This was followed by Christmas pudding, chocolate yule log, chocolate brownies and mince pies - and best of all Christmas crackers! Thank you to Ali, Tilda, Nora, Althea and Rosemarie for working so hard on the day, chopping, peeling, baking and roasting. It was a huge success!! Dear parents, It’s the end of another fabulous term! I look back at this long term and see the work the children and staff have done and I am amazed and very proud. I know I am so fortunate to be working with such a committed, hardworking and enthusiastic team of teachers, support staff, office and kitchen staff and cleaning team. Everyone works so hard and always goes above and beyond to ensure that the children have a fabulous school experience. WP is so lucky to have them! We are over halfway through the dance workshops and the different sections of the performance are coming together so well. It is a privilege to watch the children and you are in for such a treat! I know some families have already been to see Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella at Sadler’s Wells, which they have thoroughly enjoyed. The performance will also be televised on BBC2 on Boxing Day at 5.35pm, so you have the opportunity to see the stage that your children will be performing on in January! We have amended the start time to 6pm, to take into account the fact that it is a very long day, particularly for our youngest children. We said goodbye to Molly this week, the TA who works with Meg across both Reception classes. She is moving onto new adventures. We are very sorry to see her go, as she has been part of the EYFS team for over 2 years and she has always made such a super caring contribution to the team. However, she has been inspired by our setting, and our lovely children, and is leaving to study to become a teacher in New Zealand what an amazing adventure! Her flight leaves today! We are hoping she can complete her training there and then maybe come back to London…..! Thank you to all our families for your ongoing support, it is very much appreciated by myself and the staff team. Wishing our families a very happy Christmas and a restful break. We look forward to seeing all the children back in school on Monday 8 th January. Best wishes Karen Issue 123 Thursday 21 st December 2017

Rivka’s mum visited Year 2

Year 2 had a special treat on Monday. Rivka’s mum came to teach us about Hanukah and read a brilliant story to the class by Lemony Snicket called ‘The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming!’. Louise taught us about Hanukah, lighting Hannukiahs and Jewish traditions during this special festival. She also provided delicious treats for all the children – Latkes! They were scrumptious! Thank you so much Louise!

Madrid Correspondence

To our friends in Madrid (who we know also enjoy

reading the Patten Pages!). Thank you for your

correspondence earlier in the term which we really

enjoyed receiving and reading. We have been busy

preparing our replies to you and all the children in

KS2 have written letters to you in Spanish!

Some classes have made Christmas cards and

every class from reception to Year 6 has completed

a whole class message in their class passports (we

look forward to receiving these back from you soon

with a message from each partner class).

We look forward to receiving our next letters from

the children of Josep Tarradellas in Madrid. All our

correspondence is now on the way in a very (very)

large and heavy envelope!

Feliz navidad to all.

Nursery & Reception Christmas Show

The EYFS Nativity performances proved to be

smash hits; on both days we had a hall full of

smiling and singing camels, donkeys and sheep!

Children performed their Nativity show to packed

audiences of parents, grandparents and family

members as well as Year 1 and 2 children. They

were amazing; not only did they learn their lines,

and when to say their part, but they also learnt all

the words and actions to their songs! During the

performances, as well as during the rehearsals,

they worked brilliantly as a team to listen to,

encourage and support their friends. We were

very proud of the way they performed in front of

such packed audiences and we are sure that all of

their families are too! After our Nativity show, the

Sadler’s Wells performance will be a breeze!

Congratulations! The winners of the Deborah Reade Art Award for

the Autumn term were announced at a special assembly on Tuesday. The theme was ‘Make like David Hockney’ and we had some amazing entries. Congratulations to the winners:

EYFS: Evie Macneil (RW) KS1: Grace Bellingham (1A) KS2: Ivy Oakland (5D)

Their beautiful artwork is on display in the school office. Please come and have a look.

Kindness Cup

The latest children to be awarded the Kindness Cup

are Sophia (2T), Josh I (5M) Maya (5D) and Ethan

(6J).

Sophia was nominated by Tanya who said “Sophia

is a genuinely kind person who always takes care of

others and not just herself. She always offers to

help and last week tidied up every table in the

classroom”.

Josh is always polite, kind and courteous to

everybody. Recently, he intervened on behalf of a

younger child, which showed courage and was also

incredibly kind. Josh was nominated by Karen.

Maya made a delicious cake for the Winter Fair and

Karen loved it so much that she asked for the

recipe! Maya made her a beautiful book with the

recipe in and that was such a thoughtful thing to do.

Maya is always lovely and kind to everyone in

school.

Ethan is always kind, polite and considerate to

everyone at school. He was noticed by Diane last

week when he stopped to let her though the door,

as she was carrying lots of stuff!

Their names have been added to the leaves on our

Kindness Tree in the bottom hall.

Creative Writing Week

This term saw our very first Creative Writing Week

at William Patten. The school was unexpectedly

invaded by a rowdy collective of crayons,

demanding an improvement in their treatment at

school. Whilst the mischievous crayons hijacked

assemblies and protested in classrooms, the

children across the school did their best to help their

cause by writing stories, poems and letters. The

children’s writing will be going on display around the

school so if you’d like to take a look, watch out for

the Class Anthologies with all the children’s

published writing.

Ali’s mulled apple juice recipe

1 cinnamon stick

Peel of 1 large orange

Peel of 1 large lemon

Small knob of fresh ginger, grated

1 litre carton apple juice

2tsp runny honey

If the jug of mixture cools before you’ve finished drinking, you

can simply return it to an empty saucepan and reheat it again!

Method: Add the cinnamon stick, orange and lemon peel, and

a sprinkle of the grated ginger to a large saucepan. Pour in the

apple juice and place the pan over a low heat, simmering for

10-15 minutes to allow the flavours to infuse. Stir in the honey

(you can add a little more to taste if required). Strain the

mixture into a jug and serve whilst still warm.
