First Families of Richland County, Ohio 1990

At the Decerrber meeting of the Richland County Chapter, seven mert'bershad ancestors accepted into The First Families of Richland County, Ohio. Itwas a lovely Christnas party, with the tree in front of the large windowsand the mantles of the old Bushnell mansion decorated with greens andcandles. The smells and sO\mds of Christmas put us in a festive rrood.

Doris Miller presided over the refreslrnents and Donna Urban shared sanewonderful Christmas decorations.

The death records in this article were taken frOll the MicrofilM of the CflIGIHALbooks kept in the Rich. Co. Probate Court. (These had been copied by the WPA in the 1930'sand are on the shelf at the OGS Library and are incomplete!)

History of the Bellville Presbyterian Church

The history of the Presbyterian Church in Bellville goes back to the year 1837. At thistile the .elbers of the Richland Presbytery (no longer in existence) set out to enlarge itsaelbership. Services were held in a Slall schoolhouse. Interest grew and in April 1838 a groupof citizens of Bellville and surrounding farlS applied for organization of a coorch. Per. iss ionwas granted and organization was accomplished that spring. According to records coapiled on the25th anniversary, the original members were as follows: Enoch French &his wife. Mathew Geary &his wife Drusilla. John lafferty, Sr. &his wife Prudence, and ~s. Karia T. Horrow. This groupelected & ordained KatheN Geary and Enoch French as their ruling elders. Jues Robinson andJues RoMland were the supply linisters of this congregation.

FrOlt 1845 to 1851 the Bellville Church disappeared frOlll the roll of the Presbytery becausesome of the families had ~oved away and there was only occasional supply ministers. In 1851 thechurch was reorganized and restored to the roll of Churches. In the spring of 1853 constructionof a church building was begun, and within a year was ready for occupancy. The total cost ofthe building and lot was $1.547.11. Dedication services were held that spring with the Rev. John". Faris preaching the serllOn. By 1854 the church had 16 .e.bers.

The Rev. JIleS Anderson accepted the call to Lexington and became the supply pastor. Whenhe left in 18se there were 41 members. Rev. J. P. caldwell took charge in Kay 1859 for 1 year.The Rev. S. G. Dunlop followed, preaching only 6 aonths. The Rev. J. W. Huilton then suppliedthe church for a few IlOnths. The Rev. luke Dorland .aved to this couunity in 1862, divided hislabors between Bellville and Waterford. He was the first resident pastor and preached here 3years until 1866. In 1864 the church was repaired for the first tile.

The Rev. John O. Proctor began as pastor of the Church in 1866. The next pastor was theRev. Nicholas Stahl who stayed only 6 IIOnths. He brought 42 new Ilellbers into the church. Whenhe left Bellville there were 108 lelbers on the roll.

The Rev. Willi.. Wylie Anderson, the son of the first pastor, Jues Anderson, accepted acall in 1877. His pastoral was the longest in the Church's history for he stayed ten years andwas the first pastor employed full tillle. His salary, with a manse, was $800.00 per year.

The Rev. John Kelley cale to Bellville in 1887. He stayed until 1889, when he wassucceeded by Rev. W. L. Baker who left in 1891. The Rev. C. w. Caldwell arrived in 1892 and in1897 was asked to leave because the Church was not able to meet his salary.

The next full-tile pastor was Rev. J. W. Boyer who calle in 1898. While he was serving theunse was built on a lot donated by Abrahu Hires. On Oec. 1, 1899 excavation for the cellarwas begun. The service of~. F. Tinkey and his sa~ill was secured and the lill was .aved to"'. Oldfield's fara where donated lullber was collected and sawed. The foundation was laid inJan. 1900. The house was finished about Aug. 15, 1900. The house consists of 9 roo~s. pantry,6 closets, large attic. 2 porches, a large cellar, and woodshed. The Rev. Boyer left in 1903.

The pUlpit was then supplied by Rev. A. C. Rand and A. O. king. At the tile of Rev. W. L.Bone. 1907-1908 the first choir was organized with 15 young people.

The Rev. David E. Schnable came in Nov. 1952. Through his pursuing old Church records. theCentennial celebration for the 100 Anniversary of the Church was held on Oct. 17, 1954. One wonders about the fun the attorneys and judges had in the early days. The courtswere 3 sole.n place and our early pioneers had great regard for the.. One of the first:!ccOltPlist.ents in any new county was to get the courts set up and functioning. With fewr.:!d.ed boundaries and very little cash, courts were a necessity. For instance. debts hadto be collected and the court would decide how that was to be done. There was a need forthe c~rts to reconcile both civil and cri.inal differences.

The judges and lawyers traveled around the state and brought certain courts to thepeople. rather than the people traveling to the courts. One of the ItOSt interestingjudges was Judge Ebenezer lane, of Norwalk, Ohio. He aade the circuit around northernOhio in the company of the other judges and attorneys. It was a difficult and dangeroustask to travel the old trails from one com.unity to another and the group ca~e to be knownas la~e's brigade. James Purdy, of Kansfield. was known as "the .ajor;" John M. Hay, was'J: sharp and merry gentleman; Andrew Coffinberry. was called "Count Coffinberry," he was at:ithe, witty and most lovable man, with aristocrat tastes; Jacob Parker and Charles R.~herman, a brother of John Sher~an, alOng others, often .ade up a group to travel thewilderness to bring order and understanding to the far settle.ents.

The temple of justice in these outlying counties was usually a log tavern. a schooln~L!se and rarely a court house. Riding through the wilderness. the hardy gentlellen aade~uite a parade. They usually arrived at the next county covered with dust or bespatteredwith IlUd. Count Coffinberry would vanish and appear a short ti.e later in a fresh outfitto-:t had been carried in his portll8nteau, perhaps at the expense of a law book.
