 For I
know the plans I have for you,” declares
the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not
to harm you, plans to give you hope
and a future. Not to take something
out of context as this was about the
restoration of the nation of Israel after
the rise and fall of empires all around
them and their capture by Babylon!
I think this can also be a timeless
message for all
who put their
trust in God that
he does have a
plan and purpose
for us. We may
not know what it
is but it is there. It
involves putting our trust in Him rather
than in the world! That doesn’t sound so
bad as you look at the world at present.
Maybe it is if you do not have faith in
God; or maybe this is a time to think
about whether or not there might just
be a larger plan than the one politicians
make for us! What if there is something
supernatural where there are plans
that not even Parliament knows
anything about?
The future is so uncertain? What
will happen in March with Brexit
I have been increasingly aware
of the fragile nature of our world and its structures and more inclined to read my bible and spend time with God who knows the future.

From the Registers
We offer our deepest sympathy to the friends and family of Dawn Prior whose
cremation and memorial service was held at St Johns Church in Hinton
Charterhouse on 22nd November.
We also offer our sincere condolences to the friends and family of Julia Thomas
whose ashes were buried at St Mary’s Church, Limpley Stoke on 27th November.
Correction: In the last edition of the Parish magazine in the record of the burial of the ashes of Marion Page we offered our sympathies to Canon Page, who had died several years earlier. Sincere apologies for the upset caused by this error.
(Note: Register items published in this Magazine include events up to 6th December 2018,
which is when this Magazine edition was compiled. Events after this date will be published
in the next edition.)
Maybe part of your new search in the
New Year would be to find out for
yourself. Don’t just accept what others
are saying, find out for yourself.
Maybe you will be surprised.
Have a good New Year and may God
be our guide as individuals and as a
nation in 2019.
Have a Happy New Year.

Y O U R P A R I S H M A G A Z I N E
Dear reader,
I hope you enjoy and value your Parish Magazine.
It is an important part of our life in the parish, focused on the church. It draws
us together, informing and entertaining us, and ensures everyone feels part of
the community, knows what is going on, and can join in.
However it is expensive to produce. It is written, managed and distributed by
volunteers, but the time and resources spent editing it, creating the artwork
and printing enough copies to go to every home for free in the three villages
adds up to £1.20 a copy including the advertising, and has to be paid for.
Please help fund this valuable asset to community life. Your contribution,
no matter how large or small, will help ensure the survival of your
Parish Magazine.
Please make your contribution (as a one-off or preferably a Standing Order) to:
Sort code: 40-09-19 Account number: 01048406
Thank you so much. Without your help we wouldn’t be able to keep
The Parish Magazine going.

Forty Years Ago this Month - January 1979
LEN LAMBERT
Len Lambert recalls the events he recorded in his diary for this month:
• The New Year opened with severe frosts, the temperature dropping to 10° F
overnight, the coldest since 1963 and the Met Office predicting no sign of a
break in the severe winter’s grip
• The Pools Panel sat for the second time in the season as only five games
were possible
• Lorry drivers go on strike on 5th causing new shortages of heating oil and
fresh food
• On 10th The Sun newspaper headline is ‘Crisis? What Crisis?’ as Prime Minister
Jim Callaghan denies that the country is in chaos
• Rail workers begin a 24 hour strike on 15th
• On 16th the landmark nature series ‘Life on Earth’ presented by David
Attenborough is first shown on BBC1
• On 22nd tens of thousands of public-workers come out on strike in the
beginning of what becomes known as the Winter of Discontent
• Later that night 8 inches of snow falls blanketing the south of the country,
and black ice causes traffic chaos to add to the country’s problems
• At least England’s Cricketers were in the sun, all out for 169, versus Australia
with Botham making 72.
Have you seen the Sun rise
Lighting up the land
This is the work, or so we’re told
Of God’s almighty hand
Have you felt the gentle breeze
Blow softly on your cheek
Disturbing dust and debris
That’s gathered in the street
Have you felt the rain drop
From a passing shower
Seen lightning heard the thunder
Displaying nature’s power
Have you seen the moon rise
Begin its journey through the stars
Sometimes joined by Venus
Jupiter and Mars
Soon the sun will show its face
And do it all again
But then again who can tell
It simply just might rain.

