Greetings and God’s blessings be yours on the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time! Today’s readings are about God’s love; the most thrilling news people can hear in their lifetime. It is because of this tremendous, bountiful, totally undeserving love poured out for us that we are asked to love God, self and neighbor in return. Loving God should not be seen as a burden for Christians but as a great joy. The first reading from Exodus tells the people to treat the disadvantaged with the compassion of God. "If he cries out to me, I will hear him; for I am compassionate." Then in Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians, it is the example of the apostles that moves people to come with joy to faith in Jesus Christ. "And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, receiving the word in great affliction, with joy from the Holy Spirit, so that you became a model for all the believers....." And in Matthew’s gospel, we have the great response of Jesus to the question, "Teacher which commandment in the law is the greatest?" Love of God with one’s total being and love of neighbor as oneself are the two commandments upon which the "whole law" depend. Life is complicated, but religion doesn’t have to be. If you can’t recite the Ten Commandments, list the nine Choirs of Angels, name the seven Capitol Sins or the six Precepts of the Church, the five books of the Pentateuch, the four gospel Evangelists, the three major prophets or know why there’s a partridge in the doggone pear tree at Christmastime, it’s OK! The salvation of your immortal soul doesn’t depend on the acquisition of a lot of information. What it all comes down to, according to Jesus, is really quite simple: "Love God, and love one another." If we do that the rest of the details will take care of themselves. Now I don't mean to diss the catechetical ministry, learning about one’s religion or studying theology. It certainly has been an important part of my life and a necessity for priesthood. Education is helpful in every walk of life and religious education enriches us for the tasks of our lives by enlarging our understanding. Learning feeds the heart and soul as well as the mind, which in turn then equips us for the task of loving. It’s all good. But nobody flunks Christianity 101 by not being able to list all 20 mysteries of the Rosary on short notice. Religion isn’t a memory game or a final exam. There’s no data

retrieval. Just check Matthew 25. By the time we get to Judgment Day, I’m afraid we’ll discover our work is already handed in. And the work, as it happens, exclusively involves how much and in how many ways we’ve shared our love. Jesus wasn’t tossing a curve to the scholar who questions him in today’s gospel. The law of God was always about love. These "new" commandments merely summarize and abbreviate all that’s gone before. John’s gospel even brings it down to the one commandment: "Love one another." He’s not eliminating the obligation to love God, but acknowledging that the way God wants to be loved is through our care for each other. There’s really no room for hate in this world. There’s no room for indifference to the plight of anyone, no matter how different or far away. We are only all too aware of just how small our planet really is. And if this is so, then how much more must we turn our hearts to those closest to us: spouses, family members, fellow parishioners, neighbors, coworkers, fellow citizens and resident non citizens. The only reason we’re here is to love one another. Maybe it’s time we get to it. Today is recognized as "World Mission Sunday" by the universal Church. The second collection at today’s Masses is for the Propagation of the Faith to help in more than 1,150 dioceses throughout the world in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific Islands. Your generosity is much appreciated. Please remember to take home a copy of the bulletin when you leave Mass today. There are many items of interest and invitation with something for everyone. Of special note is an order form for "Backwards Money Drawing" tickets, ticket sale info for the November "Fall Fling Party," news and needs from Parish Social Ministry, the upcoming All Souls Remembrance Mass and Novena of Masses, info from Religious Education and the Principal's Corner from St. Raymond’s School, the latest Catholic Ministries Appeal update and much more. To keep informed, keep a copy of the bulletin at home each week for quick and easy reference. Have a great week. Smile, share, love one another and may the power of the Holy Spirit come upon our youth in the Sacrament of Confirmation this coming Wednesday. God bless always. Father Chuck

Mission News

Traveling to Guatemala on the St Raymond's Mission Awareness Trip is an experience that is impossible to fully explain. Yes I can share stories, show pictures, give gifts but the experience is unique in many ways. My first trip with Deacon Rich to Guatemala was 9 years ago. I was in High School and I

