After a rocky start David Mossop had fought back to be down seven at the break.

For set three Mossop would come in and give the Hacketts a long lunch break.

The move appeared to pay dividends immediately. After a dull first board played in four of a major for 450 in both rooms, the fireworks started.

It almost seems an act of hubris for the opponents to double you in game after your side has made two slam tries. For the contract to go two down seems most inappropriate, but that was what happened in the Closed Room. Tim Verbeek led a club against 5{x and the defenders cashed out. Nicely done – but not nearly enough, though it should have been.

In the Open Room Van den Bos heard his partner show diamonds but felt obligated to show an unbalanced hand with clubs, and then elected to defend rather than raise diamonds. He was right in theory, but wrong in practice. Still, I’m sure Joris van Lankveld would be kicking himself for missing the low trump lead (which looks the textbook play against an auction where you hold the balance of high cards). Had he done that, he would have got in with a diamond to play two more rounds of trumps. When he led the }K to trick one, declarer ruffed and ducked a diamond. He was now well placed to take his diamond ruff; he still would have had complete control, even if the defenders had played a forcing game. Instead, the defenders shifted to ace and a trump at trick three, but the 3-3 heart break left declarer in control. That all meant 10 IMPs to Mossop, instead of 9 IMPs the other way; Mossop led by 3 IMPs now.

Both tables played 4NT, Jones from the normal side, Van Lankveld from the advantageous side where his diamond holding was concealed. Hydes led a spade to trick one as North, as Molenaar had done from the South seat. Both declarers won the lead in East and took the finesse of ]Q. Now it was relatively easy for Verbeek to shift to a diamond, much harder for Hydes to find the killing defence. But both defenders passed the test with flying colours. Well done!

Jones received a trump lead. Verbeek as North won the [A and played a second trump. Declarer won in dummy and immediately ruffed a club to set up the suit, then ran the clubs. The defenders had two trumps and two diamonds and one trick at the end. That was a comfortable +110, but in the other room Mossop’s club lead gave declarer rather more of a challenge. Declarer won the ace and played ace and another heart. When Hydes won his king and played back a heart declarer felt forced to ruff high and play three rounds of clubs, pitching dummy’s last diamond on the third when South produced the 13th club.

Dummy was down to four spades and two hearts, and when South shifted to a low spade North could take his [J and [A and exit in diamonds. Declarer could take two trump tricks but South had the rest for down one.NETHERLANDS

Molenaar’s mini no-trump saw him play 2NT on a passive club lead. Jones won his king and returned the suit and Molenaar unblocked clubs then made the natural and fatal play of leading a low diamond to the king and ace – for which you surely cannot blame him. West won and shifted to [K. Declarer won and ducked a diamond to get the bad news. Jones took his {9, [Q, then played a heart, setting up the seventh winner for the defence.

Against 3{ Van den Bos led ]J in a brave attempt to pin North’s singleton. It didn’t help here, since after the club finesse lost, declarer ruffed the heart return and ducked a spade, then played on cross-ruff lines in the majors. He scored a spade and two ruffs, a heart and three ruffs plus a club. When East ruffed the third club at trick 11, declarer was left with the {Q10 for his ninth trick. Those 5 IMPs made it 52-40.

1NT 9-11 balanced

The closed room auction saw West show 9-11 and then when East suggested a reverse in the minors with extras, he went past 3NT, the critical decision. East could now use keycard and drive to slam.

In the open room the auction took a more traditional route, and West devalued his heart holding facing the known singleton. Might he have tried 4NT over 3[? Having gone down once this set in that contract, maybe that was enough reason to put on the brakes. Netherlands had 12 IMPs to level the match at 52-52. The unbiased press room was expecting a close match but the rest of the set, while not exclusively one-way traffic certainly showed the Mossop team in good luck and good form.

Mossop moved back in front by two overtrick IMPs on a quiet game, then pushed a hand where Jones/Paske needed to bring in 9842 facing AJ63 for one loser in 3NT, while Van Lankveld/Van den Bos needed to do the same in 3}, and the cards did not cooperate.

I’m not convinced 6[ is a great slam here. A bad break in diamonds or trumps may skittle it, and even then, an unlucky location of the trump honours might sink you. But today was emphatically not that day. Each declarer won the }A and cashed ]A to pitch the club loser, then sensibly finessed the [Q and cashed [A, before trying to ruff out the diamonds, to finish with 12 tricks. This line looks right, since leading a spade to the ten and jack early would force you to leave a trump out when setting up diamonds. Had the finesse of [Q lost, declarer would have needed to cross to {A and finesse the trump ten, then hope to find South with 3-3 in spades and diamonds. Those 13 IMPs were not unlucky for Mossop; the next deal saw a very similar conclusion, but on this occasion, there was less luck involved.

