Notes from the Editor

I’m sure most of you will agree that spring and summer are lovely times of the year with all the gardens in bloom. We’re lucky that here, in Osgodby, we have dedicated residents who are prepared

to give up their time (and money) to provide various planters around the village.

In the past we have attempted to brighten up the centre of the village by planting bulbs and bedding plants in planters on the Village Green. Sadly the planters have been damaged but are likely to be replaced in time for Spring 2018. So, if you’d like to sponsor a planter, please let me know.

We’ve had some comments regarding excessive speed along Mill Lane and Low Road; can residents please ensure that they adhere to the limits within the village and also be aware that we have children playing, horse riders and dog walkers who I am sure would appreciate your reduced speed.

Have a lovely summer!

Play Equipment

Just to remind residents that that Osgodby Village Hall has a blue token collection box in Tesco Market Rasen at the moment to raise money for new recreational equipment at the park and playing fields as part of Tesco's 'funding the community project'. Can we encourage everyone to ask for their token after shopping in store and to post it in the Osgodby Village Hall funding box by the

main entrance. The collection for this project is running until 30th June.

Thank you.

Village Hall Report

Since our last report we have held a “field day” to tidy up around the nature area and pond. We removed loose boarding and repaired some and trimmed back branches. Many thanks to those who turned up to held.

We are still hoping for grants for the play equipment. Jo Trafford, Bob Lawson, Sue Hurt and myself went to The Lincolnshire Showground in March to see if we had been successful in the Co-op Grant Application; everyone got to vote on the night and we came second in our section, so sadly didn’t get a grant. Most of the grants actually went to “wildlife” projects.

We are one of three groups in the Tesco “Bags of Help” at Market Rasen for May and June so when you shop in Tesco make sure you collect your blue token and pop it in the Osgodby section! If we win we will get a grant of £4,000, if not then we will get either £2,000 or £1,000.

We have also obtained a grant from West Lindsey District Council but this is match funding and we are still waiting to hear from Awards for All. We would like to try to complete the play area by the Autumn if possible.

The Summer Fete will take place on Saturday 10th June from 12 noon until 4 p.m.. Entries for the Dog Show start at 12 noon with the show starting at 1 p.m. Attractions include bouncy castle and slide, children’s entertainment, skittles, tombola, raffle, barbeque, craft stalls, refreshments, fairground organ, dog agility, dog search and rescue display, dancing by the children of Osgodby School and much more. Please support us, as the money raised will also go towards new play equipment. If anyone has any tombola and raffle prizes, books and cakes please see me at the Post Office; also help on the day would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Ann Bennett, Chair, Village Hall Committee

Horticultural Society

LIVES report

I am very pleased to report that we have two more trained First Responders active in and around our area, adding to the existing group of four: Lynsey Nichols is operating in the Osgodby area, and Debi Morris in the Tealby area. After gaining their qualification, both have successfully answered 999 calls.

I remember how nervous I felt (and sometimes still do) when I first responded to an emergency call, so I asked them both if they thought that the training they have received was adequate and appropriate. Both said that it was, and that the backup and support from the professionals has been first class, growing their confidence with every call. What First Responders do is essentially very simple. By arriving at a medical emergency early, we can start the response by following precisely the same basic procedures and protocols as the ambulance service. This means that, when the Ambulance Crew arrives they can take over knowing that the first steps will have been taken. It is literally as easy as A,B,C. (Airway, Breathing, Circulation), and, just like reciting the alphabet, you can’t go on to B until you have dealt with A, and you can’t deal with C until you have sorted out B. Once the immediate life threatening situation is dealt with we can make a start in finding out what is wrong. We do this by asking lots of questions, and making various observations such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, and many others. Again, these are all done in a set order so that the medical professionals can make a proper diagnosis a great deal earlier than they otherwise would have. We are not medical professionals, and so there are very clear limits to what we can and can’t do, but we take responding very seriously and try to maintain the highest standards.

As you can see it’s not quite first aid, though we can truss people up with the best of them! If you think you could be a First Responder please let Ann Bennett know. Oh yes, that was the other thing that both Lynsey and Debi agreed on, you get

terrific satisfaction from just helping people!

Kirkby Malham is lucky to have them and we hope that his replacement will be chosen soon. A congregation of 19 gave him a good send off at St Andrew’s on 21

st May at our fundraising service for Andy’s Children’s Hospice.

