Padre’s Corner (Reprinted from March 22, 2020 bulletin) August 23, 2020 TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Mass in the time of COVID-19 Aleteia/Fr. Aquinas Guilbeau, OP/March 8, 2020

The Church does not fail, whatever the trials of the day, to offer the whole Christ to all of the faithful.

Last Thursday afternoon, residents of Washington, DC, learned that the new coronavirus had arrived at their city’s doorstep. Earlier that day, Maryland confirmed that three of its citizens had contracted the virus. On Friday, as prior of the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, I followed the example of superiors and pastors around the country and implemented measures aimed at preventing the spread of the virus in my community. Those measures include significant changes to the liturgical practice, namely the suspension of exchanging the sign of peace and receiving communion under both species (the body and blood). Given how the coronavirus spreads, these two measures represent common-sense steps toward preventing future infections. At the same time, they represent consequential alterations of familiar religious practice. This is not to be taken lightly, and most superiors and pastors do not. More than changing where the celebrant sits or where the choir members stand, suspending the sign of peace and communion under both species touches on how the Christian community has grown used to communicating with God and each other at Mass. Sensitivity has to be shown, therefore, to those not only worried about the spread of disease, but also disoriented by these liturgical changes. The Mass may appear suddenly to be less, to mean less, or to give less than usual. The good news is that these changes touch nothing of the essence of the Mass.

The sign of peace has become a beloved expression of reconciliation and unity among believers just before they approach the altar to receive communion. Husbands embrace wives, parents embrace children, friends embrace friends, and strangers embrace strangers, each wishing each other the peace of Christ. When prayed attentively, this is a beautiful prayer. Without the sign of peace, is the peace of Christ suddenly missing from Mass? No, to be sure. While the sign of peace expresses the peace of Christ, it is not the source. The sign of Peace does not create Christ’s peace. Christ remains the source of peace, and he gives his peace to his disciples through his presence in the whole liturgy, namely through the proclamation of the scriptures and in the celebration of the Eucharist. Christ gives his peace to those who gather to pray to him, to hear his Word, and to offer the Eucharist sacrifice. It may be prudent for the Church not to express the sign of peace for a time by a kiss or handshake, but that doesn’t mean that the faithful at Mass don’t receive Christ’s peace in full. We do. Similarly, communion under both species has become the way in which many Catholic prefer to receive the Eucharist. In accord with the words of communion under both species, are they receiving less of what the Lord pledges to give them? No, to be sure. While Communion under both species expresses more fully the sign of the Eucharist sacrifice as a meal, it isn’t necessary to receive both in order to participate fully in the sacrifice itself. As the Catechism reminds us, communicants receive the whole Christ under either species of the Eucharist: Since Christ is sacramentally present under each of the species, communion under the species of bread alone makes it possible to receive all the fruit of Eucharistic grace” (par. 1390). Jesus does not give us less of himself if we receive him only in the Sacred Host or in the Precious Blood. He gives his whole self under each species. It may be prudent for the Church not to enjoy for a time the full expression of the Eucharistic sign, but that doesn’t mean that the faithful at Mass don’t receive the full grace of the sacrament. We do. In these trying and uncertain times, the Church does not retreat from the world’s troubles. She may simplify her life for a moment or two, in order to safeguard her children from harm, but she surrenders nothing of her essence in doing so. She remains the guardian of Christ’s truth and the steward of his grace. As such, the Church does not fail, whatever the trials of the day, to offer the whole Christ to all the faithful. PONDERINGS FROM FATHER BILL In all of my years of existence, I do not recall a crisis of this magnitude in the aftermath of the worldwide hold by the Coronavirus. The convergent worlds of economics, government, entertainment, laws, and even organized religion have been decimated numerically and emotionally. When China closed all churches in late February, I was suspicious. Then Italy announced similar closures, before the Vatican walled off Saint Peter’s Square and the museums. The Archdiocese of New York implemented policies of safety, as no one really knows how this health horror show will be settled. Human efforts aside, I do believe this stirring of instability and unpredictability is a chance to realize that our true strength and durability exists in our sacramental and prayerful relationship with God. No human structure or institution comes close to the safety and purity that He offers to us. Father Bill

