“Advent Awakenings”
It’s that time of year, when Christmas trees go up in homes and blinking LED colored lights get strung up outside on porches, on bushes and in trees. Likewise, the shopping lists have grown and online browsing and adding to the cart has commenced in earnest. There is no denying what holiday is right around the corner.
The church sanctuary will soon undergo a transition complete with an Advent wreath, with its five candles. Candles representative of hope, peace, joy, love and the Christ Child. Advent, traditionally, is the beginning of the Christian year and proclaims the themes of watchful waiting, anticipation, hopefulness and fulfillment.
As we gather as God’s people during this Advent season, we will be preparing our hearts to receive and welcome more of God’s love and grace offered in the gift of God’s Son, Jesus. I dare say, if you and I are more alike than different, who among us couldn’t use more of God’s love and grace? Being aware of or attentive to such a possibility remains a big part of the Advent task. Will we be ready and prepared to receive what God wants to give us?
One analogy comes to mind in this deer season. There have been times when I go to that nice. peaceful and quiet deer blind, while still dark, having gotten up earlier than normal. Given the stillness and silence of the morning I have been known to doze off, only to sometime later be awakened by who knows what. Oftentimes to sights and sounds of a bird greeting the morn, squirrels chattering away or even deer near the feeder.
Dare we miss what God wants to bring our way this Advent! Some new opportunity to share our giftedness in Christ with another person or a challenge to remain alert and awake to hopeful possibilities of another kind.
Let us be attentive, so that we don’t miss anything of God’s doing and thus we have a Merry Christmas as God intends.
Blessings, Lonnie

Missions Update Keri Dodson
Thank you for helping pack 202 Operation Christmas Child boxes in 2017! We surpassed our goal handily, and plan to set a larger goal next year. Many ideas have been brought forth on ways to improve our box packing. Keep an eye out for how you can help this be a successful mission for our church and for the Lord. Our year round box packing will resume in January with hats, scarves, and gloves. Start watching for sales this winter and help us stock up!
Angel Tree children selected from our tree on November 26th need their gifts returned to FUMC by December 10th. We had 15 children on our list and are happy to make their Christmas bright this year.
Health & Wellness Hearing Loss: What did you say? Janet Crain, RN, Wesley Nurse
Hearing loss is a common problem caused by noise, aging, disease, and heredity. People with hearing loss may find it hard to have a conversation with friends and family. They may also have trouble understanding a doctor’s advice, responding to warnings, and hearing doorbells and alarms.
Approximately one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss, and nearly half of those older than 75 has difficulty hearing. But some people may not want to admit they have trouble hearing. Older people who can’t hear well may become depressed or may withdraw from others to avoid feeling frustrated or embarrassed about not understanding what is being said. Sometimes older people are mistakenly thought to be confused, unresponsive, or uncooperative because they don’t hear well.
Signs of hearing loss: Have trouble hearing over the
telephone Find it hard to follow
conversations when 2 or more people are talking
Often ask people to repeat what they are saying
Need to turn up the TV volume so loud that others complain
Have a problem hearing because of background noise
Think that others seem to mumble
Can’t understand when women and children speak to you
Loud noise is one of the most common causes of hearing loss. Noise from lawn mowers, snow blowers, or loud music can damage the inner ear, resulting in permanent hearing loss. Loud noise also contributes to tinnitus (ringing in the ears). You can prevent most noise-
related hearing loss. Protect yourself by turning down the sound on your stereo, television, or headphones; moving away from loud noise; or using earplugs or other ear protection.
Earwax or fluid buildup can block sounds that are carried from the eardrum to the inner ear. If wax blockage is a problem, try using mild treatments, such as mineral oil, baby oil, glycerin, or commercial ear drops to soften earwax. A punctured ear drum can also cause hearing loss. The eardrum can be damaged by infection, pressure, or putting objects in the ear, including cotton-tipped swabs. See your doctor if you have pain or fluid draining from the ear.
