Fourth Sunday of Lent March 30-31, 2019

The rosary is recited every morning before the 9am Mass. Please join us.

A Note from Our Pastor,

This weekend is what is called Laetare Sunday, a Sunday of being glad. Why? Well, because we have passed the halfway point of Lent and are well on our way to the joy of Easter. Prepa-

ration for the reception of the Easter sacraments is ramping up for Amalia, Lily, and Scott. They will be present with us again this week and next at the 10:30 Mass for what are called the Scrutinies where they commit themselves public-ly to turn away from anything contrary to Christ and His Gospel, and pledge to open themselves to the loving mercy, grace, and strength that Christ offers them in and through the Catholic Church. Please keep them in your prayers.

Also this Sunday at 1:30pm in our Chapel the Credo Litur-gical Dance Company is celebrating its 40th Anniversary by performing some of its most memorable pieces, fol-lowed by the Tenebrae Service “Were You There?” All are most warmly invited to attend.

From 6 until 6:45pm we’ll have our second of two eve-nings dedicated to the Examen Prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Fr. Patrick Nolan, SJ, from Boston College High School will guide us this week. A number of folks took part last Sunday in the presentation of Fr. Bill Neubecker, OMV, on this same beautiful prayer form. Even if you were unable to attend last week, you are certainly welcome to this week’s presentation.

Our High School Youth Group is meeting from 6 until 8pm this Sunday in the Gathering Space. While there will certainly be prayer and a presentation on an interesting topic, you just never know what other wild and crazy ac-tivities our Youth Minister Helen Bornhorst has planned for this evening!

Our monthly Nocturnal Adoration and Rosary takes place this Tuesday evening April 2 from 7 to 8pm.

I’m sorry that I’ll be absent from our monthly Coffee, Doughnuts, and Conversation this coming Wednesday April 3rd after the 2 morning Masses. Right after the 7am Mass here I’ll be traveling with teachers and students of our 7th grade at St. Agatha School to Watertown for the daily TV Mass on CatholicTV. Even though the TV Mass isn’t until 9:30am, many of you know how wild Boston traffic can be that hour in the morning, and obviously we can’t be late! So, feel free to tune in for the Mass as it is happening at 9:30am, or at 7 or 11:30 pm for the rebroad-cast. Some of our students will be altar servers and read-ers, and since we have limited time for the Mass, I won’t be as longwinded as I am here at St. Agatha’s!

Of course, the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is available in the Reconciliation Room in the Chapel Wednesday evening from 6:30–8pm for the remainder of

Lent, and Stations of the Cross are prayed on Friday at 3pm in the Upper Church.

For a whole load of fun, be sure to get tickets to “Madagascar, Jr.” presented by the students of St. Agatha School this Friday and Saturday April 5th and 6th at 7pm, and Sunday April 7th at 2pm at Fontbonne Auditorium.

Looking ahead, we’ll be having our parish’s Liturgical Ministry Fair in the Gathering Space after all the Masses next weekend (except the 5pm). This is a great opportunity to learn from folks about their specific liturgical ministries and to take the plunge and sign up for one of the ministries yourself.

Also next weekend two of our younger parishioners worked hard to secure a grant to support their service pro-ject: “Socks for Soldiers.” Our parish is invited to partici-pate by donating new adult-sized socks in the drop box in the rear of the Church. The donated socks will be sent to the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans and the Home Base Recovery Program for Veterans in Boston. What a wonderful opportunity to aid and thank these cou-rageous veterans for their service to our country!

Finally, be sure to mark Sunday April 7th in your calendars for the annual NPH Irish Hearts for Orphans Dance and Fundraiser from 2 until 7pm at the Boston Marriott in Quincy. There will be great music, dancing, and wonderful prizes raffled and auctioned off!

Have a blessed week, and be glad!

Fr. Palardy

Credo Liturgical Dance Company Celebrates its 40th Anniversary

This Sunday, March 31 at 1:30 pm in the Chapel, the Credo Liturgical Dance Com-pany will be presenting a sample of their favorites followed by a final offering of their

Tenebrae Service “Were You There?”

This interpretation takes the observer into the shadows with the passion and death of Jesus. It is a dramatic nar-ration in which each dancer takes turns symbolizing in movement the betrayer and betrayed, interspersed with intervals of prayer, incorporating the observer into the events unfolding before them. Please join us.

THE WEEKLY UPDATE

THEME: God wants us to come back. Now is the time to reconcile.

As you hear this reading, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart?

