A Christmas Message from the Pastor

A parishioner told me a week ago that Christmas lights were going up everywhere, and she wondered if there would be more than ever this year — people seeking light in the darkness. It would be neat to check this out from the vantage of Santa Claus’ sleigh as he comes down the Hudson Valley, soars over High Tor, and swoops down over the villages that make up the parish of St. Paul & St. Ann — Congers, Valley Co age, and the Nyacks. Yes, I’m sure we’d see millions of lights — ny sparks of red and green and white from houses and yards, stores and streets, all illumina ng the December night, the darkest me of the year. You know why we do this. It’s in celebra on of the birth of Jesus, the “Light who shines in the darkness, and the darkness grasped it not,” who because of His great love for us came to be born among us to save, to heal, and to bring us to Himself. This Christmas I want you to know that I’ll always cherish the memories of this year. Not the bad parts, obviously, but the many ways you have been lights in the darkness for me. You wanted to worship and you needed the sacraments, and we who have been ordained to bring you these things needed your help to provide them. And with resourcefulness, generosity, and kindness you helped the work of God to go on in these troubled mes, finding new ways to do nearly everything we had become so familiar with, and staying brave and loving and being especially charitable toward others in the example of Christ. Christmas always comes, no ma er how dark the mes. God bless you always, and may you and your families have a very, Merry Christmas!

Are You “SURE” You’re a Registered Parishioner? Many times we meet people at church who attend mass, take part in events, or perhaps even have received their sacraments here. We’re so very glad you’re with us and part of our community. But that alone does not make you a parishioner. To be a member of the parish you have to REGISTER. Registering is very easy. You can register online at spasaparish.org or at the parish office. It only takes a few minutes. Everyone over the age of 18 is encouraged to register. Even if you’re an adult who received all your sacraments here as a child and still attend mass here, you need to register. Why register? First and foremost, it’s very important to register so we can serve your needs when, for example, you need a sponsor certification letter for Baptism or Confirmation. Also, to receive an acknowledgment of your donations for your income tax filing, you need to be registered so we have an official record of your giving over the year. So, please join us officially and register with the parish so we can meet all your needs now and in the future!

Mass Intentions When we face the death of someone, even a person who is not Catholic, to have a Mass offered for the repose of his or her soul and to offer our prayers are more beneficial and com-forting than any sympathy card or flower arrangement. To have a Mass offered for a birthday, anniversary, or special need is appropriate, beneficial, and appreciated. "Changing"

O nly if people change will the world change; and in order to change, people need the light that comes from God, the light which so unexpectedly [on the night of Christmas] entered into our night.

    — Pope Benedict XVI, Christmas Homily Dec. 25, 2008

Christmas flower donation envelopes are available in our church and in your monthly donation packet. Please make your offering in honor or in memory of someone. We will remember each person and YOU in special way in all our

    Masses during Christmas time.

    Merry Christmas!

YOUR CHRISTMAS GIFT TO OUR PARISH Many of you have made it your custom to make a special offering to the Church at Christmas time. We’d like to encourage you to remember St. Paul & St. Ann’s in your Christmas giving, especially this year. As our financial report published two weeks ago showed, because of the pandemic, our income fell short of our expenses by about $37,000. The good news is that this situation will not go on forever. Hopefully, it will be over soon. And the very good news is that so many of you have managed to keep up with your weekly donations in spite of everything or have sacrificed to give what you could in hard financial times. Thank you for this! Your donations and in-volvement have kept our parish going! And that’s not saying enough: Because of your loyalty, in many ways St. Paul & St. Ann’s is thriving. What’s important is what comes next. There will be challenges as we start to recover from what we’ve been through. If you’re anything like me, you can’t wait to get going when it’s finally safe! We need to restore all our liturgies, restart our religious ed pro-gram fully, reopen all our activities and maybe start some new ones that we’ve always dreamed about! We had just started rebuilding our liturgical ministry with so many volunteers joining up when the coro-navirus hit. We have a “new church” at St. Paul’s! There will be so much to do! However, you know from your own experience, money will be needed in many ways. And if we’re starting out with one foot already in a deficit, it will only hobble our efforts. So please be generous to our parish this Christmas. If you’ve fallen behind, please try to catch up a bit if you’re able. If you can manage your usual Christ-mas gift, it will be especially appreciated this year. If you can give more, that’s absolutely wonderful!! In His Wisdom, God has brought us here together and we pray that, under His guidance, we will help to make His Kingdom come.

May God be with you always, Fr. Vladimir

    FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

E very Advent I love to recall the story of the Winter Truce of 1914. World War I was now five months old and already there were a million lives lost. Under terrible fire from machine guns and rapid-fire ar llery, the armies had resorted to trench warfare. The deep defensive trenches stretched for miles from the North Sea and across Belgium and France. It was impossible for either side to advance. There was no end in sight.

    S lle Nacht

It was Christmas Eve – a moonlit night. As described in an ar -cle on the History Channel website, “All was jarringly quiet on the Western Front when a Bri sh sentry suddenly spied a glis-tening light on the German parapet, less than 100 yards away.” Through the tangle of barbed wire the sentry came to realize that what he was looking at was a sparkling Christmas tree. Soon a er “a whole string of small conifers glimmered like beads on a necklace atop the German trenches.”

The Bri sh soldiers then no ced the “rising of a faint sound that they had never heard before on a ba lefield – a Christmas carol. The German words to ‘S lle Nacht’ were not familiar, but the tune – ‘Silent Night’ – certainly was. When the German soldiers finished singing, their foes broke out in cheers. Used to returning fire, the Bri sh now replied in song with the Eng-lish version of the carol.”

Reaching across no-man’s land – “the killing fields between the trenches li ered with frozen corpses, eviscerated trees and deep craters” – came six verses of song conveying imagery of the peaceful newborn baby res ng on his mother’s breast with simple statements that reflect the profundity of his birth in Chris an doctrine; the third stanza meditates on the divinity of the Christ Child and the mystery of the Incarna on, while the fi h explores the work of God the Son which offers us salva-

    on from sin.

As the message of this song entered the hearts of the soldiers on both sides, it is small wonder as to what happened next. Cau ously, German and Bri sh soldiers approached each oth-er holding out tokens of chocolate, cigare es, and bo les of brandy, and showing off photos of their wives and children.

Bri sh Corporal John Ferguson wrote of the encounter be-tween his Seaforth Highlanders and the German forces: “We shook hands, wished each other a merry Christmas and were soon conversing as if we had known each other for years. Here we were laughing and cha ng with men who only a few hours before we were trying to kill!”

Whether it be on the ba lefields of 1914 France or on the ba lefields of our compromised twenty-first century lives, Christ con nues to be the Prince of Peace and he is only a song away. And that is a proven fact.

“For every boot that tramped in ba le, every cloak rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for flames. For a child is born to us, a son is given us; upon his shoulder dominion rests. They name him Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. His dominion is vast and forever peaceful, from David’s throne, and over his kingdom, which he confirms and sustains by judgement and jus ce, both now and forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this!” (Isaiah 9:4-8)

Paul says in his le er to the Philippians: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and pe on, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that sur-passes all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (4:4-7)
