From the Desk of the Pastor December 4, 2016Make Ready the Way of the Lord

Second Sunday of Advent

First Reading: Isaiah 11:1-10The Advent readings of Isaiah are beautiful and anticipate the coming of the Messiah. In this reading, Isaiah proph-esied of a new and ideal king and a harmonious existence, with natural enemies coexisting peacefully.

Second Reading: Romans 15:4-9Scripture gives us hope and encouragement, so that we might have courage, endure, and think in harmony with the teachings of Jesus Christ. He welcomed all, Jews and Gen-tiles, to His mercy. For our part, He deserves our praise and gratitude.

Gospel: Matthew 3:1-12In this Gospel reading, we are reminded to leave behind our rebellious and disobedient ways and to become obedient to God. It looks forward to the coming of the Messiah and, ul-timately, the time when God overcomes death for our sakes and judges us with justice and mercy.

Next Week: 3rd Sunday of AdventFirst Reading: Isaiah 35:1-6A, 10

Second Reading: James 5:7-10Gospel: Matthew 11:2-11

Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both

the spiritual and social needs of our people and build community within and without our parish.

One of the most difficult jobs in the world of entertainment is that of the “advance person.” This is the per-son who is expected to prepare the audience for the real star of the show.

John the Baptist is Jesus’ advance man. It is John who came as the one given the mission to herald the com-ing of the Messiah; and his coming is near at hand.

Few entertainers would want John as their advance man. He does not dress properly (camel’s hair and a leather belt) and his diet is not quite gourmet (grasshoppers and wild honey). Above all, John does not come to comfort the troubled but rather to trouble the comfortable. In other words, John is perfect for the role of herald. He knows he is not the Messiah. His baptism is with water – “There is One coming who will baptize with the Spirit”.

Conversion is never easy and change always calls for sacrifice. It is symbolized in the “Royal Purple” worn during the season. Making a good confession is the best way to prepare the way of the Lord in our lives and for Christmas.

Read the bulletin and find there a number of opportunities to come to confession: on Saturday afternoons at our parish churches (3:30 - 3:55 PM at Assumption and 4:00 - 5:00 PM at Im-maculate Conception) and Reconciliation Monday on December 19 at 4:00 – 8:00 PM.

Advent not only turns our minds and hearts to the Stable of Bethlehem, but also calls us for-ward to the time when the Lord will take us home.

Father Anthony Domenic Sorgie

Advent Day of PrayerSaturday, December 10

Prepare for Christmas this year in a special way! Join Fr. An-dré and fellow parishioners for an Advent Day of Reflection!Treat yourself to a time of silence and prayerful reflective listening and reading on Saturday, December 10, 9:00-3:30 PM at Fr. Fata Hall.We will use the book, Bringing Forth Christ: Five Feasts of the Child Jesus by St. Bonaventure, who invites us to dis-cover how we could spiritually conceive the Son of God, give birth to Him, name Him, seek and adore Him with the Magi, and then, finally, present Him to God in the temple, all through a meditative reflection on the feasts of: Annuncia-tion, Nativity, Holy Name, Epiphany, and Presentation. The day includes a special 8:30 AM Mass at Assumption Church. Then we move to Fr. Fata Hall for registration and breakfast. The cost of $25 includes the breakfast, a light lunch, and St. Bonaventure’s book. For the day’s complete schedule and the registration infor-mation, please refer to

Morning Out; Learn and Play!Tuesday, December 6

Parents or grandparents of infants, toddlers and pre-school children are invited to discuss behavior, social, and discipline topics while their children engage in su-pervised play and craft time. Archdiocesan trained facili-tators will help in the discussions. Sessions are Tuesday mornings: 9:45 to 11:15 AM in the lower level of Father Fata Hall. For our December 6 meeting, we will dis-cuss Self Care for Stressed Parents. To reserve a space, please, contact Michelle at [email protected] or 787-0005.

Parents Connect MeetingTuesday, December 13

Join us on Tuesday, December 13th at 10:00 AM in the Lower Level of Father Fata Hall. The Parents Connect mis-sion is to provide an opportunity for parents to connect and learn from each other in a welcoming, open and faith filled environment. We will discuss Divine Mercy for Moms - Sharing the Les-

sons of St. Faustina by Michele Faehnle and Emily Jaminet. If you don’t have time to read the chapters, please join us anyway; we use the book to initiate conversation.

Child care is provided. Please contact Mi-chelle at [email protected] or 787-0005 to RSVP and let us know how many children will be joining you.

Is God Calling You to be a Lector? The Lector proclaims God’s Word at Mass in the First and Second Readings as well as reads the Introduction and the Prayers of the Faithful. If you are a Catholic in good standing and have good communication skills, prayer-fully consider whether God is calling you to this ministry. Submit your name for consideration as well as your con-tact information (cell phone and e-mail address) to Fr. Sorgie or Sr. Cora. You will be contacted by one of them.