truly believe that my first 3 trips helped me become an adult and the person I am today. It is so frustrating to never be able to explain the love and caring of the Guatemalan people to my family and to have them be unable to understand this aspect of my life. Two years ago my mother and brother made the journey with me. Ever since then I feel like my family has grown stronger and they share that part of my life. This year I was joined by my two cousins, Jeanette and Colleen. To be able to share my Guatemalan family (and I do consider them my family) with my cousins was amazing. I feel like they now know me so much more because they know what I know about love, giving, sharing and coming together to make the world a better place. Some people, even in my own family, question why I go to Guatemala to help the people there. It pains me to think that they might never know why. I help them because they are people and no matter what culture or country they come from, they deserve an education, clean clothes, food, medicine and most of all to be loved. I go there to help them but I leave feeling like I am the one who has been given a gift, because I have learned so much from them. You might never make the journey to Guatemala but the experience of sponsoring a child is an unexplainable joy as well. My family has sponsored 6 children and each relationship has taught me so much about life, love and myself. I have seen my first sponsored child graduate from High School, get a job and become a man. I promise that if you get involved in the Project you will change lives; the Guatemalan children and your own. -- Dan Rivenburgh There are children waiting to be sponsored at $20 per month. If interested please call the rectory.

ALL SOULS DAY

"Mass of Remembrance"

Wednesday, November 2nd is the Feast of all Souls. Once again we will remember all parishioners who have died and been buried from St. Raymond Parish during the past year. The Mass of Remembrance will be at 7:30 p.m. on November 2nd in the Church. Members and their families have been invited to join us in this loving and faith-filled remembrance. The names of all the departed from the past year will be read in prayerful reflection as the Communion Meditation of the Mass and also listed on the Remembrance Scroll for the month of November. Afterwards, all are invited for some refreshments in the side sacristy. Let us join together on All Souls Day to celebrate your loved one’s new life in Christ Jesus as we support one another with our prayers and caring.

All SOULS NOVENA OF MASSES

November 2nd is the Feast of All Souls.

It is the day when the Church prayerfully remembers all the faithfully departed. A special way in which this is done is by celebrating a Novena of Masses for our beloved dead beginning on All Souls Day. It is a most fitting way to remember our departed, to pray for their eternal happiness and also to ask their intercession for our prayers. This novena continues for nine days. All Souls envelopes are available if you wish to have anyone included in this novena. They were mailed with the regular monthly envelope package and they can also be found on the back pew shelves and by the side doors of the Church Simply write the names you wish to remember, include your donation and place the envelope in one of the All Souls boxes located by the envelopes. Please do so by Wednesday, November 2nd. Thank you.

Unless you are attending the last Sunday Mass, there is still time to see the wonderful Off-Broadway showing of WEST SIDE STORY at the best price in town. Each year the Youth Group Production has been getting much deserved rave reviews from those who have seen these great neighborhood shows. Unless you have seen them, you cannot imagine how accomplished are these young actors and actresses, who are students here at St. Raymond's and neighboring High Schools.

These productions are truly a result of family and community. Alumni of St. Raymond’s school and now parents of students in the play constructed the sets. Our very own Art Club members, most of them seniors, painted those sets. There are the parents and friends who take care of costumes, props and other incidentals. There are the sponsors who place ads for the program and this year some very generous sponsors who donated the funds to hire a professional orchestra. There are the Director and Producer who take as much interest in these plays as if they were to open on Broadway, and last but most importantly, there are the very special kids who put their hearts into every nuance of these awesome productions. All of these time, talent and energy consuming tasks that culminate in such fantastic productions are done voluntarily as an expression of love, friendship and family for our parish community. Don't miss your opportunity to enjoy this latest, terrific parish family event and to show your appreciation and support. You can still purchase your ticket at the door before the performance. You will be so glad you did!

St. Raymond Human Life Committee

“How long, O Lord? I cry for help but You do not listen!” (Habakkuk 1:2) This could be the voice of the child in her mother’s womb or the groan of the old man as he is given the extra shot of morphine to end his “inconvenient” life. It could be the fearful gasp of the executed prisoner, or the neglected and abused child put out on the street by his own parent. It is the voice of the voiceless and the

cry of the desperate. But we know the Lord hears the cry of the poor and comes to their aid. We are called to be the instruments of God’s work—His hands of outreach; His help to all in need. The Prophets, the Apostles, and the martyrs were men and women just like us. Through the grace of God and their openness to His Will, they changed the world. Are we willing to experience inconvenience, or even to suffer hardship, so that a baby might live? In this third week of “Respect Life Month,” let us pray that like the Good Samaritan, we might seek ways to serve the weakest and most forgotten, and preserve the life of those threatened by the violence of abortion, abuse, selfishness or neglect.

