There were great speakers, many genealogists to talk with, and a large exhibit hall for shopping for genealogical books and supplies. The Ohio Historical Society was present with copies the newly released indexes and rolls of microfilm for death certificates from 1944 through 1953. Their room was constantly busy as genealogists searched for their relatives' death certificates. At twenty-five cents per copy, it was a bargain, especially since it saved a trip to Columbus. If you have never been to an OGS conference, you have missed a great learning and shopping opportunity. Our chapter had a table in the exhibit hall manned by Missy Derrenberger, our treasurer, for much of the weekend. We decided to take just a couple copies of our older books and more copies of our newcr books so that it was easier to manage. As a conference special, we offered free shipping of any of our books purchased at the •conference. [See the website at www.ogS.org for details on next year's conference. President's Message

The 2005 Ohio Genealogical Society annual conferencein April was a fantastic event. There were great speakers,many genealogists to talk with, and a large exhibit hall forshopping for genealogical books and supplies. The OhioHistorical Society was present with copies the newlyreleased indexes and rolls of microfilm for deathcertificates from 1944 through 1953. Their room wasconstantly busy as genealogists searched for theirrelatives' death certificates. At twenty-five cents percopy, it was a bargain, especially since it saved a trip toColumbus.

If you have never been to an OGS conference, youhave missed a great learning and shopping opportunity.Our chapter had a table in the exhibit hall manned byMissy Derrenberger, our treasurer, for much of theweekend. We decided to take just a couple copies of ourolder books and more copies of our newcr books so thatit was easier to manage. As a conference special, weoffered free shipping ofany ofour books purchased at the

The Akron Public Library now has copies of themicrofilm of the death records indexes and certificatesfrom 1908 through 1953. Old autograph books can provide not only namesand dales. but also some insight into the thoughts ofanearlier generation. My maternal grandmother, MinnieGilkison, started circulaling her book in 1883. Shewas fourteen years old at the time and was living inMansfield. Most entries began by addressing, "FriendMinnie, orjusl "Minnie." This is what they wrote.

In Memoriam

John Engelhardt has infonned us of the death of hismother, Catharine Elizabeth Oates Engelhardt on 19 Apr2005 in Lenexa, Kansas. The funeral was held inOverland Park and burial was in Plymouth, Ohio.

Edward P. Smith, 87, passed away 16 Apr 2005 at hishome in Mansfield, Ohio. He was born in Indianapolis,Indiana, on 16 Nov 1917, to Edward F. and BlanchePearce Smith. Ed carne to Mansfield in 1939, aftergraduating from Purdue University with a degree inelectrical engineering to work at the Ohio Brass Co.,where he remained until retirement in 1980. Surviving arehis wife of 61 years, Maxine (Hanman) Smith; twodaughters and their husbands, Evelyn and Gary Kinzel ofColumbus, Helen and Richard Mao of Mishawaka,Indiana.; a son and his wife, Donald and Sally Smith ofIndianapolis; six grandchildren, Edward and NathanKinzel, Daniel, James, Jeffrey and Julia Smith; and afonner daughter-in-law, Nancy Smith of Indianapolis. Hisfinal resling place will be in the memories of those wholoved and respecled him.

Joseph R. Graham, husband of member Helen Graham,was born 16 Feb 1914 in Toledo, OH, and died 30 Mar2005 in Mansfield. Burial was in Oak Grove MemorialPark in Lexington. Joseph was a veteran, having servedwith the U.S. Anny Air Corps' 1408'h air transponationcommand in the European Theater of Operation.

The Englehardt, Smith, and Graham families have oursincere sympathy.
