The Grapevine The P&C Newsletter from Narrabeen North Public School Week 2, Term 4 Thursday, 20 October, 2011 From the P&C President… Yeah, the twilight fair is almost here! A huge thank you to Karen McEwan and Kath Skaarup for their efforts so far, the amount of work you have undertaken to make this happen is truly amazing. The time has now come for everyone else to step up and lend a hand wherever they can. Commencing this weekend we need your help. A note was sent home detailing the dates and times that you can help, disappointingly at this stage very few people have offered to assist in anything at all. Please remember our golden quote “Many hands make light work”. We appreciate that you may only be able to assist for 30 minutes to an hour and that’s fine – it still helps. Please refer to your note and let Karen or Kath know if you are able to assist in any way. On the day of the fair, we will need as much help as possible to set up. There is no need to call if you find you have a spare 30 minutes on the day, just come to the school any time from 9am and you can be assured that your help will be much needed and much appreciated. Also please don’t worry about bringing smaller children – they are welcome too, the most important thing is as much help as possible. Traditionally it also seems that the vast majority of the school population are nowhere to be seen when it comes to lending a hand once the fair is over. Again, I ask you all to lend a hand where ever you can. We will need help on the night after the fireworks to start packing things up and again on the following Saturday morning to finish the job in the daylight. These type of events are much loved by the kids of the school and the funds raised benefit the whole school community. It would be a shame for future events such as this to have to cease because we cannot get the help. Please take this into consideration and remember that even 30 minutes of your time helps us greatly. Are you seeing blue? If not, you need to pop your head into the school dome. The new curtains have been hung and they look fantastic, our school community can be very proud when we hold formal assemblies in here, the curtains really give the room a very formal look and both the green and yellow sports uniforms look great against the navy. They also provide ASC and the P&C with some much needed hidden storage space. Don’t forget that there will be a special presentation at this month’s P&C meeting, Wednesday, 26 October at 7.30pm, outlining the benefits of the Positive Behaviours Engaging Learners Program (PBEL) that the school will be introducing in 2012, hope to see you there. PCS Update from the coordinators, Jann and Sharon It seems hard to believe we have reached Term 4 already. Where has this year gone? Year 6 students are enjoying their last term in their Primary Schools and the PCS High Schools are preparing for the arrival of Year 6 in 2012. Kindergarten orientations have begun and High School orientations will take place later this term. Year 12 students begin their HSC this week. Best wishes to all Year 12 students as they put the finishing touches on their 13 years of schooling. Robotics continues to be another busy area in our schools. Students have been invited to participate in a World Guinness attempt being held at Macquarie University October 25 for the greatest number of robots programmed to move and dance together. Further details of how to join in the challenge have been sent to your school. The PCS Robots are out and about visiting Newport and Collaroy Plateau. The regional First Lego League Competition is being held on 22 November at Narrabeen Sports High. The Peninsula Community of Schools has a commitment to ongoing improvement through a comprehensive professional learning program. PCS staffs have been able to participate in specialised workshops each term and are also supported by guest speakers. As part of the professional learning program Peter Blasina will be presenting to staff this week about “New Technology for 2012”. Students who have participated in The Young Einstein program are preparing for the Invention Convention. We are looking forward to the wonderful creations that will be showcased. You will need to type in the following address to reach the blog. http://peninsulacommunityofschools.wordpress.com/

John Gaul 6D; Mitchell Donnelly 6D; Daniel Vavich 6D; Blake Williams 6D; Kate Berry 6D; Georgia Waldron 6D and Lily Curtis 6D. Well done, everyone! Our Twilight Fair on next week We are all looking forward to our exciting Twilight Fair on next week. The organising committee is to be warmly congratulated for the amazing effort they have put in over several months to make the Fair a reality. As President Gay has mentioned in her report, earlier in this newsletter, now is the time for other members of our school community to come forward and lend a hand to ensure the overall success of this school event. Please make sure that you ‘sign up’ for one of the many jobs that need to be done. The school and the P&C needs YOUR help! Your active support is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Woolworths points and Coles vouchers Thank you to everyone who brought in dockets and vouchers for the Coles and Woolworths promotions. Both events are now closed. As of Wednesday, 19 October

We have a total of 15 512 points in our Woolies account!

We have a total of 44 986 points in our Coles account – and there is a big boxful still to be counted!

Special thanks to the wonderful students of 3T and Miss Town who have counted the many thousands of Coles vouchers that have come in to school! You have done a great job!! We are now deciding how to spend the points collected and will let you know as soon as we have decided. Thank you to the entire NNPS community for helping. PBEL at NNPS At the next P&C meeting on Wednesday, 26 October, members of the PBEL team will give a brief presentation of the PBEL program and the plans for its full implementation in 2012. You are welcome to come along to the P&C meeting at 7.30pm to hear about PBEL at NNPS. Sentences of the Week – guest class: 5B 5B have been working on ‘dressing up a sentence’ to add more detail/description to our writing. Here are a few examples from our holiday recounts: In the holidays, I woke up to a bright and misty morning. Aidan Todd The water was freezing and I thought I was going to get hypothermia. Joel Conaty The toboggan was frighteningly fast, going at 100 miles/hour down the sharp, tight corners and down the steep hill. Ben Welsh Robert Blanchfield

Term Invoice and Excursion Consent Note The above notes went home last week and are due back next Friday, 28 October.

We would appreciate if all payments could be made by this date to enable us to finalise arrangements for this very busy term (particularly Kindergarten students who travel to the zoo tomorrow).

School Website Due to technical difficulties we are currently

unable to date the website so items maybe out of date.

We will update the site as soon as we can.

SUSTAINABILITY NEWS BUSH CARE GROUP

Our final bush care group will be Saturday, 5 November from 12 pm to 3 pm. It is suggested you wear a hat, long sleeves and closed in shoes. It would also be great if you could bring along your own gloves, insect repellent and a rake, shovel or trowel if you have one. If you don’t have these items you are still very welcome.

If you are able to attend please return the attached slip to Mrs. Mulkeen by Wednesday, 2 November so we are able to assess numbers for the afternoon.

Thank you.

Mrs. Mulkeen and Sustainability Committee

The holidays started with some of the Senior Band kids doing their exams at the Conservatorium of Music in the City. What a fantastic effort by Nina Boksjo, Jaslyn Boughton, Jessica Lu, Zoe Oldham and Sophie Waller, who put in a lot of hard work practising beforehand and were a real credit to themselves and their teachers. Frances was very proud of all of them and they definitely deserved their break in the holidays. Lessons and practice started again last week, working towards performances by both Junior and Senior Band, as well as the Percussion Group at the Twilight Fair. The Guitar group may also be performing, so stay tuned. What a fantastic event the NNPS Disco was at the Pittwater RSL, which the Band had the pleasure of hosting this year. It was a sell out and the kids all had a lot of fun showing off their dance moves and playing games. The proceeds raised will go to purchasing several new instruments, to enable us to offer quality instruments to those learning to play. A huge thank you to Megan Catterall, Amanda Downs, Caroline Hepburn, Gaylene Searle and Karen McEwan for all their help to make the event possible, as well as to Pittwater RSL for their generous donation of the room and helium for the balloons Heidi Furber NNPS Band Committee

K-2 Athletics Novelty Carnival What a fantastic day! From the running races to egg and spoon races all students competed and participated with passion. I’d like to thank all the parents who helped and supported the event. It was great to see students jumping in the sack race, throwing javelins through the hoops and hurdling the hurdles. A brilliant effort by all students and teachers on the day. Maybe for next year a parent verse students running race could be on the cards and it would be handicapped of course. Well done NNPS.