Is God Calling You to be anExtraordinary Minister of Holy

Communion? An Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion assists the priest at the celebration of the Eucharist (Mass) to distribute the Holy Eucharist, the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, to other parishioners. If you have a great love and devotion to the Eucharist and are a Catho-lic in good standing, prayerfully consider whether God is calling you to this ministry. Submit your name to be con-sidered for this ministry as well as your contact informa-tion (cell phone and e-mail address) to Fr. Sorgie or Sr. Cora. You will be contacted by one of them.

religious educAtionThe CCD children are learning about the Liturgical Year, Advent, and the Christmas story. One of our special fam-ily events this season is our Christmas pageant. The chil-dren will star in the Christmas story on Sunday, Decem-ber 11, at 3 PM. Although the Church is already filled with families, we have reserved a few seats for parish-ioners. If you would like to attend, please call the CCD office at 961-1076.

Feast of the Immaculate ConceptionClasses are cancelled Wednesday evening, December 7, and Thursday, December 8, so that children can attend the Holy Day of Obligation Mass with their families.

Thanksgiving Food DriveThanks to all who participated in our annual Thanksgiv-ing Food Drive! Special thanks go to Lynn Callahan who began this tradition for Religious Ed years ago, long be-fore she took the retirement package offered by the Arch-diocese last year. Through this program, many needy families have been able to share a great Thanksgiving meal.

Pastoral CouncilIt is time for me to create a “Pastoral Council”. This will be a group of men and women, reg-istered parishioners, young and not so young who help to guide the Pastoral work of the par-ish: the ministries, apostolates, societies, com-munity outreach, CCD, Regional school, ceme-tery, evangelization, welcoming new members, etc.

The vibrant life of our Parish in the Archdiocese of New York and the Catholic Church which I am mandated to Shepherd, requires the help of many people, both employed and an army of volunteers, to steer our Parish into living the Mission Statement found on the top of page 1.

If anyone is interested in talking to me about serving on a new Pastoral Council, just give me a call, or stop by, or mention it when we meet. I am going to try to put at least a first group in place before the New Year.

Respectfully in Christ,Father Anthony Sorgie

AttentionRecently Married Parishioners

Many individuals who have recently married continue to be registered parishioners as part of their parents’ families, even if the parish is not the one they currently attend. Often they plan to move in the not-too-distant future and do not want to initiate a change until that decision has been made. Couples who do live in the parish and want to be registered as a new family should call the rectory or register online at our parish web site: www.assumption-immaculate.org.

66. People give me books to read about our Christian Faith. How can I tell if a book is accurate and faithful to our Catholic Beliefs?”

There are many popular books that claim to present the Catholic faith, but unless the content is reviewed by an authorized member of the Church, it is hard to know if it is accurate.

Look for an ‘imprimatur’ printed in the first few pages of the book. The presence of an imprimatur generally means that a bishop’s office has determined it to be free of doctrinal or moral errors. It may be accompanied by a ‘nihil obstat’ (Latin for “nothing standing in the way”) which means that someone well-versed in Catholic theol-ogy has reviewed the contents and found the same thing.

It is important that a book claiming to be Catholic has the approval of the Catholic Church. There are many well-meaning people who intend to educate others about God’s infinite love, but have an imperfect understanding of Catholic doctrine. Be sure before you delve into a text.

Update on theBenedictine Monks of Norcia

Our parish has sent our donations to Rev. Cassian Folsom, OSB, the Prior of the Benedictine Monks of Norcia, whose Monastery and the Basilica of St. Benedict built over the birthplace of the Patron Saint of Europe were tremendously damaged. The earthquake at 7.1 on the Richter scale, had its epicenter in the main Piazza of Norcia. The town is now a red zone and the entire village is emp-tied to either families or a tent village. The monks continue to minister and bring hope to the people and are trying to rebuild an old Capuchin monas-tery as their monastic dwelling for years to come.

Annual Collection Next Weekend for the Retired Religious and Clergy

Next weekend, we will take up the annual archdiocesan collection for the thousands of retired Catholic sisters and brothers whose hard work, prayers, and sacrifices helped build our Catholic schools, hospitals, and charitable agencies. These dedicated women and men gave - and give - their lives in extraordinary and exemplary service to the archdiocese; and now, as they move into their se-nior years, we are able to offer them in return, our love and support through this annual collection that helps to provide for their needs.

Jesse Tree Gifts CollectionNow Through Sunday, December 18

Our annual collection of Christmas gifts for chil-dren and adults less fortunate than ourselves is underway. As always, the groups include battered women and children, unwed moth-ers, families in transition and need, children and grandchildren of prisoners, the home-less, and children and young adults with special needs or life threatening illnesses. Their ages range from the unborn to the elderly.

Please obtain a gift tag from one of the baskets located at either Church. We would appreciate receiving your new, wrapped gifts with the gift tag attached as soon as pos-sible, but no later than December 18th. These gifts should be placed under the Jesse Tree located at either church. We encourage everyone to take at least one gift tag for this worthwhile outreach project. The recipients have always been extremely grateful.

Please refer to the Jesse Tree web site announcement for the dates and times that we will be processing the gifts.
