I know Im not alone in breathing that huge sigh of relief ahhhh summer is finally here! For us long-term Tri-Citians, we know that a summer in the Columbia Basin means boat races, fair food, splashing in the Columbia River, and those oh-so-cool desert nights.

But with the ongoing boom in our local housing market, and new residents arriving to our perfect little paradise each day, its important to me to share with all of our new friends the wealth of activities and adventures awaiting them at every turn. I have dedicated this issue to exploring our local surroundings, and to encouraging each reader to get out and enjoy the endless opportunities for fun in the Tri-Cities.

From baseball games to outdoor concerts, theres something for everyone, every day of the week. Dont just wait for the weekends to entertain yourself. These summer evenings stay light up until our typical bedtime hours, lending us ample daylight to survey the region. No matter what your summer desires may be, take advantage of the famously warm weather and abundance of outdoor venues and activities.

If youre considering selling your home, now is the perfect time. The Tri-Cities sees its greatest increase in tourism in the summer months, many of whom are visitors who are so enthralled by the area that they decide to relocate. The longer daylight hours also give home shoppers more time and better light to view homes at their leisure. With summer officially in full-swing, now is the ideal time to start making those dreams of a new home a reality.

Heres to wishing you a summer full of fun and memories!

Mikey's ChanceLocal photographer brings out the best in every dog

We all know the old ad-age: dog is mans best friend. Now, a Tri-Cities-based organization is doing their part to pay back our four-legged friends for their long-recognized companionship.

Mikey's Chance is an organization dedicated to rescuing dogs from harmful and unsustainable living situations and placing them into supportive and loving homes that mutually meet canine and human needs and persona. This non-profit focuses on rescuing at-risk dogs in our region, striving to give them the gift of permanent placement in adequate and loving homes in the Northwest.

Ive been photographing their doggies in need since January, says volunteer Julie Saraceno, who photographs rescues. I love spending time with each dog, trying to capture how special they are. It makes my day when I hear one of

my photos helped to find them a new home.

Whats really spectacular about this organization? Mikeys Chance doesnt hold its furry friends in kennels. Each dog is placed into a foster home, where they receive the initial loving care they need, along with training and social interaction, ensuring each former victim has an opportunity to become a future companion. In addition to some much needed assimilation and rehabilitation, each pup is sterilized, vaccinated, microchipped, and, if necessary, treated for any medical problems.

The majority of Mikeys Chance dogs have been rescued from im-minent sentences from long-term tenure at regional shelters, while the remaining are either strays or abandoned by families who wish to rehome their pets. Adoptive parents of Mikeys Chance dogs are truly lifesavers.

Julie Saraceno's beautiful and evocative photos have helped pups like (clockwise from top) Missy, Little Robby, Timber, Kiki, and Chewy find homes with loving owners.

L IVE @ 5 SUMMER CONCERT SERIESMake Thursday night your favorite night

of the week with the Live @ 5 summer concert se-ries at John Dam Plaza in Richland. Starting at 5:00 p.m. every Thursday evening, a different band or artist of varying genres will give a free performance for Tri-Cities residents to enjoy. Each week offers something completely different, ensuring that no two shows will ever be the same.

Bring your own picnic or simply bring your ap-petite, as local vendors are typically in attendance serving up their namesake fare at favorable prices. These concerts are completely family friendly, so bring the kids or leave them with a sitter, the choice is all yours.

BONEFISH GRILLS PATIOIts no secret that Bonefish Grill off

of Gage Boulevard in Richland offers delectable menu items and inventive cocktails in a hip and lively atmosphere. If you have never had the chance to sip drinks on the patio, youre definitely missing out. The patio is open all summer long, including during luncha new addition in 2012.

What truly makes Bonefish Grill an ultimate out-door destination, though, is their live music. All summer long on select Wednesdays through Saturdays, patio patrons will be serenaded by argu-ably the best live acts in the Tri-Cities. Performers include the Velvetones, Wayman, Smooth as Jazz, Latin Fusion, Ruben, Tom Gnoza, and Romagosa Blue, just to name a few.