Today TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Isaiah 22:19-23 This passage refers to the use of authority and indicates the Key as the symbol of authority. The words “open” and “shut” refer to the power that will eventually be given to Peter. Second Reading: Romans 11:33-36 Paul writes ecstatic and praise-filled words about God’s plan for his people. In him, he writes, “all things are.” Gospel: Matthew 16:13-20 When Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter exclaims, “You are the Messiah!” Christ then declares that Peter is the “Rock” upon which he will build his Church, promising him the power “to bind” and “to loose.” Monday Rv 21:9b-14; Jn 1:45-51 Tuesday 2 Thes 2:1-3a, 14-17; Mt 23:23-26 Wednesday 2 Thes 3:6-10, 16-18; Mt 23:27-32 Thursday 1 Cor 1:1-9; Mt 24:42-51 Friday 1 Cor 1:17-25; Mt 25:1-13 Saturday 1 Cor 1:26-31; Mk 6:17-29

Let doubting cease. The battle is the Lord’s; He works

In a mysterious way. ‘Tis not by might, nor power, but see

His Spirit move today. Unprofitable servants we; Our duty done, we must

Watch for His victory, So, fearful one,

Be still, and trust.

RCIA NEWS NOTES In our parish, the process known as the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (R.C.I.A.) is available to anyone who would like to have the opportunity to learn about the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. The process is open to any adult who is unbaptized, or a member of a denomination other than the Catholic Church, or a baptized Catholic who has not completed reception of the Sacraments of Initiation (Eucharist and/or Confirmation). The formal aspects of the RCIA will take individuals through various stages of study, prayer, and spiritual formation, culminating in baptism (for non-Christians) or full reception into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. There are three stages of the RCIA: the period of Inquiry, the period of the Catechumenate (formal instruction), and the period of Mystagogia (incorporation into the Mystery of Faith and participation in the Faith Community). If you know a man or woman who has expressed some personal interest in Catholicism (or if you are such a person), please contact a member of the Parish Staff or call the rectory 845-561-2264. Informal introductory sessions will acquaint the inquirer with the RCIA process. For those who desire it, this will be the first step on a journey of faith within the Faith Community of St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta Parish.

Msgr. Henry O’ Carroll Council #444 of the Knights of Columbus in Newburgh is excited to announce that we are starting a Family of the Month program. This program will involve our four churches: Sacred Heart, St. Francis, St. Patrick’s, and Our Lady of the Lake, which we support on many levels. Each month, one family will be selected with the help of the parish priest. Churches and the months for the award: Sacred Heart – July, September, and March St. Francis – August, December, and April St. Patrick’s - October, January, and May Our Lady of the Lake – November, February, and June This will allow three families per church per year. At the end of the year one family from the group of 12 will be selected as Family of the Year. The family selected does not need to be a member of the Knights of Columbus. There are seven items that will be considered for the family selection. Is the family supportive of each other? Does the family spend quality time together? Does the family attend weekly mass together? Does the family pray together outside of mass? Has the family made significant contribution to the parish and church community? Does the family serve as a role model of Catholic family values? Parish Pastor Recommendation. There are no fees involved. Each family selected will receive a certificate and a gift from Msgr. Henry O’ Carroll Council that will be given out at a specified mass. There are forms you can fill out to nominate your family or another family you think would be deserving of the award. The form will be near a box in the back of each church where you can drop it off, or you can contact us by email at [email protected], or you can call Bill Kuntz with any questions at 201-697-9920. Thank you for your interest. Good luck to all families, and God bless all. “Everybody today seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater developments and greater riches and so on, so that children have very little time for their parents. Parents have very little time for each

other, and in the home begins the disruption of peace of the world.”
