Mock Senate - OverviewEach speaker will design a piece of legislation that will address a problem or issue that requires resolution.   As per the Constitution, the power of Congress is to create legislation (in conjunction with the House of Representatives) in the hopes of sending the final bill to the President so that it can be signed into law.

Speaking FormatInside your groups you will pair off with one other senator.

Each pair will create bill/plan that will be argued--for and against your topic--during the mock Senate Legislative Committee.

Each speaker will be invited to participate in floor debate and voting  Visual aids are optional (but will be limited to either small posters or handouts—no power-point)   The sessions will consist of a schedule of bills, formal presentations, and floor debate.

Speaking Format Continued...

Each senator will be responsible for their own individual persuasive speech.   There are two key expectations for the Mock Senate Sessions: present & defend/attack a bill, and participate in the floor debate.   Each individual persuasive speech will be prepared from an outline and presented on a designated day.  After the presentations, there will be an allotted block of time set aside for floor to debate and discussion. Our Mock Senate Committee will vote yes or no on each bill—the outcome of the vote will have no influence on points or letter grades

Floor Debate

Present Senators can volunteer to give short affirmative or negative speeches (for or against) the bill in question.  Your instructor will be keeping notes on who speaks up during floor debate.

Speaking in PublicThis assignment is designed to help connect the theory discussed in class with rhetoric in our everyday lives. You will do “research” for this assignment by scheduling ONE HOUR of time to observe some form of speaking activity

The activity you choose must be something you do for this class and this class alone. If you normally go to Catholic Mass you cannot do Catholic Mass for this assignment. If you are going to hear a motivational speaker already, you cannot do that for this assignment.