Sodality of Our Lady

“Our Lady Queen of the Rosary, pray for us”

The Sodality of Our Lady extends their gratitude to Lorraine Guerin for chairing our wonderful Annual Communion Brunch last week. Lorraine’s dedication and tireless work made it a very special event. Thank you also to Lorraine’s team of “angels,” Martha Ahrens and Hope Kostyra. It was a wonderful event which was dedicated in memory of Past Prefect, Muriel Henry.

Coming Up: Christmas Fair on Saturday, Nov. 12th 10:00am – 3:30pm in the school cafeteria.

This year’s Christmas Fair promises to be better than ever! No vendors, just an old fashioned fair with home-made baked goods and hand-crafted treasures that will make wonderful Christmas gifts. There will be pictures with Santa (11:30-1:30pm), sweepstakes, raffles, stocking-stuffers galore and who knows what hidden gem you will find at the Trinkets and Treasures booth! Plan on staying for lunch at the Country Kitchen where our home made chili and hot dogs can’t be beat! Please call Chairlady Gerry Moseman at 599-5459 or Loretta Broughal, at 887-1048 if you have any questions or donations. If you have any items for the Handmade Booth, please call Anne Dunn at 593-5503 or Debbie Simeti at 596-1332, they will arrange for a pick up. Thank you to Anne, Debbie and all the crafters who have been working all year on their beautiful creations which they so generously donate to the Handmade Booth. Thank you for your support and generosity!

Principal’s Corner

The weather wasn’t too cooperative for our parade, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of our students and staff last week for National Hat Day. They proudly wore their favorite head covering for the entire day (except for some of the “older” members of our school family who found them to be too warm),

raising a grand total of $396! We happily sent the check off to the Heavenly Hats Foundation once again pleased with the generosity of our school families. This is definitely the week for all of us to “put on a happy face” as it is PICTURE DAY. These, of course, are our school pictures and are done in the school uniform (either the summer or traditional one). This year we’re beginning with our group shots on Monday morning, the 24th. Individual photos will be taken at the end of the week on Friday, the 28th. Our fifth graders are busy preparing for our annual PARADE OF SAINTS for the school Mass on Tuesday, the 25th at 8:45am. They work very hard gathering information about each of the saints that they represent – and getting dressed appropriately. If you have the time, you may like to join us for this special event. Please note that the school will be dismissed at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, the 26th as our parish celebrates the sacrament of Confirmation. Please make the necessary arrangements for our children. Our eighth graders are anxiously awaiting the end of this week as they will be taking the Catholic High Schools’ Entrance Test on Saturday. They have been preparing for this important day for a long time and hopefully will do quite well. However, it never hurts to ask for the Lord’s special blessing during the testing. Could you please whisper a little prayer for all of the young people who will be taking the entrance test over the next two weeks? I’m sure they would appreciate it. Let’s look at the upcoming week:

Congratulations to the Apice Family for winning the September’s TUITION RAFFLE! I don’t want to confuse anyone, but I would like to remind our St. Raymond School Family that there will be no school on Monday, October 31st or Tuesday, November 1st. Please be sure to check your calendars. I will share more about this in next week’s bulletin.

Religious Education

God is good—all the time!

This coming week, on Wednesday, Oct. 26th at 11am and 2:30pm, our Confirmation candidates celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation with Bishop Peter Libasci, and with their families and sponsors who represent our parish community. We pray that the Holy Spirit will renew their live, strengthen their relationships with God, and guide them onward in their faith journeys. We are also happy to announce that the following people will be receiving service awards on Tuesday, Oct. 25th at St. Agnes Cathedral:

Mrs. Catherine Collins, Mrs. Jane Donlon, Mrs. Julianne Grennen, Mrs. Theresa Leonetti, Mrs. Noreen Costello, Deacon Richard LaRossa,

Mrs. Lynn Cavallero, Mrs. Marion O’Hara, Mrs. Lucy Ostermann, Mr. Dennis Ostermann,

Mrs. Karen Reilly, Mr. John Reilly, Mrs. Adrienne Stender, Mrs. Evelyn Contaldi.

God has truly blessed the parish of St. Raymond with so many people who continue to dedicate their time and talents to the children and people of our community.

Important Reminder: Our Christmas Pageant Rehearsals ware in full swing. All Choir people are asked to be at their rehearsal on Wednesday at 5:00pm and all Play people should attend their rehearsals on Thursday at the same time.