1{ hearts 1NT 18-19+3] diamonds according to North, clubs according to South?

The Open Room auction was a model of simplicity; Mossop showed 19(+)-21 and Hydes named a final contract a moment later. Declarer claimed after the opening lead.

In the other room I believe North intended to show a canape with diamonds and then produced a quantitative 4NT sequence. The explanation at the table wasn’t clear, but I was told that South was trying to show a maximum but was under the impression clubs were trump and so was answering keycards? Since 6{ goes down on the ruff, I’m not sure if N/S were going to go plus in slam, particularly since North knew they had limited high cards; but I doubt whether +420 felt like a moral victory to them.

Mossop led by 26 IMPs and added to that immediately.

We have seen the Dutch throughout this tournament adding one to the normal level of pre-empting at favourable vulnerability, but when you live by the sword you occasionally impale yourself on it as well.

I don’t object to Van den Bos’ choice of 3] pre-empt but if you play this style, then partner has to pull in their horns. (Robson and Segal on Partnership Bidding at Bridge is a must for devotees of the style of aggressive pre-empting.) Mossop wasn’t too proud to take his shot at the fish in the barrel, and warned by the second deal of the set, he led ace and another trump. This wasn’t necessary today to collect 500, but the bulletin approves.

In the other room it was hard for N/S to play for penalties and also hard to see how to get to 5}. Even there, after a top-heart lead, declarer needs to unscramble his tricks to take his discard. North wins and cashes the top spades, then must go to the {A to arrange the pitch, after which the defence have a diamond ruff coming. Of course Verbeek could tell his partner “I did try to get us to the best game partner!’. The defence to 4[ starts with a top heart lead. You win and play a club, ducked, then unblock two rounds of trumps and play another club. West wins and can force you with two rounds of hearts. But you simply ruff in and draw a round of trumps,

leaving West with the master spade. He can ruff in when he wants but will then have to lead a diamond into the tenace. You lose just a spade, heart and club.

The lead was now at 38 IMPs but the last two deals offered Netherlands a small chance to get back into the game. The results had come in first from the Closed Room, and each suggested a chance for gain to the Dutch.

In the Closed Room the 1{ was systemic and unfortunate in allowing South to overcall. Had East managed to get to 2NT, he might have made it; but on the auction shown, nobody did anything foolish. The defenders took their club ruff, then declarer misguessed trumps in logical fashion to lose two trumps and also get forced. He finished up -200.

In the other room 2NT looked favourite to make, though if the defenders didn’t lead hearts declarer might well misguess the suit. But Alex Hydes on lead knew his partner had an opening bid and hadn’t acted over 1}; so he must have club length. Accordingly he hit on the }10 at trick one and down went Van Lankveld. Still 3 IMPs to Netherlands, with another promising +300 to come on the last deal.

Nicely judged by both Norths. West might have been doubled had he bid 3NT – and who knows what would have happened after that? As it was, both Easts felt their extra shape made up for the missing high-cards; given that a 17-count opposite wasn’t nearly enough, were they right or are the kibitzers merely exhibiting 20-20 hindsight? Each South led their singleton and got the ruff, with three other plain losers to follow. No swing and Mossop had won the set by 42 IMPs and led by 35 with 14 to play.

ZIMMERMANN STARTS NEW BRIDGE PROJECT IN THE COUNTRY OF HIS BIRTH – SWITZERLAND

The Swiss federation has sent a letter to both the EBL and WBF announcing Pierre Zimmermann together with the Swiss Bridge Federation have started a new project. Key elements of the project are Pierre Zimmermann supporting the Swiss Bridge Federation financially for promoting bridge in Switzerland and the set-up of a new professional team.

The news that Pierre Zimmermann is starting a new project has prompted renewed interest in bridge. These interviews with Pierre and the President of the Swiss Federation explain what is happening.

Why first Monaco and now Switzerland? When we started the Monaco project I wanted to

become Monegasque citizen for various private reasons. The FMB liked the idea of setting up a professional team and also the financial support I offered them. After all these years I decided I want to go back to my country of birth and help the Swiss federation that now has a professional administration and good ideas for developing bridge in their country. We have had several talks and we both have a good feeling about this project so we signed a contract last month.