Viruses and bacteria (including the ear infection otitis media), a heart condition, stroke, brain injury, or a tumor may affect your hearing. Hearing loss can also result from taking certain medications. “Ototoxic” medications damage the inner ear, sometimes permanently. Some ototoxic drugs include medicines used to treat serious infections, cancer, and heart disease. Some antibiotics are ototoxic. Even aspirin at some dosages can cause problems. Check with your doctor if you notice a problem while taking a medication
Heredity can cause hearing loss, as well. But not all inherited forms of hearing loss take place at birth. Some forms can show up later in life.
Ways to cope with hearing loss: Let people know that you
have a hearing problem. Ask people to face you and
speak to you more slowly and clearly. Also, ask them to speak louder without shouting.
Pay attention to what is being said and to facial expressions or gestures.
Let the person talking know if you do not understand what he or she
is said. Ask the person speaking to
reword a sentence and try again.
The most important thing you can do if you think you have a hearing problem is to seek professional advice. Your family doctor may be able to diagnose and treat your hearing problem. Or, your doctor may refer you to other experts, like an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor), or an audiologist (health professional who can identify and measure hearing loss). Hearing problems that are ignored or untreated can get worse. Hearing aids, special training, certain medicines, and surgery are some of the treatments that can help.
The information for this article was condensed from the National Institute on Aging website: Visit https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/hearing-loss-common-problem-older-adults, pick up the handouts on the health education table, or see me in my office.

Safe Sanctuaries/Gatherings Next year at end of June 2018
Annual Conference’s new Safe Sanctuary procedures go into effect for ALL Rio Texas churches. These are new requirements for all adults that work with children, youth and vulnerable adults in our church.
There are two separate trainings: one is on the Safe Gatherings website: www.Safe Gatherings.com; the other training can be done online at www. riotexas.org/safetrainings and consists of three modules.
We will be hosting a training on February 17, 2018, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. Beginning at 9:00 am, we will have the Safe Gatherings portion of training that most of you will complete online at the time of registration. Any that cannot complete this portion online, please call the church office the first part of our training is going to be for you.
Those of you that have computer access:
1. You will need to go to www.SafeGatherings.com and create a log-in. It will ask you for two references and personal information for a background check. There is a $10 fee that should be billed to the church.
2. Do training on this website for the abuse prevention (about 2 hours) and complete the quiz at the
end. (At our on-site training, this portion will be offered in the first hour.)
3. Then go to www. riotexas.org/safetrainings for the other three modules required. On-site training lasts around two hours; online training takes about three hours to complete. Our on-site training will begin at 10:00 am on February 17, 2018 for this portion.
This is for the safety of our children and our vulnerable adults and is the NEW Rio Texas Policy that we must comply with to stay in good standing. If you need any help or have any questions, please call the office.
Thank you for your time and efforts.
Thank you November 24, 2017 My Dear Church Family,
Thank you for your prayers and words of comfort during my James’ illness and passing. God has been so good to us in leading us to you when we moved to Hondo. You let us serve the church in various committees and choir.
Thank you my precious friends and church family for your love and support in time of need.
Blessings, Martha McTaggart.
Lay Leader’s Corner By Carolyn Muennink
By now, I am guessing that most of you know that I have moved to a nice quiet neighborhood in the big city of Devine. It is much quieter than Hwy 462, where the tractor-trailers were going by at all hours day and night. Well, except for the marching band that practices at 7:30 in the morning. Our house is one half black from the High School. The new home is a lovely older home which I am sharing with my daughter, Linda, who is now able to work from home. The house is large enough for her to have an office and an art room for me.
No, I am not leaving my church! You are not getting rid of me that easy. God has blessed me with this home where all of you my brothers and sisters who have nurtured me through these last thirty-five years, are welcome to visit.
This is my last newsletter article as your Lay Leader. What a privilege it has been to serve you in that capacity for the past three years. Trisha Boll will be your new lay leader starting on January 1, 2018. I pray that you will support her as you have supported me in the past. I know that she has some great ideas and plans for the future. Here is wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year.
Spiritual Gifts Discovery Workshop

Carter, Each One a Minister, Using God's Gifts for Ministry for the content of the workshop. Pre-registration is necessary so that course materials can be ordered for participants. The pre-registration fee is $9.