Gospel : Luke 15:1-3, 11-32

Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, say-ing, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

So to them Jesus addressed this parable: “A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father, ‘Father give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’ So the father divided the property between them. After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation. When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need. So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens who sent him to his farm to tend the swine. And he longed to eat his fill of the pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any. Coming to his senses he thought, ‘How many of my fa-ther’s hired workers have more than enough food to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger. I shall get up and go to my father and I shall say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your hired workers.” So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son.’ But his father ordered his servants, ‘Quickly bring the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’ Then the celebration began. Now the older son had been out in the field and, on his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean. The servant said to him, ‘Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ He became angry, and when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him. He said to his father in reply, ‘Look, all these years I served you and not once did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on with my friends. But when your son returns who swallowed up your property with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.’ He said to him, ‘My son, you are here with me always; every-thing I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.”

Pastoral Planning March 31 ~ Fourth Sunday of Lent “A man had two sons…”—so begins today’s Gospel para-ble. Take some time this week to consider where are you in the story. Are you the younger son or daughter, who just wants to get away from home, but soon realizes that home is where you are loved unconditionally? Are you the disgruntled older sibling—faithful, but bitter? Are you the parent, who looked out every day, hoping for the return of your beloved child? This parable reminds us of the importance of forgiveness of self and of others, and more importantly to be open to God’s mercy and forgiveness.

Last Thursday Fr. Palardy, Deacon Dan Sullivan, Fr. Pat and I attended at workshop at St. Peter’s in Dorchester sponsored by the Archdiocese and conducted by a compa-ny called Ratio Risk Services entitled Parish Safety & Se-curity. It was extremely well done and very informative, and provided concrete suggestions for addressing safety issues, particularly in churches. For instance, they stressed the 4 L’s when it comes to an emergency situation involv-ing an intruder:

1. Locate—identify the situation and make appropriate notifications, especially 911;

2. Lockdown;

3. Leave—if possible leave the area quickly;

4. Live—take action to save your own life.

While it is certainly sad that we need to consider such things, thinking and planning proactively is the prudent course of action. They strongly recommended that each parish take four specific steps:

1. Create a Safety Committee;

2. Conduct a Safety Assessment;

3. Develop and Document the plan;

4. Train, Reassess, Train Again.

So our first step is to establish a Safety Committee. We’re looking for volunteers who work in the fields of medicine, law enforcement, fire safety, emergency medical services, risk management and social work or psychology. If you have a background in any of these areas, or feel that you would like to supplement the committee with your skills in another area please give me a call or send an email to [email protected].

http://www.facebook.com/stagathaparishmiltonquincy March 30-31, 2019

Once I served as a co-teacher for 2nd grade. My colleague thrust a Bible in my hand and asked me to read the story of the prodigal son. As I finished, a little hand was waving wildly. I asked, “Suzi, do you have a question about the story?” To which came the question, “What does debauch-ery mean?” The translation I used apparently said “debauchery!” Picking up my jaw from the floor, I mut-tered some answer about too much candy!

Jesus, who comes to reveal the love of the Father, does so with a powerful parable—a parable of three hearts. The heart of the prodigal son; the heart of the elder son; and the heart of the Father.

the brother who was lost—heartlessly demands his inheritance. In this instance the son’s request says the father is dead to him. The son departs from his father's house; squanders everything looking for happiness; and in his darkness even forgets his great dignity. He is nostalgic for his own home; finds courage to go back; and, discovers the father's welcome.

the brother who stayed at home—with a cold heart rebukes his younger brother for his dissolute wander-ings and he rebukes his father for welcoming the prod-igal son home!

The waiting, watching Father—“while the son was a long way off” the father runs to meet him; embraces him; and offers the gift of full reconciliation—a heart of forgiveness and love.

Our culture is one that moves fast and is full of distraction. We can get swept away in the currents of busyness. Our Father, always moves toward us, holds out his hand, embraces us with profound kindness, steadfast love, and compassion. He runs to meet us! Always!

Lent is a time of conversion. Conversion leads us to:

Prioritize our lives by fasting from those things which distract us from God and impinges on our rela-tionship with Him and others;

Purify our hearts to love God more completely. In loving God—all of our other relationships are strengthened;

View ourselves through God’s eyes and discover our great dignity. You are God’s beloved;

Celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation—where we encounter the heart of mercy. Reconciliation moves us from dwelling on our weaknesses to being embraced and forgiven by Christ.

Thank you for being here today. God loves you!
