The People's Museum A lot of people view museums as grey and gloomy places of the past, full of objects that no one has any real interest in any more. The project The People's Museum intends to change that attitude. The plan is to give museums new and everlasting life in the virtual world that is the Internet. Imagine a museum to celebrate your country's heritage, a museum that stands for everything your nation is most proud of, everything that makes you who you are, everything that shapes your identity. What would that be? Apart from the above mentioned the project aims are to: - make students interested in their national heritage, encourage them to find out more about it and celebrate it by presenting their findings to other people in a creative, interesting, but above all educational way - make students appreciate their own background as the basis for understanding and accepting other people’s - enhance students’ interest in other countries, their cultures and national heritage - make students’ aware of diversity in culture, tradition and lifestyles of people around them - broaden students’ horizons by educating others while at the same time being educated - develop communicative skills using English as the means of global communication

Work process:

April: The participants introduce themselves writing a guided poem Where I’m from* All the participant will be given detailed instructions how to write the poem. The key is makingit as specific and personal as possible. Instructions:1 Use the following categories to list specific details related to you.a) Parents’ names and significant relatives;b) Special food or meals;c) Family specific games or activities;d) Nostalgic songs;e) Stories, novels or poetry that you'll never forget;f) Phrases that were repeated often;g) The best things that you’ve been told;h) The worst things that you have been told;i) Ordinary household items;j) Family traditions;k) Family traits;l) Specific story(ies) about a specific family member that influenced you;m) Accidents or traumatic experiences;n) Losses;o) Joys;p) Location of memories, pictures, or mementos2 Select from your lists the items you want to include in your poem. You do not have to includeeverything that you listed, and you can always add more categories or items to include in yourpoem.3 Composing

1 Begin with: I am from _______________.2 Continue on the next line with: From___________ and ____________.3 Continue with: I am from __________ and __________.

Continue this format until you have completed your poem.4 End the poem with an explanation of where you keep any symbols, items, boxes or pictures

that may represent some or most of the topics you included in your poem.5 Reread your poem and make any changes or edits. This poem can be rewritten over and over

again, and you'll probably find yourself thinking about more things that you can add to yourpoem.4 Include a photo/drawing/PowerPoint presentation/video to accompany your poem. You canmake an audio/visual presentation of who you are! It does not have to include your personalphoto or the photos of your family and friends.

May: The participants work on a People’s Museum which is meant to celebrate their country’sheritage. They are to choose one object, one item or one person to put in for each of thesecategories:- An object with undeniable historical importance- A famous person- An object connected to a famous person- A TV character - An object of unquestionable quality- A symbol of national identity

- Other (of personal choice)The students are encouraged to take photos, make PowerPoint or video presentations. Everychosen object, item or person is to be described and the reasons for choosing it explained.

Expected results:By the end of this project, the students will have developed different skills: determination, self-confidence, decision-making, problem solving, independence, group working and creativity.They will have investigated the idea of national heritage trough history of their nation. Studentswill have had a chance to see and learn about hidden treasures in local galleries, museums,churches. They will have read less known books by local authors on national heroes, historicalevents, tradition, food... Students will have investigated their culture, religion, tradition andlifestyle through language, verbal and non-verbal communication and they are able to share thefacts about life in their country related to history, biology, art, culture, literature, religion.Students will have produced and exchanged PowerPoint presentations, cartoons and videos withtheir partner schools to present their findings (subjects: art, ICT, citizenship, English). Studentswill have learned with their peers using the internet in and outside school and regular classes. Inorder to complete the tasks assigned, they will have taken part in group work, research projectsand interviews with people both during lessons and in their free time.
