UHHS pays tribute to Ruth Pollock
The Phoenix
Many of you will know that Ruth Pollock our Vice Chair of Governors sadly died during the summer. Ruth’s contribution to the school
and the wider community for over 40 years has been exemplary. Her funeral took place on Tuesday the 3rd October and was attended
by many people who wanted to show their respect and gratitude for Ruth’s work, including staff, pupils and the school band and choir.
The school closed early to enable school to be appropriately represented as our mark of our respect for the contribution Ruth made to
many children over a significant number of years at Up Holland High School. Our thoughts are with Ruth’s friends and family during
this difficult time.

Up Holland Music news Festival of Music - This year has been the 39th Anniversary of the Festival of music (formally known as the proms) and it has been
the best so far. Through the course of 3 nights, Up Holland music department welcomed over 800 performers from primary to college
education to perform in the annual summer event. Each school performed their own take of the theme ‘Music from Stage and Screen.’
We had a variety of amazing performances from Broadway to Disney with each performance dazzling and amazing the audience.
Tickets were in high demand from the local community to watch the outstanding young musicians from the following primary schools
and college:
Crawford Primary School
St Thomas the Martyr
Newfold Primary School
Holgate Academy Primary
St John Rigby College music department
Holland Moor Primary School
Chapel End Primary School
Phoenix Stars Academy
A special thank you goes to all the performers from the primary schools and colleges for their tireless work, dedication and
enthusiasm which they showed throughout the evenings. A big thank you goes to all the teachers and inspirers who helped the pupils
achieve the very best performance and realise their true potential. There were some memorable highlights of the concert too from
our own performers. The choir, led my Mrs Worthington, performed two very special pieces featuring talented soloists in the
ensemble of Amelie Galbraith and also Rebecca Houghton. Mrs Worthington has been an exceptional leader with the choir this year
and started the festival off on the right note with ‘Run’ and also ‘You Raise Me Up.’ The unplugged ensemble which features
prominent soloists in the department showcased their talents in a variety of genres. A special well done goes out to the following
soloists of the unplugged ensemble Emily Wallis, Amelie Galbraith, Rebecca Houghton, Ratcliffe, Ayse Inel and Charlotte Moran. The
festival also featured the much loved brass ensemble performing their version of I dreamed a dream. In particular a special well done
goes to Lucy Farrelly, Bethany Roberts, Emma Harrington and Joe Cooper for their dedication to the ensemble and helping to lead
it. The school concert band concluded the festival with a selection of music from James Bond, Chicago and also Les Miserable.
Joel Whittington, a trumpeter from year 10, performed Bring Him Home accompanied by the band. Well done Joel on your moving
performance.
The music department looks forward to welcoming you to the 40th festival of music next year and to other performances throughout
the year. Keep check the music department twitter account for further performances and news in the coming term.

Lessons for Life Key stage 4 pupils were given lessons for life on the last Stop the
Clock Day which was particularly useful for year 11 pupils. They
were given lessons in financial management, and up to date
information regarding applying for mortgages as well as how to
achieve a part time job.
Guest speaker and Life Coach Luke Askew delivered a fantastic
presentation about having the right mind set to succeed in life.
He bravely shared stories about how he faced his own challenges
in life and managed to turn his life around by adopting a more
positive mind set. Instead of seeing every setback as a failure, he
now regards them as a challenge that he is determined to meet.
A former pupil, Tom
Aitchison also delivered a
powerful presentation
about how boxing helped
him make something of his
life. He even invited several
pupils to join him on stage
for a bit of sparring. Some
great lessons learned!

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY COMES TO UP HOLLAND On the 26th June several able, gifted and talented pupils from Years 7 – 10 were joined
by six other Lancashire schools to listen to a talk by Grace Dickinson, the Liaison Officer
from Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. The aim of the talk was to raise awareness of
University life, courses and entry requirements. During the talk, pupils had common
myths dispelled about the cost of university, the benefits of attending and the many
activities to be enjoyed there. Pupils also had the opportunity to ask questions and
enquire about courses they may be interested in in the future. Many thanks to Grace
for coming all the way from Cambridge to speak to visiting pupils and the AGT pupils of
Up Holland.
Orienteering success Mrs Kenyon’s, Mrs Thompson's and Mrs Cooney's All Star Orienteering Team won the District KS3 Orienteering competition at Tarleton High and have qualified for the Lancashire School Games in Blackpool in July! Here's a champions photo (with Harry Smith behind the camera). Mrs Thompson will happily give you a rendition of We Are The Champions on the corridor if you see her.
Paris 2017 Paris 2017 Paris 2017 Paris 2017 Paris 2017 Paris 2017 We have recently visited Paris; 4 days jam-packed with exciting activities.
On the first evening we all went to a typical French restaurant and while
most of us ordered Spag-bol (Mrs Ward was not impressed), Iskren,
Charlotte, Sophie and Abbie ate some snails. They said it was all right but
Sam almost passed out looking at it. On day two we went to Disney and
thought we would never stop screaming on the Tower of Terror. Really, it
was a lot of fun! On day three, we went up the Eiffel Tower (big job), visited
a museum (all right) and went shopping on the Champs-Elysees (Mackie’s!
Sephora!). On the last night, we ordered pizza and went swimming at the
hotel pool (yes, the hotel was really nice) - by Ellie, Ayse, Amelie and Eve.
Well done to 7EJL (Mr Lyon’s
form last year) for raising the
most money for the school
improvements back in July. Their
prize was private a BBQ.

Well done to these pupils last year!
MINI MASTERS
Fifteen Year Nine pupils from Up Holland were invited to
the first ever Mini Masters event hosted by Ormskirk High
School last week. Able, gifted and talented pupils from
eight different schools across Lancashire, met to listen to
two keynote speakers: Doctor Stuart Wood PHD, an expert
in Music Therapy and Joanna Barnard, an accomplished
author of fiction.
The aim of the morning was to challenge pupils ideas
about what success means and to experience three
seminars of their choosing on fascinating topics outside of
the National Curriculum. The day was designed to
challenge pupils perceptions of themselves and to
appreciate that goals and dreams can be achieved even
when obstacles are put in the way. Both speakers had
enjoyed successful careers before changing direction
unexpectedly, achieving their goals and achieving their
own version of ‘success’.
After listening to the keynote speakers, pupils branched
off into their own areas of interest which included CSI
Investigations into Jack the Ripper, how music cures
people with long term injuries or trauma and a session on
The Hunt for the God Particle.
After enjoyable three sessions and a lunch together, pupils
took part in a question and answer session with the
keynote speakers. Pupils listened with great enthusiasm
and interest asking sensitive questions, bringing the whole
day to a very positive end.
Many thanks to Mrs Helen Brown (Ormskirk High School)
and Mr Steve Barnard (Tarleton High School) for their
collaborative skills and organisation of what was an
amazing day and to the many pupils who took part and
were fantastic representatives for the school.
New Lego club
up and running
We have now started a new
Lego club on a Monday lunch
time with Mrs Johnson (parent)
where all pupils can develop their fine motor skills and creativity while
having a relaxing social occasion too. Watch out also for other new
clubs such as chess and board game club.