The church looked charming and all the volunteers who arrange the flowers, clean the brasses, make and serve the refreshments deserve a big thank you, as do Yvonne, Henry and Alan who clean the churches and tend the graveyards at St Andrew’s and St Peter’s. Sunday services are really happy occasions and it would be good to greet anyone new who would like to come along. At the annual Parochial Church Council AGM on 21 May Archie Dodds was confirmed as Secretary and Churchwarden and Charles Kenyon as Treasurer and Assistant Churchwarden. During the time there is no vicar, the Rural Dean Rev Stephen Johnson will oversee the parishes in the Kelsey Group. For church matters at St Andrew’s or St Peter’s please contact [email protected] or [email protected] in the first instance

From the Vicar:

Dear friends, not many parishioners will know that I came to look after the parishes temporarily in Sept 2014. I have got to know quite a few people in the villages which make up the Civil Parish of Osgodby through Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms and through the School.I am moving to a retirement job as Vicar of ONE church- St Michael the Archangel Kirkby in Malhamdale near Skipton. A very beautiful area and a Tourist hotspot. Before I came, the parishes of the former Kelsey Group were going to be split between Middle Rasen and Caistor. Bishop Christopher of Lincoln and the Archdeacon of Stow and Lindsey think this is a bad idea. They are keen that the post I have occupied temporarily should be advertised as a full-time-paid post (this will take a little time to sort out.) This is a great result and I hope that you will support your new Vicar when he or she is appointed. I also ask your support for your hard working Church Council. St Andrew's Kirkby cum Kingerby cum Osgodby is a beautiful building and it deserves better

support from the wider parish. I hope to hear that it goes from strength to strength. The other Church of England Church in your Parish ( which is a separate Ecclesiastical Parish) is the delightful little church at Usselby. Again there is a faithful team keeping your church open. They deserve your support as well. Finally, I am sad to report that the Rev'd Kenneth Saunders passed away in early May. He came to the Kelsey Group to serve the last five years of his ministry as Vicar of the Kelsey Group before retiring. He is fondly remembered as faithful Parish Priest and was a friend to all.

And the Churchwardens: Ken Saunders’ funeral was very well done in Dunholme – where there is a Vicar and three Curates for three churches! We remember Ken well, he was a lovely parson who believed kindness and human compassion was as least as important as theology. We are equally as sorry to say goodbye to Geoffrey and Cathy Spencer, they have only been with the Kelsey Group for two and a half years and made a great impression. Rev Geoffrey’s enthusiasm was infectious and he tried so hard to raise the church’s profile, very happy to change his services to suit individual churches in the Group.

In the Garden

On abundance Every summer on my lawn appears a single white ball about the size of a human head. It changes position from year to year, but there’s only ever one of them, like Tigger. It’s a giant puffball, Calvatia gigantea. Like all fungi it multiplies itself by spores, microscopic specks of DNA coding to make new giant puffballs. When mature, the ball dries up and blows in the wind, the spores puffing out like brown smoke. Now I haven’t counted them, but science has estimated that each ball houses several trillion spores. That’s right – several trillion. Remembering that a trillion is a one followed by twelve zeros, and that this fruiting body contains several of them, that’s a lot of potential puffballs. And how many actually become puffballs? Just one, followed by not even a single zero. Conclusion: giant puffballs are enthusiastically rubbish at reproduction.

This spring has been mostly dry and cold, with nasty north winds. And yet, undaunted, nature has pulled off its annual trick of abundance. The trees are green again, the garden has come to life, the birds are nesting.

In an essay entitled “Absence of Design in Nature”, written a century and a half ago, the naturalist Richard Jefferies wrote rhapsodically about all this.

“Without number, the buttercups crowd the mead: not one here and there, or sufficient only to tint the sward. There is not just enough for some purpose: there they are without number, in all the extravagance of uselessness and beauty. The apple-bloom – it is falling fast now as the days advance – who can count the myriad blossoms of the orchard? ... There is no enough in nature. It is one vast prodigality. It is a feast. There is no economy: it is all one immense extravagance.”

Amazing! But not quite unstoppable. Usually I hear my first cuckoo in the third week of May. When I didn’t, I got uneasy, and re-read Michael McCarthy’s

Page 8: The Parish Pumpparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Files/Parish/380/June_2017_final.pdf · p.m.. Entries for the Dog Show start at 12 noon with the show starting at 1 p.m. Attractions include

8 June 2017

wonderful book Say Goodbye to the Cuckoo. It’s a celebration of spring and the migrant birds that come back from Africa every year and what they have meant and mean to us. It’s a book full of joy with a twist at the end. This is what I read on the final page.

“Humanity’s long war of attrition against nature, its unending erosion of the abundance of nature’s pristine state, has taken species after species, flower after flower, forest after forest; and yet through indifference, or through ignorance, or through shifting the baseline, still we are able to comport ourselves as if the world were carrying on as it always has. But sooner or later the war of attrition had to come up against something fundamental. Forests perhaps we can regrow; tigers perhaps we can save in captivity; but how will we mend the loss of the spring-bringers? How could we restore their coming, once they go? And they are going, now.”

But not gone – yet. Yesterday I heard my cuckoo.
