Please Pray for the Sick

A Message from Father Brian ~ While on retreat about a month ago, I spent some time with a short but beautifully written book called The Way of Silence by a Brother David Steindal-Rast, a Benedictine monk living on the west coast. One of the sections of the book that grabbed my attention (and has spurred even more thinking these past weeks) had to do with the prac-tice of gratitude. I’d be surprised if most of you have not noticed that a small army of authors, speakers, bloggers, self-help gurus, psychologists, and professional religious people have latched onto the idea of thankfulness as a foundational attitude for living a healthy, happy life. Their contention—largely correct, I believe—is that when a human being becomes increasingly aware of the myriad ways in which he or she is blessed on a daily basis, that realization helps to create a state of mind that almost in-variably leads to greater serenity, contentment, and peace. It can also go a long way toward warding off the despondency, listlessness, cynicism and loneliness that so many people contend with. Steindl-Rast’s book is at times rather lofty in its language and ideas, but one suggestion he made more than once caught my imagination—partly because it’s just so practi-cal and down-to-earth. He explained that for years now, before going to bed, he pulls out a calendar and jots down ONE THING from the day that’s just ending for which he feels grateful. He suggested that one need not be flowery or especially “deep” in selecting that one thing . . . what he scribbles before bed can be (and often is) as simple and mundane as a good bowl of oatmeal on a cold morning, a car that started, a note from a friend, or a ladybug crawling across his window. I was intrigued. Often enough, when I take time to give thanks, I try valiantly to gather together every significant aspect of life I can manage to think of—the Catholic faith into which I was baptized, my priesthood, my relation-ships with family, friends, and brother priests, the staff, employees, and parishioners here at St. Lawrence, my health, clothing, food, home . . . in other words, the “big stuff.” Seldom would I take a moment to thank God for a hot shower, or a bit of quiet before the day begins, or a perfect red maple leaf that catches my eye on the lawn. But gratitude for the “small stuff” is just as lifegiving as gratitude for the windfall-sized blessings that come to us only occasionally. I think the trick is to learn how to grow in thankfulness for every little speck of life—every crumb. God is the Giver of it all, not just the winning-lottery-ticket-blessings that are obviously so rare, but for the subtle grace of someone greeting us with a smile, or

the delight of watching a black-capped chickadee flitting around a birdfeeder in mid-November. It’s all the handiwork of the One who is Perfect Love, wrapped up in even the smallest and least conspicuous of packages. I hope that these few days leading up to our annual celebration of Thanksgiving are ones in which you have time to examine your life in a reflective, unhurried way, and to recognize the hints of grace all around you. Of course, it shouldn’t take a national holiday to cultivate in us that all-important frame of mind. But it’s a good place to start. Happy Thanksgiving to you, and to all those you love. May our brother and patron, St. Lawrence, pray for us. God love you!

Remembering Our Departed Loved Ones

Pray With Us Thanksgiving Day

Our annual celebration of Thanksgiving is one of our nationʹs most treasured holidays, and a perfect oppor-tunity to take stock of the countless blessings God has lavished on us as individuals, as families, as a parish, and as a nation.

Join us for a festive Thanksgiving Mass at 9:30 Thanksgiving morning. The liturgy will feature our Music Ministry. Begin your dayʹs celebration in the best possible way! To participate as fully as possible in the Mass, please be aware of the following:

• At the end of the Mass, we will bless small loaves of bread. Each individual or family will be invited to take one home for their Thanksgiving table, as a reminder that all we have is a blessing from God.

• All are asked to bring non-perishable food items to

church, and to leave them by the doors for our food pantry. A collection will also be taken up during the Mass, to further support the efforts of our Parish Outreach.

ST. LAWRENCE CHRISTMAS ANGEL GIFTS

FOR THOSE IN NEED Please share your blessings by helping our Parish Out-reach make Christmas merry for our less fortunate children and adults. For many, your contribution will be the only gift they will receive.

Here’s how you can celebrate this “Season Of Giving”:

Choose an “Angel” or two from one of the baskets by the doors of the Church.

Purchase and Wrap the gift named on your “Angel and attach the “Angel” to your gift.

Return your gift to the Outreach Office no later than Friday, December 14th. Wrapped gifts may also be left in the back of the church. Gift Cards, Cash and Checks MUST be placed in Santa’s North Pole Mailbox which is located in the center aisle at the rear of the church.

*REMEMBER* All items MUST be returned by Friday, December 14th. (Any items arriving after that date, may not get to the intended family!)

WHITE ANGELS = Special Gift Requests GREEN ANGELS = Requests for assistance provid-ed through Outreach for fuel, gas, household items, etc.

“BITS & PIECESʺ Two practical items weʹd like everyone to be aware of:

1. The bathroom on the first floor of the school building has just recently been renovated (and not a moment too soon!). This most definitely a collaborative project, and thanks go to Maurice, of Bosco Contracting, for his help in replacing ceiling tiles, stalls, and painting of the walls. Joe Neugebauer, of Joe Neugebauer Plumbing for his help with replacing the sinks, faucets, and toilets. Steve Ferrara, of S.A.F.E. Electric for his help in installing new light-ing. Matt Cohen from our own maintenance staff for giving the space a good cleaning when the work was com-plete. And Chris Koch, our Business and Facilities Manager, for coordinating the whole project. Take a peek next time youʹre in the school--itʹs a very welcome change!

2. Weʹve recently changed our telephone and internet provider, and in the process added the capacity or WiFi service in the school building and the Bethany Center. (The signal does also extend into the church, but not strongly.) Look for signs in the school and Bethany Center to provide directions for how to sign on--depending on whether you are already an Optimum cus-tomer or not.

Saint Lawrence Parish-Wide FORMED Study

PRESENCE: The Mystery of the Eucharist A powerful 3-part series about Christ’s real presence

in the Eucharist.

We invite parishioners to consider opening their home to a small group of fellow parishioners for three weeks to view Presence together and to discuss each episode and how it touched hearts. The only requirement for this study is that the host be registered on FORMED and have a laptop/computer or can stream FORMED on their smart T.V. so that participants may view the episodes. Study guides may be found on the FORMED website. Hosts do not have to be trained in group facilitating or have a background in theology. Any questions that arise from the discussions can be directed to the Rectory or Faith Formation Offices. Hospitality, while always appreciated is optional and at the discretion of the host.

If you would like to be a host for a small discussion group, please add your information on the sign-up sheet in the rear of the Church. Be prepared to note your name, address, telephone # and/or e-mail address, the day/time of the study, and how many people you would like to have in the group. After we have a number of hosts, we will place sign-up sheets in the rear of the Church with group information so that fel-low parishioners may sign-up for a particular study group.
