How large was the Eurasian bottleneck?

Microarray data • Average heterozygosity within Africa: 0.91 • Average heterozygosity immediately outside of Africa: 0.82

With a one generation bottleneck:

H1= ( 1 - 1/2N ) H0

H1=0.82, H0=0.91

Solving for N:

N = 5

This suggests a VERY small population founded Eurasia

To test the delayed expansion hypothesis, we estimated the timing of out of Africa and the timing of the Eurasian separation. Is the out of Africa event significantly older than the Eurasian separation?

How large was the Eurasian bottleneck?

Microarray data • Average heterozygosity within Africa: 0.91 • Average heterozygosity immediately outside of Africa: 0.82

With a 2400 generation bottleneck and with

N=12000:

H1= ( 1 - 1/2N )2400 H0

H0=0.91, N=12000

Solving for H1:

H1 = 0.82, which equals our observed H1