Fill out the form below and leave the form and check in the church office.
Homes for the Homeless by Brenda Vavricek
As I talked about in the Children’s sermon on Sunday, November 19th, I will be participating in a mission trip to Reynosa Mexico the week after Christmas. The ministry builds houses for people who live at the trash dump in Reynosa. I asked the children and congregation to please pray for the families and the team. I also asked the kids to look through their toys and clothes and to donate anything they could. Thank you to those that have already donated!!! These families are extremely poor and need so much from toiletries to clothes to household needs to baby items, to name just a few. If you can donate items or gift cards for the ministry, please leave the items at the church and I will take them with me when I go.
I was so blessed to have several people approach me after church to indicate their desire to become involved with this. I would love love love for
Hondo FUMC to get involved with this. I did contact the ministry leaders and there is room if anyone would like to participate. The cost is $545 per adult and the trip is December 26-December 31st. The dates for spring outreach trips will be published in January, so I will keep you all posted.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call me 210-789-4024 or email me [email protected]. (I will be gone Dec. 9-23rd). If you would like to look at information about this awesome ministry, please go to www.strategicalliance.org .
Medina County Food Pantry
As many of you know, our Food Pantry operates out of a WWII building on Arnold Street. There are broken windows, holes in the floor, old plumbing and pipes, it is in dire shape. Currently funds are being raised for a new building which will house the Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels and the Nutrition Center.
A major corporation in San Antonio has offered a matching grant toward everything raised by December 10th. IF you were thinking of giving to this cause, now would be an excellent time to do so. Checks can be given to Ethel Martin or dropped by the Food Pantry on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday mornings when the pantry is open. Or call Frances Lopez at 254-420-8499. Checks should be made to Medina County Food Pantry Building Fund.

UMW News Janice Highsmith
The United Methodist Women will meet December 6 at the church Fellowship Hall for the annual Christmas luncheon. This will be a salad luncheon so everyone is asked to bring a favorite salad or dessert to share. Come at 11:00 am for fellowship and fun activities. Make plans now to attend this luncheon for a blessed time of fellowship and good food! Bring a pair of socks and a can of food for the Food Pantry as well. It will be a delightful start for the Christmas season!
The annual Sock Tree will be set up in the church foyer after worship on November 26. UMW collects socks of all sizes during the Christmas season for the Medina County Food Pantry to distribute to their clients. According to the Bomba sock company ad, “Socks are the #1 most requested clothing item at homeless shelters.” Even though south Texas doesn’t have the coldest weather in the country, there is just something special about having a good pair of socks to wear. The congregation is invited to share with our community friends by purchasing a new pair of socks (for a woman or a man or a boy or a girl) and bringing them to church during December. Clothes pins are on the Sock Tree for clipping the socks. Let’s try to cover this small tree with wonderful socks!
Also remember that the Food Pantry runs low on food during this time of year. We can work together to fill their bins in our church foyer and fellowship hall. Grocery bags are provided with a list of items you can bring. Thank you for joining UMW in mission to our community!
Friends Academy November was exciting for
our school. We had classes hike Lost Maples State Park, a day at the South Texas Corn Maize, and we fed 160 people at our annual Thanksgiving Feast. The students also enjoyed making place mats to help decorate for FUMC's annual Thanksgiving Lunch. The week before the holiday was extremely busy packing 202 boxes for Operation Christmas Child which was a huge success due to a joint effort with FUMC and friends of the school.
December 3rd is our annual BBQ fundraiser. The $8 plate includes a chicken quarter, sausage, rice, beans, and slaw. There will also be a bake sale full of fantastic homemade items. Don't fret if you haven't purchased your tickets yet; contact Kristi Frosch, 830-426-9388 or Keri Dodson, 830-486-8354.
New Member Please welcome Kaila
Garcia to our church family. She joined on Sunday, November 5. We are so happy to have her as a part of our congregation!
UMW president Janice Highsmith presents a donation to Troop Master, Chris Young and Senior Patrol Leader Christian, Maldonado for the Troop 370 upcoming high adventure.