How do you look back at the Monaco project? With mixed feelings of course. We have booked

some nice results and the cooperation with the FMB was excellent. Of course it is difficult for them to grow. Furthermore we have had the debacle of Fantoni-Nunes and later Helgemo-Helness who have run into personal problems. Fantoni-Nunes is over and out for me, even after the surprising CAS verdict. Helgemo-Helness are still good friends of mine and I’m sure they will play now and then for me in the future. But I don’t look back too much, I like to look to the future.

How do you see this future?I’m 64 years old now and I feel very well and fit.

So I like to compete in the Open; the Seniors can wait. The team of professionals I have built around me is a mix of talent, age and experience. This combination should be able to fight for a medal in all championships and tournaments. But we will not get it automatically. We will have to train hard and we will do it.

Tell us about your team!Gawrys-Klukowski is a pair that already has played

for me in several tournaments. Brink-Drijver I consider as one of the stronger pairs in the world. They will move to Switzerland where I have rebuilt a very nice building with luxury appartments. Krzysztof Martens will stay as our coach. With Franck Multon I’m still in discussion. He has a long time working permit in Switzerland and also is prepared to move to Geneva with his wife. But in his case we have an eligibility issue as you can only switch to another country once in every 10 years. Also Multon and Martens did play in Ostend 2018 so they are not allowed to play in Madeira 2020. Brink-Drijver and Gawrys-Klukowski did not play the Europeans in 2018. In the future we will fulfill all requirements of EBL and WBF concerning bona fide residence and eligibility.

When will your team be operational?Players have signed the working and rental

contracts starting June 1st and we have applied for their working permits. They are moving to Geneva now although it is a busy time with Istanbul and Las Vegas. And they still have other obligations like China, so it will take some time before we are settled. But I like to start as soon as possible. We have training facilities in this building so it is a real house of cards. Of course we will travel a lot around the world, but our home base is Geneva.

Why is Monaco not playing the Bermuda Bowl in Wuhan?

I don’t play. First of all, a long time ago I have decided I want to stay loyal to the players who qualified. Secondly, if we want to play the Bermuda Bowl 2021 for Switzerland we cannot play 2019 for another country.

What will happen with the Cavendish and EBL Winter Games you have always seriously supported financially?

The EBL Wintergames 2020, and by the way also after that a three-day big Open Pairs tournament with very good cash prizes, will take place in Monaco, as it was in 2016 and 2018. For the future I will continue to support these tournaments for sure and I am even discussing with EBL and WBF about more tournaments, for instance specific for the seniors.

How did EBL and WBF react on your plans? It’s all new for the moment. The EBL executive

committee has discussed it in Istanbul. The players have sent letters to both the EBL and WBF. From my experience I know EBL and WBF work closely together, so I have full trust in an appropriate handling.

How much do you pay to the Swiss Federation? This is between me and the Swiss Federation.

But I can tell you it is a multi-year contract that gives them the opportunity to promote bridge in Switzerland. I already heard some ideas they are working on and I think they already made a good start. International players of Switzerland also get support to play tournaments outside Switzerland. But probably Stephan Magnusson, president of the Swiss federation can tell you more about their plans.

Is there broad support for the project in Switzerland?

This is not yet clear; we have our General Assembly this Saturday (June 29th), where we will present this project in detail. We are reasonably confident that most of our members will be supportive.

This may mean that top players will have a somewhat lesser chance to represent Switzerland in the coming years; isn't the project therefore perceived negatively by them?

Frankly, the response by top players has been very positive so far, once we have the chance to explain all the facets of it. Sure, the open national team will be harder to get onto, but they will get more support to play in other international tournaments, to play regularly against the Zimmermann team, and have training sessions; but mostly the chance we will have to improve the promotion of bridge is what they see as the real value of the project for the FSB.

What projects are you working on to promote bridge in Switzerland?

First, we need to convince more clubs to have bridge courses, and therefore teachers, which the Federation had not done actively recently. We have just started with a 3-day course for teachers, and now will be able to accelerate this. Most clubs recognize this need, but do not necessarily know how to get started, or lack a qualified teacher.

As soon as we have enough teachers, we will start a project that has been successful in the

Netherlands, and later in other countries, aimed at singles over 50. The Dutch Federation gained several thousand new members, and have decided to start it anew. The politics and geography in Switzerland are quite different, but we should be able to realize this project nonetheless.

