Page 5: The People Component

The People ComponentAn organization, by definition, is a network of individuals who have come together for a particular purpose.- Without purpose, there is no reason for the organization- Without people, there is no organization

So, It’s critical that in measuring and managing the performance of our organizations we do not forget about the human component. We really need to understand what motivates people and what we need to change.

Page 6: The People Component

What motivates people ?There are 6 factors that we need to understand what motivates people1. People are naturally motivated

“In some cases, trying hard to resolve motivation issues might ending up making thing worse”

2. Rewards do not motivates people“Some people will choose to take a lower-paid job just because they

enjoy it more”3. People need to work at the highest level

“Maximize their potential and use them as problem solver and innovators”

Page 7: The People Component

What motivates people ?..cont.4. People need autonomy“People need autonomy over what they do, who they do with, when

they do it and how they do it”5. People need to learn

“People have desire to know more and get better at something”6. People need to get better at what they do“Most people are interested in getting better at something they do”

What needs to change ?...cont.

We need to eliminate hierarchies and create organizations that comprise networks of people working towards a common purpose

Networks are more reliable and resilient than central control and hierarchical

Giving people a higher purpose and a system that enables them to control themselves, balanced with an open, safe and participative environment, provides the basis for unleashing human imagination and passion, opening minds and breaking traditional mental models and barriers.

Control Vs. Autonomy