HIKE BADGER MOUNTAINFor those who like to blow a little post-

workday steam the healthy way, hiking Badger Mountains meticulously-maintained trails is the perfect way to take in sweeping views while getting in some cardio. With summer months staying light through the 21st hour, hikers can spend the better part of an evening covering the mountain.

For those who havent hiked Badger before, you can rest assured youll be in good hands. The hiking spot is a favorite amongst locals, offering varying difficulties and vantage points, with plenty of rest space and pristinely manicured pathways.

PATIO KOUZINA AT TAVERNA TAGARISAs far as outdoor dining goes, its hard

to beat the awesomely opulent terrace at the Tagaris tasting room. Diners find themselves in the midst of Mediterranean social life, with sizzling outdoor cooking stations firing up fresh plates, and jutting stone fountains filling the air with a series of splatters and splashes.

Although Friday and Saturday nights are the noto-riously happening hours at Kouzina, happy hour is arguably the best time to visit. All week long, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., take advantage of optimal pricing to sample all of the small plates, wines and libations their generous happy hour has to offer.

  • If all the builders in America used 5% more of the materials in their homes from companies who manufac-tured in the United States, it would generate 220,000 jobs, according to Anders Lewendal, a builder in

Bozeman, Montana who was once an economist. Thats a quarter of a million jobs created because of builders get-ting together and deciding to do some-thing for the greater good. This builder in Bozeman was challenging us. He was challenging the whole industry.

We decided to take the challenge, but instead of just shooting for 5%, we decided to build one home using 100% Built in America products. We had very little idea of what the increased costs were going to be and we didnt know what new suppliers we would be using for this project, but every single mem-ber of our Titan Team was on board, and were proud to be a part of it. After meet-ing with suppliers and subcontractors, it became ap-parent that 100% was not realistic. We believed 97-98% was a t ta inab le though, and that has proven true during this process.

As we write this article, we are about 80% of the way complete with our Built in America project. We have ordered al-most all of the materials for this project, even if they are yet to be installed, so we have been able to find suitable replace-ments for most of the foreign products we typically use in a home. Some of the issues weve had to address are the lim-ited selection and significant price in-creases of light fixtures, door hardware, appliances, and fasteners and nails.

Light fixtures, for example, increased our budget by about 400% and selec-tions were limited by 99%. Door hard-ware was a 1000% increase. Appliance selection was very limited, and even at that, most appliances are not fully pro-duced in America. We couldnt find a microwave made in America, so we in-stalled a custom vented wood hood to compensate. Of course, we do realize

that the future owners of this Built in America home might need a microwave, so we designed the kitchen to accom-modate a future microwave.

We dont intend on building all of our homes in the future using 97% of the products Built in America. The price increases we are seeing are significant. We need to remain competitive in the marketplace and we wont limit our cus-tomers ability to have a microwave, or a ceiling fan, or slab granite in their new home. That wasnt the purpose of this project.

The purpose of this project was to raise awareness that we, the people, have the ability to affect the outcomes of our lives. We are not innocent bystand-ers. If we think about something hard enough and long enough, and then ap-ply ourselves, we can create the change that we seek. If a whole industry comes together collectively and makes a cou-ple of small changes that equal 5%, we

    could make a huge dif-ference.

And it seems like our industry is taking the cha l lenge . More and more build-ers have decided to

consider the impact of 5% and have ap-plied their unique style to it. It seems to be taking hold.

And just think if this 5% motto was applied to all industriesautomakers, restaurants, paper companies, com-puter companies, home electronics, vet-erinarians, sports teams, etc. Two hun-dred and twenty thousand jobs could become 2.2 million jobs or more. With more jobs and fewer people to fill those roles, wages could climb, as employers would have fewer options to fill those roles. Five percent sure doesnt sound so insignificant, does it?

To say Im proud of the group of indi-viduals and companies who helped real-ize the goal we set would be a huge un-derstatement. Without their efforts, this would not have been possible and we'd like to thank everyone who contributed to our Built in America Project.

  • LOCAL ARTISANS

Once youve seen an aerial photo by David Wy-att, youll likely be among the many who step back and say, Wow! Ive never seen it from that perspective! Its a new perspective. An aerial perspective.

