Hello Division 18! It has been an honour working with you all for the past year and I hope to end my term on a positive note at DCON!

With March approaching quickly, it is necessary to prepare for the convention and make sure we are ready to show the entire District how spirited and passionate Division 18 is about Key Club!

Despite the ending of my term, I wish that we all can continue working together and ensure the Key Club year ends successfully!

MEET BANEET BRAICHDIV 18 2015/16 LTG

Hello Division 18,

Bring the passion, take the lead, working together we will succeed! I’m looking forward to the experience of being your new LTG and to be meeting all you bright, wonderful key clubbers!  I’m a proud panther at Abby Senior Secondary and have been devoted to Kiwanis since grade 8. It is an honor to be elected lieutenant governor of district 18 and I’m excited to see what our division can accomplish.

Volunteering in the community signifies passion and I feel it’s important to be passionate about what you choose to do. I’ve competed in public speaking for 5 years and love meeting new people! Broadcasting is one of my main passions and I absolutely love anchoring the school news.  For the past 3 years I have also participated and competed in Science Fair both regionally and nationally, and am now in the process of conducting an environmental study. I enjoy being involved with leadership class as it develops my leadership skills which I feel are very important. Other passions of mine include baking, cooking, photography, reading, singing, and watching movies.  Whether it be saying “ballislife” (sports) or “schooliscool” (academics) I am a hard worker who tries to put her best effort in all she does. Sometimes the life of a student means sleeping at 1am from doing homework or waking at 5 am to study for that final but I’m able to pull through with the help and support from my friends, family and teachers!

As per my goals and aims for division 18, it’s about collaboration amongst all our different high schools towards charitable organizations. Here at Abby Senior we are passionate towards charitable organizations such as Free the Children, Grace Rwanda,  and The 30 Hour Famine is the largest project and one of my favourites as well. The Eliminate Project is definitely something our clubs can collaborate on and it’s up to you bright members of what it is you want to pursue with different charitable organizations. DCON is an event I’m definitely looking forward to and hope to have some great monthly DCM’s!

I realize being lieutenant governor is going to be an eye opening experience that is going to allow me to meet some brilliant minds and help make a difference in the world. Opportunities allow us to engage upon new adventures and I’m anxious and excited  to experience what this fantastic adventure with all of you will bring!

The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Neonatal tetanus kills one

baby every nine minutes—nearly 60,000 newborn children every year. A significant number of women also die due to maternal tetanus. The effects of the

disease are excruciating—tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme

sensitivity to light and touch.

To eliminate MNT from the Earth, 129 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized.

This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take $110 million—and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family.

Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant public health successes of the 20th

century. Now, together, they are eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. In doing so, the project will reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional lifesaving health care. The

end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families.

ABBY SR. SECONDARY

For January, our club was able to celebrate all that we have done this year. We had a meeting where we looked back on all our progress, and we were able to reflect on what we want to do for the rest of the year. During January, the 55th Annual Snowball Tournament was hosted at Abbotsford Senior. So we hosted a Bake Sale where we sold cookies with basketballs on them that said “Snowball 2015.” Karene Luu, Vice President of our club, planned for Free the Children to come to our school and host an assembly and workshop! It was very successful, and many were inspired by the assembly. We are now planning Thirty Hour Famine and We are Silent!

ROBERT BATEMAN SECONDARY

The month of January has been a relatively slow month for Bateman Key Club with the closing of the holiday seasons and exams. During this period of time, the Bateman executives have been working hard at getting DCON forms completed and sent as well as prepare for elections in early March. For the month of February, we plan on volunteering at the Abbotsford Food Bank, helping with the Kiwanis Volleyball Tournament, as well as fundraise for DCON.

I’m very pleased with our club’s accomplishments this month. Members volunteered on January 10th at the Kiwanis soup kitchen, helping prepare and serve food. We wrapped up fundraising for DCON with two pizza sales and finished selling the rest of our chocolate-covered almonds. Eight members are going to DCON this year. We also held two bake sales for the Rice Raiser charity during the last week of January. Our club is participating in Kiwanis’s annual Coldest Night of the Year walk on February 21st, and so far we’ve raised $775. Elections for our new executive board will be held February 10th and 17th.

Garibaldi Secondary

For the month of January, the Garibaldi Key Club held a game night on January the 25th from 2-4 pm at the Maple Ridge Library. The event was centered around inviting new members to join the club because the new year has just started and most people decide to join clubs and do something productive with their lives at this time! The event did not follow through as we expected, seeing as not that many people came. However, we made the best of it with the people who did come and had a lot of fun! This event was brand new and we wanted to try it out and see if it would be successful, as a club we learnt that game nights outside of school don’t really attract people, and as a result, we now know not to host an event like that and we continue to grow as a club. Also, this upcoming month, we plan to have a bake sale in Haney Place Mall from 10am-2pm on Valentine’s Day. We will be fundraising for a new project that our vice president, Petr Arutyunov came up with. If you have ever passed by the part of City Hall in Maple Ridge that has the library, you have seen the big clock tower we have. The clock tower has a mechanical horse on top of it that neighs, snorts or moves it legs every quarter hour- at least it did. Some years ago the horse broke down, but the city did not have the funds to cover the repair costs. The horse is still there but it does not move every quarter hour, thus Petr thought of partnering with the Thomas Haney club and raising funds to fix it. The club really likes this idea because it will directly affect their lives and will become an icon in our city that we drive past every day which says that the Garibaldi Key Club cares about its community.
