Priests for Life and a coalition of religious and pro-life groups have announced a Week of Prayer and Fasting to end the Evils of Abortion and Planned Parenthood, from August 22-29, 2015. At www.PrayerCampaign.org, several prayers have been posted to utilize during this week. These prayers include the intentions of repentance for our nation, an end to the killing of children and the selling of their body parts, healing for those wounded by abortion, conversion of abortionists, and strength and perseverance for pro-life activists. Please use and promote these prayers (available in English and Spanish) among your friends, families and social media contacts. Those who are participating are asked to sign up at www.PrayerCampaign.org.

MASS INTENTION

Please pray for the repose of the soul for Marvin Manley, a member of St. Johns Mission. Marvin passed away on August 8, 2015.

For Friday, August 14, 2015 6pm

For Kelsie Villalobos, for the repose of her soul, offered by Isidro Soto family

For Sunday, August 16, 2015 10:15 Mass

In remembrance of Ramon Chavez and Eligio Ramirez offered by the Ramirez family.

Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world. (1 Cor 11:27-32)

St. Paul teaches that examining oneself is a prerequisite for worthy reception of the Eucharist. If not, Holy Communion has the opposite of the desired effect of union with our Lord, bringing condemnation rather than blessing. So, out of respect for Christ and for our own good, the Church requires us to be in a state of grace when we receive. We are required to abstain only when there is mortal sin. Confessions of devotion, however, are highly recommended.

Please take advantage of the opportunities offered at St. Joseph’s and St. John’s to participant in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The sacrament of Reconciliation should be first and beyond all else a joyful celebration

of God’s forgiving and merciful love for us.

Fr. Joe Scott, CSP

Heal a Hurting Marriage through Retrouvaille

The Retrouvaille (pronounced retro-vī) marriage-saving program is featured in

the latest edition of Northwest Catholic magazine in an article titled, “Healing a

Hurting Marriage” by Sarah Bartel,

http://www.nwcatholic.org/living/marriage-parenting/healing-a-hurting-marriage

For confidential information about, or to register for the upcoming Retrouvaille

program beginning Sept 18-20, 2015 call 360-671-6479 or visit our website at

www.HelpOurMarriage.com.

What is the Retrouvaille program?

Retrouvaille is a community of volunteers

committed to helping hurting couples heal their

marriages. The Retrouvaille program offers

couples the opportunity to rediscover each

other and examine their lives in a new and

positive way. No matter what is causing the

hurt, couples can find healing. Retrouvaille is

Catholic in origin and supported by the Seattle

Archdiocese.

Who is it for?

It is for couples with strained marriages,

including those in the initial stages of distress,

as well as those in a state of hopelessness and

considering divorce. While many attendees

are Catholic, married couples of all faiths are

welcome.

Information for our volunteers who are part of the Seattle Archdiocese’s

Safe Environment Program

Changes to the Safe Environment Program

Welcome to Virtus!

Effective July I, 2015, the Archdiocese of Seattle has changed vendors and is now using VIRTUS for its training as well as for tracking Safe Environment compliance. VIRTUS offers a comprehensive program, in-cluding Safe Environment training for adults as well as children and youth. VIRTUS also provides a more convenient way for participants to register, read and sign Safe Environment policies online, fill out infor-mation for a criminal background check and register for a Safe Environment class.

How will the changes affect you?

All current employees and volunteers who have already completed the Safe Environment requirements will be automatically transferred into the new database. VIRTUS will send log-on infor-mation to every current participant by the end of August. Those who have already attended a Called to Protect for Ministries class will not be required to take the VIRTUS foundation class, Protecting God’s Children. These individuals w ill be notified by VIRTUS when it is time to renew their background check and/or take an online refresher course, which is now required every three years.

New employees and volunteers w ill be able to log-on to VirtusOnline.org, establish their account and follow the steps to becoming compliant with all Safe Environment requirements.

Each parish and school in the Archdiocese of Seattle has a designated Safe Environment coordinator who will be assisting employees, volunteers and parents with this transition. Watch for more information in the coming weeks. Please do not hesitate to contact your coordinator with your questions or concerns.

Thank you

As always, we thank you for your commitment to keeping our parishes and schools safe and healthy for our children, youth and vulnerable adults.