Wyatts portfolio of aerial images capture all of what is great about the Tri-Cities and the Mid-Columbia: from the Cable Bridge to the Clover Island Lighthouse, Water Fol-lies to Cool Desert Nights, Old Hanford to White Bluffs, wine country and autumn vineyards to colorful spring or-chards, from Red Mountain to Rattlesnake Mountain, and all of the mountains in a row.

Wyatts photography continues to win international honors for aerial landscape photos taken right here in the Mid-Columbia. In 2011, the Professional Aerial Photog-raphers Association (PAPA) International honored Wyatt with two Peoples Choice Awards for Red Mountain for Best Scenic Aerial Photograph and Best of Show. Heart-land, an aerial photo of a red barn surrounded by deep green wheat fields, won Peoples Choice for Best Artistic Aerial Photograph. In 2012 Wyatt won PAPAs Judges Choice Award for Best Scenic Aerial Photograph with his aerial panoramic of Rattlesnake Mountain at summer sun-set.

My favorite times to fly are sunrise and sunset, says Wyatt, during the golden hour. The air is calm, creating a stable platform for photography. The low sun angles cast long shadows with subtle but vibrant colors to highlight the desert features.

Aerial photographic images by David Wyatt are avail-able in Richland at the Allied Arts Gallery and CREHST Museum gift shop. A greater selection is now available in Kennewick at the new Wine & More, located with Z-Place at 36th & Highway 395. Wyatt will also be showing his aer-ial photographs at Art in the Park, July 27 & 28 in Howard Amon Park. A sampling of his collection of these aerial im-ages can also be viewed at www.loftics.com.

David Wyatt is the owner of LOFTICSan aerial photography company providing aerial images for websites, advertising, construction progress, and artistic prints.

    EASY WAYS TO

    ConserveConserveConserveWaterWaterWater

In todays world of being more environmentally aware, it is a good idea to be responsible with your watering practices. We have a dry, hot climate with irrigation networks that seem to provide unlimited water; however, it is a good idea to conserve the valuable resource. Here are some great ways to have a beautiful yard space but be water conscious.

    BY ALEX JOBOF JOB'S NURSERYS

The Perfect Move Magazine Summer 2012 Volume 5 Issue 216

  • S Reduce the Lawn SpaceThe lawn is the water hog of the landscape, because water has to be applied to every square foot of the lawn and it must be watered frequently to be kept happy. By reducing the square footage of the lawn to areas of play or entertaining, you are going to lower your weekly maintenance needs as well a big portion of your water usage.

S Shade the Yard with TreesTrees, though they need water themselves, can re-duce the lawns and other plantings water needs by cooling the air and ground by about 10 to 20F under their shadow or canopy. Cooler plants need less water to keep them hydrated. If you place trees to shade the roof of your home, it will reduce the need to run the AC by keeping the house 10 to 20 degrees cooler (which helps reduce your power bill in the summer).

S Prevent Run-OffRun-off is the worst waste of water that can happen. Run the system long enough to soak the area; if it begins to pool or create small streams, chances are you are watering too much per interval. It is okay to let the soil dry out a little. This also helps prevent root rots and develops stronger root systems. Ad-just your sprinklers to avoid watering your concrete surfaces so more water goes where it can be used.

S Adjust Your Watering CyclesDid you know lawns and shrubs dont need to be watered multiple times a day or even every day? Af-ter a plant has been growing for a year, you can wa-ter it for a longer duration but less frequently. This practice forces plants to develop a deeper root sys-tem to handle hotter conditions. To figure out how long a duration you need to run your system, time how long it takes to fill a tuna can to 1 deep, or when the ground begins to have run-off, whichev-er is the shortest time. Then adjust your yard timer

to run every other day for this duration and in the cooler parts of the day. Watering in the heat of the day is not recommended, because you must run the sprinklers longer to apply the same amount of wa-ter because the first amount of water will cool the ground through evaporation. It is helpful to adjust your run times to the temperature or windduring hotter temperatures, apply more water; during cool-er temperatures, apply less. By paying attention to temperature, you end up applying less water overall.