15th Bath (Freshford) Scouts
“I’m bored.”
“There’s nothing to do.”
“I haven’t got anyone to play with.”
Many of us who are parents or
spend time with young people
are familiar with these anguished cries.
Never more so than during the
school holidays!
This is where the scouting movement
can help! Our weekly meetings offer
challenging, educational and fun
activities to help our Beavers, Cubs
and Scouts (girls and boys aged 6-14)
develop and reach their full potential.
By also inspiring curiosity and building
new skills, we encourage youngsters to
become more resourceful and able to
spend their time productively. This may
mean pursuing new interests, becoming
more competent in activities they enjoy,
or finding ways to contribute to the
local community.
You may be surprised by the wide
range of pursuits we have enjoyed
even since our update
in last month’s Parish
magazine. Our Scouts
have been honing their culinary skills as
they prepare to cook Christmas dinner
and earn their chef’s badge. They also
put their navigation skills to the test
by undertaking their first night hike
from Marshfield to Bathampton. Our
Beavers and Cubs have been climbing,
ice skating, catapult making, and
pioneering (working on lashings).
It’s wonderful to see them learn and
grow through the adventures they
experience in scouting.
If you, or a young person you know,
is up for new adventures, please get
in touch. We are particularly keen to
attract Scouts (10.5-14 year olds). We
can’t guarantee that you’ll never hear
the words “I’m bored” again, but you
may hear them less frequently!
Yours in scouting,
Sam

The Royal British Legion Freshford BranchCHRIS OSBORNE Membership Secretary (01225 867566)
T he Branch was most appreciative
of the attendances at the Churches
and War Memorial Services on Sunday
11th November commemorating the
passing of one hundred years since
the Armistice of 1918. Wreaths were
laid at the Tyning Memorial, which has
recently been given a much needed
enhancement, and at the Memorial in
Limpley Stoke, which also has received
attention. Financial assistance from
both Parish Councils has been most
welcome and help has also been
received from FLiSCA.
Our Annual General Meeting was held
on 1st November at the Freshford Inn
in the presence of a good number
of members and a large number of
visitors. There was an excellent talk by
one of our newest members, Anthony
Gennard, who spoke about Camp
Bastion and the problems that arose
during his time dealing with the trials
that occurred
when our
military
prepares to
come home.
We look
forward to
further talks
in the coming
year, especially as they are always
informative, and are a very good way of
promoting the Branch.
We finished the year on a sad note
with the death on 13th November of
one of our members. Philip Green was
in his early nineties and had been a
Branch member for over twenty five
years. Recently widowed, Philip had
been a most regular attendee at our
meetings and had been a willing hand
at our annual Summer parties and most
recently he had taken the collection at
St Peter’s at the Armistice Service on
11th November. He will be missed by
the Branch.
The next Branch meeting is yet to be
arranged but most probably will be
a lunchtime one in the first week of
February 2019 at The Inn at Freshford.

NICOLA TALLIS:
Elizabeth’s Rival- The Tumultuous Tale of Lettice Knollys
WEDNESDAY 23RD JANUARY 2019
7.30PM
FRESHFORD VILLAGE MEMORIAL HALL
MEMBERS FREE | VISITORS £2.00 | EVERYONE WELCOME
Nicola Tallis will discuss her latest book
‘Queen Elizabeth’s Rival’ which will be
on sale at the meeting. A kinswoman to
Elizabeth I, Lettice Knollys had begun
the Queen’s glittering reign basking in
favour and success. It was an honour
that she would enjoy for two decades.
However, on the morning of September
21st, 1578, Lettice made a fateful
decision. When the Queen learned
of it, the consequences were swift.
Lettice had dared to marry without
the Queen’s consent. But worse, her
new husband was Robert Dudley, Earl
of Leicester, the Queen’s favourite and
one-time suitor.
Though she would not marry him
herself, Elizabeth was fiercely jealous
of any woman who showed an interest
in Leicester. Knowing that she would
likely earn the Queen’s enmity, Lettice
married Leicester in secret, leading
to her permanent banishment from
court. Elizabeth never forgave the new
Countess for what she perceived to
be a devastating betrayal, and Lettice
permanently forfeited her favour. She
had become not just Queen Elizabeth’s
adversary. She was her rival.
But the Countess’ story does not end
there. Surviving the death of two
husbands and navigating the courts of
three very different monarchs: Henry
VIII, Elizabeth I, and Charles I, Lettice’s
story offers an extraordinary and
intimate perspective on the world in
which she lived.

