Dear Parishioners,
Peace in the Lord. This week (September 14) the Church celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross – our parish feast day. Normally we would celebrate it with a festive, bi-lingual Mass on Sunday and afterward sit down for a chicken barbecue. Because of Covid-19, we had to modify our celebration and distribution of the chicken meals. Regardless of the modifications, the day was beautiful in many respects: beautiful weather, many volunteers (I heard up to 75 persons), and we sold out – 1,500 meals. Much effort went into the day – I commend, above all, the fundraising committee and parish staff (about 30 persons) for their careful planning and execution. We had more volunteers than ever in planning, setting up, cooking, serving, and cleaning. New friendships were formed. People worked together and laughed together. The support of parishioners, donors, and the public at large has contributed much to the success of the day. As important as fundraising is (the parish truly does need the extra funds), events like Sunday are really about bridge-building, friendship, collaboration, and sacrifice for a greater good. In this perspective, we are all beneficiaries. The Cross is a symbol of victory because Christ first embraced it for all of humanity and transformed its terror and ugliness into a symbol of love, mercy, unity, and new and eternal life. The Cross has no meaning without Christ. The Cross has no meaning for us until we embrace it and follow Christ. Sunday’s celebration and all the effort that went into it is an example of this. On the Cross, Christ is known as pontifex (Latin for “bridge-builder”). In embracing the Cross, we, too, become “bridge-builders”: walking in solidarity, sacrificing for a greater good, bringing hope into the world, and embracing eternal life as we journey to the “house of the Father” (see John 14:1-6). This is the Father’s will for us through Jesus His Son. Jesus fully embraced this plan and asks us to do the same (see Matthew 16: 24; Mark 8:34-35; Luke 9:23 and 14:27).
On a sad note, September 16 is the second anniversary of the disappearance of Dulce Alavez, the five-year-old girl who went missing in Bridgeton. Although not in the headlines, the search continues for her. Let us pray for her, her family, and all law officers and volunteers who are actively searching for her. We cannot lose hope.
Fr. Matthew
Sharing of time, talent or treasure for the common good & the glory of God
“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all
and the servant of all.” - MARK 9:35
Jesus teaches His Stewards that they are called to love one another. Love involves sacrifice. Sacrifice is a word that many of us don’t like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.
September 11-12, 2021 Offertory Collection: $11,214.00
Online Giving: $990.00, $675.00 (Sept. 4-5) If you are going away this summer, you may give online to the parish, just go to our parish website homepage at www.parishholycross.org and click
on the “Donate” button and follow the instructions.
POPE FRANCIS FOOD PANTRY We had another successful donation drop off day on Saturday, September 11th. Thank you to all who took the time to stop by and drop off donations. Our donation drop off day is on the second Saturday of every month. Our Port Norris Pantry is open the second Saturday of every month and our Bridgeton Pantry is open the third Saturday of every month. As the holidays approach, in addition to asking for our normal non-perishable foods we would appreciate donations of gravy, instant mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and stuffing.
Disagreements are common in families. But what would you say if Jesus posed the same question “What are you arguing about?” Is it silly and petty? Is it an attempt to impose your will and control on another? Today Jesus tells us and his disciples to give it up. We are meant to serve each other, not control.

LA ESQUINA DEL PASTOR
Estimados Feligreses,