We also want to be able to introduce bridge in schools, but this may require a lot of preparation in order to be successful, so this will come a little later, hopefully.

Are there other advantages you can foresee with this partnership?

One can never be certain of such things, but it is likely that this team will achieve good results internationally in the coming years, and that will certainly help to spread the knowledge of bridge in our country.

Having the chance to meet these players in some of our national tournaments will help other players to improve, raising the general level.

We also hope, in collaboration with Pierre, to organize international tournaments in Switzerland in the coming years; nothing is decided yet though.

STEPHAN MAGNUSSON, PRESIDENT OF THE SWISS BRIDGE FEDERATION WAS KIND ENOUGH TO ANSWER A FEW QUESTIONS:

I came to the table and sat down behind Jansma as he put down the dummy in 2], and he commented (silently) that maybe he should have bid more. Willenken proved him right after a top club lead and trump shift. He won in dummy and led dummy’s {Q. Uslupehlivan took his {A and played a second club. Back came a second club and now the second trump came too late. Willenken won in hand and ruffed a diamond, came to the [Q and ruffed a diamond, then ruffed a club to hand and drew the last trump with three spade winners to come for 10 tricks.

Declarer has four spade tricks and five heart tricks off the top; the defenders could have arranged a fourth trick either via an early spade play (to force declarer to draw trumps or suffer the ruff) or by getting a third trump in early. +170 was worth 45 matchpoints (with top 50 that is a 90% score of course). Note that the deal actually belongs to N/S in diamonds; but who bids minors these days?

If Jansma was unhappy with his first deal, he was far less content after the second deal:

Jansma decided to stretch to force to game by relaying for range then showing short diamonds. With 5} eminently playable and 3NT awkward on a spade lead, this wasn’t unreasonable. But I wonder if Jansma intended 4} as non-forcing while Willenken took it as stronger than 5}? Willenken knew that 3NT was going to be a decent spot so maybe he had to commit to slam here. Regardless, there might have been ways for exploring for slam in a less committal way than the one he found – but he knew his partner would not co-operate. Declarer won the diamond lead and led a club to the king and ace. On the trump return he finessed, perhaps hoping that if he picked up the trumps for down one he might achieve a decent comparison against those down in other games. Not tonight Josephine...

Not surprisingly -100 was a terrible result, a stone-cold zero. Down one would have been equally bad but of course had Willenken’s view in clubs been correct he would have garnered quite a few MP.

Fortunately for them, and this reporter, who prefers not to preside over tales of woe, things picked up from there. Deals three and four were played against Akhun and Ozer, and on the first a gambling 3NT in third seat from Akhun went down a trick for -50 on what was essentially a partscore deal, where his opponents could make 140 in spades. That earned declarer a 76% score – a lot of pairs went down 100 in clubs.

The fourth deal showed Willenken/Jansma’s system to great effect.

Taken in tandem, Willenken’s first two calls showed a balanced hand or hearts, while Jansma relayed then showed specifically 4-4 in the majors without game interest. Willenken played 2[ on a trump lead and won in dummy to lead a low club from the board. I suspect South’s best play in theory as well as practice is to rise with the ace and shift to diamonds, but he did not do so, letting his partner win the club and play back a spade. Declarer now drew trumps and led a second club, and on the diamond shift he had nine tricks for an 88% score.

For the next two deals Willenken/Jansma were in the right place at the right time.

After a spade lead, it looks logical to take in dummy and take a club finesse. When it holds, you may simply draw trumps and give up two diamonds and a trump. But Cakici won the spade in hand and played }A and another. Unluckily for her when the king turned out to be onside she was a long way behind the field. Willenken at this point shifted to a low diamond. Declarer guessed to duck this to the ace, and put up the 10 on the diamond return that went to the queen and king. Now she made the fatal error of forgetting the Dentist Coup of cashing the [K before taking the heart finesse, and when Jansma returned a spade, declarer had to guess how to exit from dummy. She made the best percentage play of ruffing a club low, but Jansma could overruff for down one. That gave the defenders a 94% score. Even making ten tricks would have been below average for declarer (11 are available by taking a club finesse then running {J.)