Freshford Pre-School
FINDING THEIR WAY
A s I write in early December with
the countdown to Christmas well
underway the Pre-schoolers have
been enjoying getting into character
to practice our Christmas show, which
this year is called ‘The Christmas Owls’.
The owls are lost, and are trying to
find Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus.
Luckily, with a little help from their
friends, they find their way! This lovely
twist of a much loved story as well as
incorporating the Nativity theme
proves to be highly effective in
engaging all the children and sparking
their imaginations. We are looking
forward to families and friends
enjoying this performance.
ALL ABOUT ME
Our outing to the Victoria Art Gallery
was a huge success, with all the children
having such a great time and being
fantastic ambassadors for Pre-school.
They took part in an ‘All about me’
workshop, allowing them to create
self-portraits which they proudly
showed all their friends afterwards.
There was also an opportunity to dress
up as some people displayed around
the gallery – including a lieutenant and
Henry the 8th!
SHOWING RESILIENCE
With a leaking roof in the Pre-school
room, the children have shown their
super resilience and adaptability,
and are having a lovely time in the
Hall, exploring the space in so many
different ways. They have enjoyed
yoga, Zumba, obstacle courses, and the
large construction blocks allowing for
open ended play creating pathways,
houses and dens! Outside, the children
have created a construction area,
which provides them a safe space to
dig, whilst dressing up for the job – in
hard hats, high visibility clothes, using
headphones and other resources to
support their play.
OUTINGS AND PLAYS
Before the end of term, we are very
excited to be joined by Music for
Miniatures, who will perform ‘The
Snowman’ in the last week of term.
We are also going to be treated
to watching the dress rehearsal of
Freshford School’s performance, before
venturing out on our last outing of the
year to St Peter’s Church, to experience
bell ringing and discuss the gift of
giving. What a fun filled few weeks for
the children to enjoy before Christmas.
On our return, we will be welcoming
some new children to our Pre-school
family, as well as following the children’s
interests to explore, create and discover
many new learning opportunities in fun
ways the children can extend and
adapt freely.

GALLERIES CHARITY OF THE YEAR: ST PETER’S CHURCH, DISABLED ACCESS APPEAL
We are delighted to have been
chosen to be the Galleries Charity of
the Year! Not only will it help to raise
some much needed funds, but will
also raise the profile for our
re-ordering project. Thank you to
everyone who voted for us.
Our collecting boxes are now in
the shop, and we already have a
jumble sale booked for Saturday,
September 28th, 2019. We’re also
hoping to have other fundraising
events during the coming year.
Ideas, offers of help, etc are always
gratefully received. They don’t have
to be on a grand scale.
Richard Blamey has set up a 100
square on our behalf, and I’m sure
he’d be happy to hear from you,
should you wish to participate.
We’ve also had two delightful
concerts organised by Margaret
Dodge, in the past eighteen months,
which have raised several hundred
pounds for our appeal.
The access issues at St Peter’s,
Freshford are well known and,
although our long term plan
is to re-order the interior of
the church to make it a more
welcoming, comfortable and
community-friendly, our priority at
the moment is the access, hence the
Galleries’ appeal, which will benefit
the whole community.

