Serves 2 generously

Jar of tomato & chilli sauce (Lloyd Grossman’s is my favourite)

Dear Friends

It is with deep sadness that we draw near to the clo-sure of the All Saints church building. However, the PCC felt that it was important that the life and achievements of this church community should be properly marked and celebrated. As a result it has been agreed that a number of services will be held as well as a concert. There will also be , during this period an exhibition. The first of these services will be a Renewal of Marriage Vows on Saturday 18th March at 3pm to be followed by prosecco and cake. This service is for anyone who has been married at All Saints but also for anyone who has a connection with the church and would like to take this opportunity to renew their vows. The following weekend in our Sunday service on 26th March at 10.30am coinciding with Mother’s Day there will be an All Age Worship Service which will include a renewal of baptism vows again for anyone who has been baptized at All Saints, families whose children have been baptized there or anyone who has a connection with the church and wishes to renew their vows. On the 23rd April at 3pm there will be a formal service of celebration of the 50th Anniversary of All Saints church. All are invited to this service and will be most welcome. There will also be a farewell concert to be held at the church on the 30th March at 7.30pm. The final service will be a parish communion on Sunday 30th April. Despite all this, it is without doubt that this is a difficult and sad time for the congregation of All Saints and we hold them all in our prayers. In terms of the future

In terms of the future both Messy Church and Celtic Communion will be held in the church hall. Both services will continue to take place on the 1st Sunday of the month (11.15am for Messy Church and a new earlier time of 4.00pm for Celtic Communion). The Church Hall will undergo an extensive refurbishment over the summer and it will also retain the ‘All Saints’ name. There will be a new kitchen, new storage areas and proper disabled access. It is important to remember that although this much loved building is clos-ing the church is not. It is our prayerful hope that as we join together as united congregation with services both at St George and All Saints church hall that the church community will thrive and grow as we work together in mission and ministry for Jesus Christ.

The Place of Music and Singing in Church (adapted from Vaughan Roberts’s article of the same title)

- A personal perspective from our organist at St George Throughout the Bible, there are references to music and song. Jubal (Genesis 4) is the earliest and was the ancestor of all who played lyre and pipe (or kinnor and uggab in Hebrew). Moses was also a singer and David played the harp as well as writing many of the psalms we use in our ser-vices. Even our Lord sang (Matthew 26.30) at the Last Supper. The book of Revelation mentions singing many times but we are told not to wait until heaven before we sing. St Paul states that we should “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.” (Ephesians 5.9)

There are few of us that cannot respond to music in some way. We are all different however. Some of us find the serenity of Taize worship or the dim-ly lit medieval building resounding to plainsong does it for them. Others are left cold by that! Some are moved by the guitar, drum and keyboard based ‘All age praise’ style worship. Others are moved by Choral evensong accom-panied by the organ including all of its traditions and beautiful words.

The Bible however, never teaches that a feeling can take us into the pres-ence of God. If that had been possible, God would have sent us a musician rather than a saviour. Only Christ can take us into the Most Holy Place in Heaven, where we have direct access to the Father through faith in him. In some churches, the time given to Bible teaching is becoming less and less and the reliance on feeling is becoming more and more prevalent. Paul writes: “Faith comes through hearing the message and the message is heard through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17). When choosing which service to attend what comes first? Music or the Bible? Yes, music is im-portant but it is possible to survive in our faith without it. We could not sur-vive without God’s word.

The best Christian musicians will not be primarily seeking to produce an ex-perience. They will be pointing to Christ and focussing attention on the truth about him.

Why Should We Sing? Peter tells us: “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who

Messy Church

Everyone welcome, please come and join us!

Our theme for February was based on the parables of The Hidden Treasure and The Pearl of Great Price. Before we got started on the crafts, Eric ex-plained how the parables mean that the Kingdom of Heaven is as precious as the treasure and the pearl.

A wide variety of crafts reflected the theme and we were kept busy making both edible and card treasure chests, oysters with pearls made from pegs and paper plates, a treasure map and a very wet and squidgy 'Seaweed Challenge' game where you had to find the pearls (marbles) hidden in the seaweed (tagliatelle). There are some great photos of everyone concen-trating hard on our Facebook page. Why not take a look?

During celebration time we sang a worship song 'Seek ye first the Kingdom of God' as a round, and it sounded so lovely, we think we should start a Messy Church choir!

Lunch was pasta with sausages followed by delicious cakes, which was quickly demolished after our busy morning.

Our next Messy Church will be

5th March at 11.15 am—

In All Saints’ Church Hall'

Theme: Listening to God'.

The place of Music & Singing in Church (continued)

The song below is full of personal elements yet the first line sums up the point above in such a simple direct way. “After the word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world” (Martin Luther)

A song suitable for Holy Week

How deep the Father’s love for us, How vast beyond all measure, That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure. How great the pain of searing loss - The Father turns His face away, As wounds which mar the Chosen One Bring many sons to glory.

Behold the man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders; Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me life - I know that it is finished.

I will not boast in anything, No gifts, no power, no wisdom; But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer; But this I know with all my heart - His wounds have paid my ransom.

Happiness is warm feet in bed

If you have never discovered the cosy bliss of wearing socks in bed, you are in for a real treat. According to experts from the Global Council on Brain Health, wearing socks in bed helps ensure uninterrupted slumber. In a recent report, the Global Council was stressing the importance of getting sound sleep in order to stay sharp in later life. And so it offers various tips to the over-50s. They include: keep pets out of your bedroom, avoid late-night rows with your family; allow 15 minutes of ‘settle time’ before you switch off the light; avoid food, alcohol and drink for three hours before bed; keep your smartphone and tablet in another room; have a warm bath; and swap white or blue lights for warmer, restful colours. Sleep well!

The place of music and singing in church (continued)

called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” (1 Peter 2.9). We are here as Christians to belong to God for the purpose of declaring his praises.

Emotions and Singing How many of us feel moved when we see the words “ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven” on the written page. Yes, out of context they may seem a little random. Put them into context within the wonderful hymn “Praise my soul the King of Heaven” and who can fail to be moved by the emotion.

The Power of Music Chocolate is dear to my heart. Why? Because I loved the Dance of the Mirli-tons by Tchaikovsky (aka Everyone’s a fruit and nut case…). Tunes are of course an integral part of the hymns we use every week but what of the words? A fantastic tune can enhance a set of verses. What is your favourite hymn? Is it the words or is it the music or is it the whole package? Often the words are the things that sticks more, especially if the tune is difficult to play!

A good song for worship……. Question – is the song faithful to scripture?

Question – is the song God-focussed? Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-hey (x7) – great line in a recent worship song. Fun to sing yes but empty of meaning?

Question – is the song clear? How many of our songs and hymns use meta-phor and imagery? Yes, most of them! But is there so much that it is impos-sible to get the meaning clear in your mind?

On the wings of eagles, we ride upon the breeze of your Spirit’s lifting, our minds being freed from the things that have torn us and taken life away, once more soaring higher, freedom breaking in again…..

I don’t know what this means! Answers on a postcard please! [Editor— I It seems to me it’s a poetic description of the effects on someone’s life who has experienced the deep healing work of the Holy Spirit which brings real freedom to many people who have been in bondage.]

Question – is the song selfish? Do our songs promote the thought of me and God? Songs should be di-rected to those around us and encourage the fact that God’s love is for all God’s people (continued on page 13)