Jansma could have doubled 4{ for a spade lead; does that make Willenken’s choice of a spade an anti-percentage one? You be the judge. I STANBUL DIARYMARK HORTON

The Editor presents his diary from the European Open Championships in Istanbul

29 JuneAs the end of another Championship draws close,

we wait to see if anyone can mount a challenge to the runaway leaders of the Open Pairs, Thomas Bessis and Frederic Volcker. They will be hoping to emulate the achievement of their compatriots, Cedric Lorenzini and Baptiste Combescure, who dominated the field to win the first edition of the Jean-Paul Meyer Pairs - how fitting that it should be a French pair.

There is so much to do at such a big event, that important things can be overlooked. At breakfast this morning, I bumped into David Mossop and we had a quick chat about his team's victory in the Open Championship. When he mentions that he is surprised that a report on the third session of the final has not appeared in the Bulletin, the alarm bells start ringing, as I know Barry watched it. You will find it in this issue - better late than never!

Meanwhile here is a great deal from the second session of the Pairs' final - maybe the best defence of the event:

Board 4. Dealer West. All Vul. [ K 9 4 ] K 10 6 { A Q J 10 } 9 6 3 [ Q J 10 8 7 2 [ A 6 ] 7 4 3 2 ] A Q 9 5 { 8 { 6 5 4 } K 2 } A Q 10 7 [ 5 3 ] J 8 { K 9 7 3 2 } J 8 5 4

North found the spectacular lead of the {Q, which was to have unforeseen consequences as the play unfolded. South followed with the two and North continued with the {A, ruffed by declarer, who ran

the [Q and then played a spade to the ace. He ruffed a diamond and exited with a spade, North winning and exiting with the {10. Declarer ruffed and paused to reconstruct North's hand. He was marked with [K94 and from the lead and play appeared to have {AKQJ10. That made it virtually impossible for North to hold the ]K and so declarer played four rounds of clubs, throwing South in to lead into dummy's heart tenace. As expected, South held a red king - but when he produced the {K the contract was one down. As you might have guessed, this was a complete top.

Russia's Yuri Khiuppenen drew the attention of a Director to a revoke by his partner that had gone un-noticed by the other players. It changed the result on the deal from 4[+1 to 4[-1. Wonderful sportsmanship from the Russian star.

Producing the last Bulletin of any championship is always a challenge, especially if an exciting result is in prospect. The advantage of having an online only version is that there is no rush to deliver the pages to a printer, so if there is a decisive deal at the end we have more chance of including it - and we have even had occasion to add deals to a Bulletin several days after the event.

As I write the Open Pairs has every indication of being 'a close run thing' as some obscure general once said of a famous battle and we will do our best to do it justice, although the lack of BBO coverage complicates matters. Barry is reporting on the first half of set four, while I looked at the second half of that session.

On Board 10 Chris Willenken took an unfortunate view in a suit of ]K52 opposite ]AJ86 losing a trick even though the queen was onside in his spade part-score, +140 was only 7/43. Ten tricks would have been 19/31 with those recording +620 gathering 41/9.

By this stage Willenken and Jansma were very close to the leaders, but they suffered a setback when good bidding by their opponents (Mossop/Hydes) saw them defending 2[ and a defensive error cost a vital trick, changing -110 (37/13) into -140, 47/3.

Our Turkish readers were entertained by Murat Molva and Riva Şalhon. The proof-reading team was led by Jan Swaan, aided and abetted by Herman (Roll of Honour) De Wael (also our statistical guru), PO Sundelin (who, as you might expect also provided vital insights into the complex areas of bidding and analysis), Barry and Ron. We were also joined in the office by Simon Fellus and Arianna Testa who were busy producing a brilliant series of videos. Josef Harsanyi was our vital link to the organisation. Had West been a follower of Meckstroth’s well-known law ‘If partner freely raises your six-card major, bid game’ he would not have bothered with a game-try bid but gone directly to the four-level. However his partner bid the game for him. To succeed, declarer, as an absolute minimum, needed the king of trumps to be onside, not the case here. Only ten pairs actually bid the game and just one of them made it, though not for a complete top, as that went to the pair defending 4{X played by South. At our table, North led a small trump, taken in hand. Declarer then tried a small diamond but North rose with his king and switched to a club, taken by South.

Clubs were continued, ruffed in hand and declarer crossed to dummy via the queen of diamonds to lead a spade towards hand. Getting the bad news in trumps, he rose with the ace and ruffed his last diamond. He then had to lose a heart and the king of trumps, one down. Only 16% to E/W.