YOUth Group

After a BIG opening weekend the YOUth Group is looking forward to a second. The audience saw a professional production of WEST SIDE STORY. What was not seen was what goes on backstage. Before each performance, the cast and crew pray together. Our Lord is included in what we do. Here is the opening prayer given by one of our cast, Kaitlyn O'Connor, the night of our final dress rehearsaL... I remember the first time I walked through those auditorium doors, I knew no one, other than the girl standing next to me. At that time I didn't know that the people I was about to meet would end up being a family to me. I look forward to rehearsals and knowing that tomorrow is the show and I only wish that we had more time together. I look at everyone of you as my friend and family member and one of the reasons I love coming here is because I don't have to worry about being judged or trying to impress someone. Everyone is so accepting of each other, which I find incredible because of how many people are a part of this. The memories I've shared with everyone are unforgettable and I love everyone of you. Each person in this room is incredibly talented, but when you put us all together you get something that is truly magical. We've gotten everything we could have: amazing direction, choreography, music, costumes, sets and now it's up to us. I love performing but performing with all of you is something that I cherish and I know that I will never forget the friendships I have had with you. So I want to say to everyone "Break-a leg" tonight, tomorrow and every other performance we have together. God has blessed us having each other so now lets thank Him by saying, Our Father …”

IRA Charitable Rollover

You can make a gift from your Individual Retirement Account to our Parish before December 31, 2011. You must be over 70 and use a traditional IRA. You will not have to report your gift as income—it will be income tax-free, and it will count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD) The best way for your to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a “qualified charitable distribution.” In most cases you will only have to fill out a simple form. Your gift must go directly from you IRA to our parish. If you receive the money first then you’ll be taxed on it like any other distribution.

Diocesan Pilgrimage 50th Eucharistic Congress Dublin, Ireland June 4th-13th, 2012

The Diocese of Rockville Centre is sponsoring a pilgrimage to the 50th Eucharistic Congress which will be held in Dublin, Ireland under the leadership of Bishop John C. Dunne, auxiliary Bishop of our Diocese. The dates are June 4th - 13th, 2012. Msgr. Jim McNamara, pastor at Holy Cross Church in Nesconset, is coordinating the pilgrimage events. This pilgrimage is open to everyone. Our pilgrimage will begin with some touring in the western part of Ireland and will end with the first three days of the Eucharistic Congress. Since Bishop Dunne's parents came from Castlebar, we are designing this pilgrimage around his family roots in the west of Ireland. This will enable us to visit some well-known sites (like the Cliffs of Moher and Kylemore Abbey) but also to take advantage of local places of interest that will introduce us to the richness of Irish culture and heritage. We will celebrate Mass each day including Mass at the Cathedral in Tuam as well as at Knock. This pilgrimage begins on Monday, June 4, 2012 with a flight from JFK airport to Shannon airport. After some relaxing days in the west of Ireland and a memorable visit to the shrine of Our Lady of Knock, the highlight of the pilgrimage will be the beginning of the Eucharistic Congress on Sunday, June 10th with the opening Mass. The theme of the day on Monday is exploring and celebrating our Communion through the Sacrament of Baptism. Tuesday’s theme will be exploring and celebrating the Communion of Marriage and Family. We chose these days of the Congress because these themes are rich in meaning for living the Christian life. Unless you wish to stay longer, our pilgrimage group will return to JFK airport in New York from Dublin on Wednesday, June 13th. There will also be an option to come for only the Eucharistic Congress portion in Dublin (departure from JFK on June 9th) and then go off on your own to visit relatives or explore Ireland. Travel arrangements are being made through 206 Tours in Hauppauge. If you wish to have a brochure sent to you, call Eva at 206 Tours at 631-361-4644 or [email protected].

Please Help Us Reach Our Goal

Our goal this year is $95,960. As of September 14th we have received $77,916 in pledges and gifts from 364 individual donors. We are still hoping to hear from over 3,000 remaining registered families. All gifts, large and small, are much appreciated. Please keep in mind that all the money received goes directly to support the basic five components of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. They are Catholic Charities, Pastoral Outreach, Formation, Education and Parish Sharing through the rebate. You can see on this page a chart on how the rebate works and how much St. Raymond’s would receive the more successful we are. It really comes down to the fact that in helping others through the many ministries, services and programs that the Catholic Ministries Appeal supports, we are also helping ourselves. The better we do for the appeal, the better we do for St. Raymond’s Please, prayerfully consider making a pledge or gift and thanks to all who are supportive of the Catholic Ministries Appeal and St. Raymond’s Parish.