S Use Drip Irrigation or Soaker Hoses In Planting BedsThese watering systems only apply water where the plant is, instead of watering in broad strokes. You can adjust the amount of water each plant gets to allow for medium water-users to be mixed with low water-users or moderate water-users. This allows for you to plant your favorites while being water con-scious.

S Select Low to Moderate Water-Using OrnamentalsMost garden centers offer a variety of plants that handle low to moderate water applications. These plants have flowers, texture, and foliage interest that are more traditional in appearance to mainstream garden design techniques. For a list of plants that grow in our area, go to http://jobsnursery.com/knowledge-center/local-information.html.

You dont have to use all of these techniques, but every little bit helps and its very easy to adjust your practices to better share this valuable resource.

    Thank you and happy gardening!

Whenever I ask my clients whether they want to lose weight or fat, the answer is always the same. They want to lose fat! There are three steps to losing fat that must be followed in a very specific order.

The first and most important step in the process is nutrition. You need to know how many calories a day your body needs to use for energy. Take in either too much or too little, and your body will store the calories as fat. Knowing what percentage of calories come from protein, carbohy-drates, and fat is equally important.

The second step is weight training. Building lean muscle promotes overall health, develops strength and changes your body composition. The key compo-nent is training with enough intensity to stimulate muscle growth.

The third step would be to incorporate HIIT cardio into your weekly training program. (HIIT stands for "high intensity interval training" and means alternating periods of short, intense anaerobic exer-cise with less-intense recovery periods.) HIIT cardio is proven to oxidize more fat than other forms of cardio exercise.

  • HOBBY HUB$100 Laundry Room MakeoverJennifer Mead of the blog Blissfully Ever After shares how she made her laundry room look like a million bucks on a fraction of the budget

Hey there, everyone! To give you a little back-ground about our laundry room, it is so small that there was barely enough room to make our way in and out of the house without run-ning into something. The space was also dark and drab, lacking style and personality. My husband and I came up with the goal to complete the entire makeover for under $100. We love challenges, so we got right to work!

We took everything out of the spacewasher, dryer, cabinet doorsand prepped the walls and cabinets for painting. We painted the bottom of the wall and the cabinets Vermont Cream and then painted the top of the wall Crystal Blue. My husband measured and cut all of the woodwork for the walls. I then gave them a good 23 coats of Vermont Cream paint.

I decided to open up the space by leav-ing the middle cabi-net door off to cre-ate open shelving. We also removed the door that lead from the laundry room into the rest of our home which immediately opened up the space, added in more light and made it easier to pass through.

It was now time to put the cabinet doors back on, install hard-ware, and add the ac-cessories. This was the

fun part and how we really made the room come alive!I first "shopped the house" for some decor items to

create vignettes on the new open shelving. The galva-nized pot, jute twine, and vintage #26 tag were items I had on hand, so I paired them with some greenery pur-chased from Hobby Lobby to add in color and texture. I found the letter M at Craft Warehouse on sale for $5 and we already had the picture frame on hand. Shelf one complete! The two baskets were a steal of a find that I picked up at T.J.Maxx for around $12 for the pair, and both the ironing board sign and "Laundry Room Loads of Fun" signs were made by my husband and me. I found the ironing board cover from Tuesday Morning, and it is identical to the wall color. Crazy, right?I also found a similar patterned jute rug that made a great addition to the space and added some color to the beige blah tiled flooring.

I am here to prove that you can stretch the old mighty dollar and make your home beautiful on a budget. For only $100, we completely transformed this space in our home and it is now a place I do not mind doing laundry in.Cheers!

  • CRAVINGS

Theres something special go-ing on in the 500 square foot organic frozen yogurt shop that launched in Richland. You can almost feel it in the air at Finnegan Frost.

To begin with, this healthy start-up made waves by selling out of a weeks worth of product in less than two days during its Grand Opening weekend in mid-April, causing the owners to close their doors and regroup.

Its a great problem to have, said co-founder Matt Kincaid. It was a spe-cial feeling for all of us, and we made some bold moves to prepare for the future as a result.

Finnegan Frost debuted to rave reviews, both for its product and its brand, the likes of which the Tri-Cities isnt used to experiencing.

