From the Desk of Fr. Connolly January 15, 2017January: The Holy Name of Jesus
Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:1-3St. Paul began his Epistles with a greeting that identified himself, and sometimes a fellow author, as well as the com-munity to which he was writing. This short reading covers that initial greeting.
First Reading: Isaiah 49:3, 5-6The “servant” in this reading had been distinguished by God: “… through whom I show my glory.” But his mission was to go beyond restoring the survivors of Israel – he would be a light to the nations of the earth, bringing God’s salvation throughout the world.
Gospel: John 1:29-34St. John the Baptist had not known that Jesus was the Christ until the revelation of the Spirit. At this, he immediately identified Jesus as the Lamb of God, Who came before him and was superior to him. St. John, who baptized with water, knew he was only a precursor to the One Who would baptize with the Holy Spirit.
Next Week: Third Sunday in Ordinary TimeFirst Reading: Isaiah 8:23 - 9:3
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17Gospel: Matthew 4:12-23
Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tucka-hoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the spiritual and social needs of our people and build
community within and without our parish.
It is a cherished custom of our Catholic Tradition to dedicate each month of the year to a particular devotion. The dedication of each month is based either on a certain event in salvation history, the liturgical calendar, or a combina-tion of the two. Our mother the Church, provides us, her children, with beautiful customs such as this to help us grow in holiness by fostering our devotion to these different components of our religion. The current month of January is dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus.
The Holy Name of God is Jesus! We read in Sacred Scripture how the angel Gabriel revealed that name to the Blessed Virgin Mary: “You shall call His name Jesus,” he said. And to St. Joseph, the angel not merely revealed the name but explained its meaning: “You shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins,” he said. So, the Messiah should not only be the savior, but should be called Savior. With Jesus, therefore, the name actually tells the purpose of His existence. That is why we must esteem His name as sacred. We must never blaspheme and use His name impiously or say it in vain. Whenever we pronounce it, we ought to bow our heads for the very name reminds us of the greatest gift we have ever received: salvation.
You are likely to have seen before, the IHS monogram depicted above. It is the first three letters of the Greek spelling of the Holy Name of Jesus. The insignia is nothing more (and nothing less) than the symbol of the Holy Name used of-ten to ornament churches or vestments. It is popular legend that the IHS stands for the Latin phrase Iesus Hominum Salvator, “Jesus the Savior of Men.” While this is a fine devotion, it is not historically accurate.
There is no other Name under heaven given to men whereby we can be saved! (Acts 4:12)

The Parish NurseHealth care Proxy
http://www.stoppain.org/palliative_careInformation compiled by: Susan Anello MS RN
If you have any questions or suggestions for topics that you would like to see covered, leave your name and number at the parish office for Susan
to contact you, or you may e-mail her at [email protected]. Place “Parish Nurse” in subject area.
A health care proxy or agent is the person you designate to make medical decisions for you
only when you are no longer mentally capable to make your wishes known. Below are a few questions to ask the person whom you are considering to take on this impor-tant task:
1. Are you willing to be my health care agent and make medical decisions when I am no longer able?
2. Will these decisions be based on what I want, even if they do not coincide with what you would choose?
3. Will you be able to ask the doctor for information if you do not understand the treatment he is recommending?
4. Will you be able to make a medical decision and change it later if the treatment is not having the intended effect?
Things to think about:
1. Whom do you want to make decisions?2. What medical treatments are acceptable to you? Which
are not?3. Do you wish to be resuscitated if you stop breathing or
your heart stops?4. Do you want to be hospitalized if you are terminally ill?

72. What is the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity?
The traditional period for the Week of Prayer for Chris-tian Unity is 18-25 January. Those dates were proposed in 1908 by Paul Wattson, the Founder of the Friars and Sisters of the Atonement in our own Graymoor, to cover the days between the feasts of St. Peter and St. Paul, and therefore have a symbolic significance.
Today, the cooperation between Anglican, Protestant, Or-thodox and Catholic churches, parishes and communities in preparing for and celebrating the week of prayer has become a familiar practice. This simple fact is, in itself, strong evidence for the effectiveness of prayer for unity. It gives us every right to speak about the history of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity as one of success, and a reason for great joy and gratitude.
Jesus prayed that his disciples might be “One” as He and the Father are One. Recognizing that Christian denomi-nations are separated brethren, this week asks us to pray for the Unity Jesus prayed for, and therefore to mend the rifts that keep us apart. This is done while recognizing that we believe differently on many matters, but our Bib-lical Faith in Jesus as the Son of God strongly unites us.
If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will an-swer them to the best of our ability.