Eight N/S pairs bid game – I suspect after North opened with his eleven count. Scores varied from +990 to -790. As you can see, E/W can make 3} or 3]. 200 was worth 58% of the match-points.

this time it was not a success, more a bloodbath. Very quickly -800 was entered into the Bridgemate. On a different day the East and South hands are swapped and you have a potential 300 save against a vulnerable 3NT.

N/S were lying third at the end of the second session. North led the king of hearts, which was ducked. He continued with the }2 to the nine, queen and king. Declarer crossed to dummy’s }10 and took a losing trump finesse. He still had a red-suit loser, keeping him to just ten tricks. This gave Kubac & Kandemir 76%. Declarer can make eleven tricks but he must not duck the opening lead.

Declarer ruffed the opening heart lead in hand and tried the king of clubs, ducked by West. He continued with the club queen covered by the ace and ruffed in dummy. Another heart was ruffed in hand, followed by another club ruff. Yet again, a heart was ruffed. Declarer now had six tricks and made two more by ruffing a club with the bare king – either this won, or if East overruffed with the ace declarer’s Q10 were worth two tricks.

Only seven E/W were allowed to play the contract. The majority were playing 4[X. Failing by just two tricks was worth 62%.

Note there is no ‘*’ on the 2{ bid. My second instance of a natural weak 2{ during these championships. Declarer, Kieran Dyke, fresh from qualifying to represent England, played his king of spades under the opening lead of the ace. East continued with ace and another heart to his partner’s jack. The king of hearts was ruffed by declarer and a small diamond taken by dummy’s lone ace. The jack of clubs was covered by the queen, king and ace. East got off lead with a club, which went to declarer’s seven, who now had two trumps to lose and finished one down. With E/W not finding their heart fit this result was worth 62%.BULGARIA

We saw on this deal from our global report that the key to scoring well in 4] by South was the lead from West. A spade would concede 680, a diamond 650…but what about a club? Vassilis Vroustis declared 4] on a club lead and decided the lead would not be away from the king. He played low from dummy and East won cheaply and shifted to [8 – which fortuitously looked like a high spot-card to declarer. He took his [A (if he finesses the [Q he might even go down), then drew trump in two rounds ending in dummy. Now he led a low diamond from dummy, and East could not work out what had happened in spades, so ducked smoothly. Nice play; not the right moment for it!

Declarer now gave up a spade, then rejected the club finesse when a club came back. He went up with the ace and ruffed out the spades, and could discard the club loser from hand on the [10. Back to +650 and very nicely done too.

As usual, I count the number of deals played in the championships.

Including the six special tournaments and the extra deals in the Women Teams' final, 92,115 deals were played. This makes the ninth edition of the Transnational European Championships the fifth largest, behind Menton 2003 (123,647), Poznan 2011 (109,734), Sanremo 2009 (102,826) and Montecatini 2017 (98,160), but ahead of Antalya 2007 (89,882), Oostende 2013 (82,637), Tromsø 2015 (77,678) and Tenerife 2005 (77,393).

For the second time running, in all tournaments (even including the Staff pairs), every table received an individual set of boards. That means that the duplication staff needed to produce that same number of boards (and some extra in reserve). Indeed, Monica Gorrerri, chief of duplication, reports that her staff produced around 95,000 boards.

PLAYERS

Altogether 1,472 players from 47 countries competed in these championships. 638 players participated in the first week, and 1,162 players in the second week, with 328 players staying for both weeks.

NICE RECOVERY!

West was clearly determined to play in game. My finessing friend tells me that the lead of any diamond or the ace of hearts allows East to make his contract. From this preamble you are probably already guessing that South unerringly selected the ace of hearts. He continued by cashing the ace of clubs and just to make matters easier for declarer played another trump. When both defenders followed declarer gave up a diamond and claimed. That was 28% to the competition leaders.

West had a difficult decision as to whether to overcall, and as frequently happens in the pairs environment, the aggressive action paid off. With Four Hearts cold, Four Spades was an excellent save for thirteen pairs and for two a shared top when they brought their contract home. At this table, the defence immediately found the club ruff and the contract had no chance. Finding the sacrifice was worth 68% of the match-points.

Another kibitzer at the table at the end of the auction remarked that West was aiming to get his name in the Bulletin and he was right. South found the lead of the jack of diamonds to avoid all possibilities of a mistake by the defence. Only one other pair reached the dizzy heights of slam. Three pairs decided to rest in a part-score and the rest played in 4[, three of them making two overtricks. The third-placed English pair scored 98%.