People regularly ask us if were a franchise, said co-founder Tyler Bor-ders. We designed this company to compete nationally. The three of us are home-grown Tri-Citians, and this is our flagship store, but we have a vision to introduce the country to farmstyle fro-zen yogurt.

Finnegan Frosts approach is unique, using only USDA Organic yogurt with a loaded nutritional profile and hand-churning it with organic ingredients. They source local fruit in-season, local honey and granola, natural toppings, and never any candy.

Were getting back to the farm, said co-founder Mike Miller, back to real, wholesome food. People deserve that.

Go get your frost, and if you have to wait in line, know that its worth it.

    Little Shop, Big Vision

Owners Tyler Borders of Richland, Matt Kincaid of Kennewick and Mike Miller of Pasco.

Visit Finnegan Frost at the corner of Gage and Keene, next to Starbucks in Richland. See finneganfrost.com for more information. They're open Sunday to Thursday from 10:00 a.m to 9:00 p.m., and 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

  • Shades of Tapteil

On the northern end of Sunset Road, atop illustrious Red Mountain, a tasting room beckons newcomers with its lush vineyard and charming estate. Tapteil Estate, origi-nally established in 1985, has gained regional popularity with both its impressive caliber of wines and its welcoming location.

Perfectly situated hillside, the outdoor terrace begs visitors to take advantage of the sweeping views while sipping vintages and noshing on home-packed picnics. The basalt fountain offers a tranquil soundtrack, and the Director of First Impressions, Argus the standard poodle, exudes a sense of home.

Of course the most compelling aspect of Tapteil Estates is their fine tasting selection. And it isnt just their acclaimed wines. Sample

and purchase a variety of articulately infused olive oils and vinegars to perfectly compliment your wines. Between tastings, admire the artistry of Jane Pearson, wife of Larry Pearson, Tapteils Wine Maker. The most affordable way to take her art home with you is on the label of their Syrah Artist Series.

The next bottling at Tapteil will take place June 9th,followed by a Vineclub members-only party. Vineclub members enjoy special savings and offers, as well as access to this annual party. Tapteil is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through December. The estate is located at 20206 E 583 PR NE, Benton City.

  • Kate Turner Waddido Unplugged

    THE HIGHLIGHT

Shes accomplished, talented, and beautifulinside and out. Her music is a reflection of that. We are talking about Tri-Cities rising country sensa-tion, Kate Turner.

Kate realized her love of music at age 4. She and twin sister, Meghan, were always singing and dancing as little girls. Today, as she pursues her musical career, she gets to do this for her growing fan base. She is booking gigs from Tri-Cities, to Spokane, to Nashville, even!

The talented singer/songwriter also plays piano, saxophone, and clarinetbasically, any

instrument that supports jazz. Although Kate performed in CBC jazz groups as a student, her love has always been country. When asked why, Kate says, Country storytelling is univer-sal and its always been natural for me.

Her hit single, 'Baby No,' came to her in the shower. I heard the melody, sang the words, jumped out to get paper and pen, and sat on the edge of the tub writing it.

Just as entertaining as she was during our interview, Kate certainly knows how to enter-tain a crowd. With natural charisma, along with her fun persona, Kate is definitely going placescountry style!

  • Bringing Games Back to the Table

Some of our fondest memories as children were of sitting around the table for family game night, nestled in bed having a book read to us, or of our parents showing us how to do just about anything. These days, video games, televi-sion and cell phones seem to have brought those treasured events to a halt.

Adventures Underground in the Richland Uptown begs to differ.Housing thousands of new and used books, an impressive col-

lection of comic books, board games youve never even heard of, and toys galore, Adventures Underground is a fresh breath of air in an otherwise electronically-inundated atmosphere. The bright and lively shop and welcoming wag of the tail from resident Irish Wolf-

hound/German Shepard, Charley, will have you spending hours browsing without even realizing it.

Professional gamers can rest easy knowing Adventures Under-ground carries game expansions, spare and additional parts, game accessories, card sleeves and boxes, dice and bags, and even ap-parel. A dedicated gaming area has been set up in the back of the store with tables to use at shoppers disposal.

In addition to their unique offering of activities perfect for individuals and families alike, the store holds weekly and monthly demonstrations, events and tournaments for kids of any age.
