“...you were once aliens yourselves…”

The Exodus experience formed God’s Chosen People, giving them a fund of shared memories of their liberation from prior oppression through God’s powerful action. Often the people would be reminded of that experience, as a corrective to later tendencies to exclude others, as Israel grew more defensive in its national identity. If ‘chosen’, it was not because of anything inherently special in themselves, but because of God’s intent that they should stand as a sign of His justice and compassion. Do we see parallels with our present situation in the matter of our treatment of immigrants? It is a complex issue, with many factors: but we must not forget our history as ‘strangers and aliens’ in a land where our forebears sought a better life.

This Sunday there are focuses of interest aside from that of the assigned Scriptures. ‘Priesthood Sunday’ has been observed on the last Sunday of October for a few years, as a way to encourage young men to consider a possible vocation to the priesthood. I want publicly to thank our parishioners who have made a point recently to compliment our priests, and I happily join them in acknowledging the positive example we enjoy at St. Michael’s from Frs. Paculan, Quinn and Sheridan. It is a blessing for me to be associated with these men, and I am gratified, as Pastor, to see the impact they are having in the lives of our parishioners. They are good models for Deacon Sebastian as he continues his path to ordination as a priest in May, God willing. With my brothers, I can testify, after 44 years, to the privilege it is to serve the Lord and His People as a priest. Despite my obvious shortcomings, I have known others’ kind acceptance of my efforts to be the priest they deserve, and I feel each day the support of God’s grace in trying to live up to the ideals we priests profess. Our young men need to know both of those realities: that we find our lives are satisfying and meaningful, and that people appreciate efforts to reflect the care of the Good Shepherd among them. To any who may be considering the call to priestly ministry, I invite you to talk with one of us: it will be a joy for us to be of help as you seek to discern the Lord’s will.

This week the Church observes two days that remind us of our participation in the Communion of Saints. On November 1 it is the Feast of All Saints, and the next day the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. With the saints and the holy souls, we are members of the Body of Christ on its pilgrimage through human history. We ask the intercession of the saints to help us respond to our opportunities for holiness, and we pray for our beloved dead who await the Blessed Vision of God Himself. As we visit the graves of our faithful departed, particularly those who rest in Catholic cemeteries, we proclaim to the world our enduring belief in the resurrection of the dead and the gift of eternal life, the reward for lives lived in faith, hope and charity. God love you! Msgr. Tim Shugrue

All Saints Day ….A Holyday of Obligation, will be celebrated Wednesday, November 1, 2017. Masses will be at 7:00 a.m., 12 Noon, and 7:00 p.m. There is no Vigil Mass the day before.

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three

ANNUAL MASS OF REMEMBRANCE

On Saturday, November 4, 2017, at our parish Mass at 5:30 p.m., we will remember those relatives and friends who have died during this past year. Their names will be read during the Liturgy. Friends and relatives of those who have died will be invited to this special liturgy and ALL members of the parish are encouraged to attend.

In addition, THIS Sunday, October 29, 2017, at 4:00 p.m., during the Annual Concert in the church the week before, the names of those friends and relatives who have died during this past year will be read, to which ALL parishioners are invited. The special presentation, to Honor the Month of All Souls, will be Requiem by Gabriel Fauré and The Stabat Mater of Giovanni-Battista Pergolesi, featuring the Adult Choir and Flute, Trumpet, Organ, Harp and Guest Soloists.

Pictures of parishioners who have died in the past year will be placed on a Wall of Remembrance in the main lobby of the church beginning November 2. Also, a Book of Remembrance will be placed in the lobby in which you can record your loved ones’ names.

During the Octave of All Souls Day we will continue to pray for all our deceased family members and parishioners. You may add the names of your beloved using the envelopes sent to you, some of which will be available in the church lobby.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37) Do you put other “gods” before God? Is your love of money, power, status, or some personal possession greater than your love for God? Do you really recognize that everything you

have and everything you are is a gift from God?

MEMORIAL DONATIONS We are accepting Memorial Dona-tions for flowers for the Altar area, the Candles, Bread & Wine used for the Liturgies, and the week-ly Sanctuary Candle. These items may be donated in memory of someone or to mark a special occa-

sion. A donation of $10 is suggested for the candles, bread & wine and sanctuary candle, and a donation of $40 is suggested for the weekly flowers. (MEMORIAL CARDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THESE DONATIONS.) ALSO, as we face the need to replace vari-ous items for liturgical use, we are happy to arrange for memorials of deceased loved ones. Call the Parish Office.

WE OFFER OUR PRAYERS…

….for those who have entered into new and eternal life in Christ recently, especially:

Yolanda Delgaizo, Lillian R. Olsh, Clifford Durand

…..and may all our beloved deceased rest in peace. REFORMATION SUNDAY 2017 - Today is ‘Reformation Sunday’ for Protestant Christians, and 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the event that sparked the Protestant Reformation—the posting by Martin Luther of his 95 Theses criticizing the ‘selling’ of Indulgences by Catholic officials. Over the next decades, the unity of European ‘Christendom’ bound to the Pope in Rome dissolved amid the rapid growth of the main ‘reformation’ movements and rising nationalism. Proliferation of ‘protestant’ sects led the Catholic Church to convoke the Council of Trent (1545-1563), to consider a program of reform. The Council corrected Catholic pastoral and moral practice, clarifying doctrine on questions raised by Protestant reformers. For 450 years, Protestants and Catholics often expressed their divisions in hostile words and actions. In 1962, Pope St. John XXIII set as a major goal of the Second Vatican Council the pursuit of Christian Unity. An era of mutual respect for what Protestants and Catholics hold in common has followed, with official ‘Dialogues’ between the Catholic Church and other Christian bodies. In 1999, Lutheran and Catholic officials agreed on the doctrine of Justification, a chief point of dispute among Luther and his critics. In 2017, the Catholic-Lutheran Agreement was endorsed by leaders of the Reformed and Methodist churches. Today we join in praying for continued progress toward realizing Jesus’ wish “that they all may be one”.— Msgr. Tim Shugrue
