CARVING THROUGHOUT THE UPSTATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA 2

THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER

The  bylaws  of  our  club  state  that  the  membership  elects  the  Executive  Board.    At  their  ;irst  meeting,  the  Board  itself  chooses  who  shall  work  at  which  jobs  for  the  coming  year.    That  ;irst  meeting  has  taken  place  and  the  responsibilities  have  been  assigned.    Being  chosen  as  president  of  our  club  is  both  a  thrilling  and  frightening  experience.    I  am  thrilled  to  have  the  opportunity  to  serve  our  club  in  yet  another  capacity  and  a  little  frightened  that  I  may  not  measure  up  to  the  of;icers  of  the  past.    I  plan  to  lean  on  both  the  board  and  the  membership  to  direct  our  course  this  year.

One  course  I  think  we  all  want  to  follow  is  to  become  a  better  carver.    How  do  we  grow  as  carvers?    By  carving,  of  course!    Commit  to  coming  to  watching  more  experienced  carvers  at  the  weekly  evening  meetings.    Groups  meet  on  both  Wednesday  and  Thursday  evenings  in  our  room  at  the  Mauldin  Cultural  Center.    Informal  instruction  happens  every  week.    Visit  our  member,  John  Moore,  in  his  demonstration  shop  in  downtown  Greenville  which  is  open  Tuesdays  throughSaturdays.    Participate  in  the  seminars  that  our  club  and  regional  organizations  offer.    The  board  is  planning  this  year’s  classes  now.    Suggest  good  teachers  or  projects  you  would  like  to  tackle.    Our  members  are  offering  instruction  through  the  Mauldin  Cultural  Center.    The  John  C.  Campbell  Folk  School  (https://www.folkschool.org)  catalog  features  several  classes.    Travel  to  see  great  carving  at  local  and  regional  carving  shows  and  vendors.        Our  great  friend  and  sister  club,  the  Charlotte  Woodcarving  Club,  sponsors  their  annual  show  and  carving  competition  February  17-‐19,  2012.    I  encourage  everyone  to  attend  at  least  one  day  of  this  show.      The  registration  form  is  on  their  website  at  http://charlottewoodcarvers.com/show/  and  the  theme  is  “Tom  Wolfe  Carving  Traditions.”    Another  travel  opportunity  is  the  Florida  Woodcarvers  Roundup,  March  20-‐23,  at  the  Long  Center  in  Clearwater,  Florida.    Visit  the  website  at  www.webspace.webring.com/people/qj/jeodea  for  class,  activity,  and  registration  information.    One  of  the  coordinators  is  Tony  Erickson,  a  member  from  Seneca,  SC.    This  year  they  will  offer  a  chainsaw  carving  class!    A  ;inal  way  to  become  a  better  carver  is  to  read.    Read  the  monthly  newsletter.    Read  the  suggestions  and  links  on  the  club  website  (http://piedmontwoodcarvers.com).    Consider  subscribing  to  magazines  that  provide  patterns  and  instruction.    Look  on  the  club’s  website  for  a  good  list.    While  you  are  doing  all  these  things,  do  them  in  a  club  tee  shirt  or  golf  shirt.    You  can  even  sew  a  club  patch  on  your  own  ball  cap  or  shirt!    See  Tom  Gow  to  get  your  size  and  style.    Your  support  of  this  fundraiser  helps  the  club  promote  ourselves  in  the  community.

As  you  become  a  better  carver,  I  hope  you  will  grow  in  participation  in  our  club.    For  your  dues  of  only  $2.50  a  month,  you  receive  use  of  the  room  and  the  equipment,  ;irst  chance  to  register  for  seminars  and  workshops,  a  monthly  newsletter  full  of  interesting  and  helpful  carving  news,  a  website  with  links  to  tips,  tools,  and  carving  vendors,  and  an  opportunity  to  rub  shoulders  with  our  nationally  rated  carvers.    Take  advantage  of  these  bene;its  for  the  future  of  the  club  depends  on  your  growing  experience  and  skills!

ONE SPACE OPEN IN DESIREE HAJNY

CLASSThe Charlotte Wood Carvers has just notified us of a space open in Desiree Hajny class. Power carving, wood burning & painting involved. She has proven herself as an artist and an instructor. Highly recommended class.

The Charlotte Woodcarvers Club will have Desi Hajny will be teaching a 2 1/2 day class in Charlotte on February 24-26, 2012.  This will be Friday evening and all day on Saturday and Sunday.  Bill Dominick is coordinating this class with Desi and has all the details.  We have one opening available due to a participant having a personal conflict.  If you haven't taken a course from Desi, this will be an opportunity to do so.  We are not able to get someone of Desi's reputation very often.  If you or any of your club members are interested, please let Bill know or you can contact me as well. Desi will be at our Showcase of Woodcarvings on February 17-19 and will be demonstrating, displaying and selling. Looking forward to seeing you and all you club members in

SHARON HADDOX BOARD MEMBER

FOR 2012SHE’S GONNA KILL ME FOR USING THE PHOTO WITH THE GLASSES!

Sharon has been a PWCC member since late 2010. She is originally from West Virginia but now resides in Simpsonville. When asked what her favorite type of carving was She said she wasn’t sure yet. She attends most Wednesday night carve - ins and has taken a number of seminars.

Her prime responsibility as a board member is EDUCATION, so if you have seminar suggestion please let her know.

She’s always busy, Grandchildren and all that, plus working hard to keep George out of trouble. Sharon is picture below during Mauldin’s Spring Fling.

JIM WOODS BOARD MEMBER 2011 - 2012

Jim Woods has been a club member since 2009. He joined the PWCC shortly after he began carving. He is from New Hampshire but now lives in Williamston, South Carolina.

Jim’s primary responsibility as a board member is Membership. He is also 2012 Show Co-Chairperson.

He has been very active in the club, helping out at public events and taking part in many seminars.

His favorite type of carving is Bark carving, both the cottages and spirit faces. Here’s another photo of Jim, this was at the Swap Rabbit Children’s Art Festival.

EUGENE BLAKE BOARD MEMBER

NEWEST MEMBER TERRY MERSICH

WELCOME!Terry has a big smile in the photo above and that pretty well defines her. We are happy to have her join us. She is active in the Duncan group on Monday nights and in Mauldin on Wednesday nights. Even though she has tried a lot of different styles of carving she has not settled on a favorite. Wednesday night she was working on an Intaligo relief.

Terry grew up in Southbend Indiana and has recently relocated to Moore, South Carolina. She joined our club in January and has been carving since 2006.

Her most embrassing moment!

She had just completed her first (and last) skydiving jump when she walked into the spinning propeller of an airplane. She wasn’t too bothered when it destroyed her helmet, but boy was she upset when they sued her for damages to the propeller.

WELCOME, you should feel right at home!