Recipe of the month
MAUREEN WHITE
A comforting rich casserole to warm on a cold January day.
DUCK WITH SEVILLE ORANGES
Marmalade is not the only way to use
these bitter oranges, available now in
the shops. The tart juice also makes
a sharp, savoury sauce which is an
excellent accompaniment to duck
and other rich meats.
Ingredients
• 6 duck breasts, skin on
• 1 medium-sized onion
• 1 carrot
• 1 large stick of celery
• Olive oil
• 3/4 pint good chicken stock
or similar
• Grated rind and squeezed juice
from 3 Seville oranges
• 1 large glass red wine
• 1 good tablespoon redcurrant jelly
• 1 bunch watercress
• 1 large sweet orange, cut into
6 segments
Method
1. Dice the onion, carrot and celery
and cook gently in a little olive oil.
2. Stir in the flour and continue to
cook over a low heat, stirring all
the time.
3. Add the stock slowly and simmer
gently for 15 minutes.
4. Pierce the skins of the duck breasts
all over so that they will release a
lot of the surplus fat.
5. Put them, skin side up, in a roasting
tin and cook in a hot oven (400°
F/200° C/Gas Mark 6) for
10 minutes.
6. Remove and drain off the excess fat
(wonderful for roast potatoes).
7. Add the orange rind and juice, wine
and redcurrant jelly to the pan.
8. Strain in the sauce, pressing the
vegetables gently in the sieve to
extract as much flavour as
possible without actually sieving
the vegetables.
9. Stir well, bring back to the boil and
return to the oven, lower the heat
a little and cook, covered, until the
duck is tender.
10. Garnish with the watercress and
orange wedges, and serve with
small new potatoes, or creamy
mash, crisp green beans, and petits
pois (frozen ones cooked in a little
butter for a few minutes).

And rustling the leaves.”
So writes Giles Andreae the award
winning children’s author. We start the
year with a quick quiz based on 16 wildlife photos for species seen in our three
parishes in the last couple of years by members of FLEWG and Bathnats.
Happy New Year from FLEWG and well done for having a go!

Book review: The Rosie Project
BY GRAEME SIMSION
Ron Tillman, professor of genetics,
has never been on a second date.
But when an acquaintance suggests
that he could make a wonderful
husband, after the initial shock, he
concedes that with his background in
genetics and statistics there statistically
must be someone for everyone. So he
then embarks upon The Wife Project….
Applying a hilariously orderly and
research-based methodology to the
task in hand, Don sets out to find the
perfect partner. Utilising a scrupulously
detailed questionnaire, she will be
punctual and logical—most definitely
not a barmaid, a smoker, a drinker,
or a late-arriver.
Meanwhile, Rosie Jarman barrels into
Ron’s life – seeking Ron’s expertise in
DNA to help her
find her biological
father. As well
as being fiery
and intelligent as
well as strangely
bewitching, she also
seems to represent
all the characteristics
Ron dislikes –
especially being a
terrible timekeeper.
But nevertheless,
Rosie drags him
along humorous
escapades in her
quest to track down her father. There
is a fantastic episode when Don
applies his amazing memory skills to
an evening of cocktail making! So, Don
parks his Wife Project to help her with
her Father Project, nurturing a strange
and blossoming friendship at the same
time. And who knows – whilst on paper
they might not make a good match,
there are surely always exceptions to
the rules?
This is a great feel good book. I loved
reading about Don’s quirks and getting
under his skin. The fact that the novel is
written by a man about a man brought
authenticity to Don’s voice in the book.
And it was delightful to see Don’s
reluctant start when he first meets
Rosie grow into warmth and affection
as she unpicks his idiosyncrasies and
love blossoms. Well recommended!

LIMPLEY STOKE VILLAGE HALL
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
AUTUMN SUPPER & FILM SHOW
Many thanks to everyone who came to the Supper & Film Show on 24th November: this was an evening which seemed to be very much
enjoyed by everyone. A net profit of £1135.00 was made, the best ever since these evenings started, and this will be put towards the ongoing upkeep and improvements to the Village Hall. Thank you to the many people who helped out on the night, cooking, washing up, showing
the film, setting up the equipment, manning the bar and all the other tasks which helped to make the evening so successful.
Again, a huge thank you to everyone!
“And now let us believe in a long year that is given to us, new, untouched, full of things that have never been.”Rainer Maria Rilke
