The Play-Away Appealfor visually-impaired and blind children at
Al-Shurooq School in Palestine
• Aim: to help blind and visually-impaired children between the ages of 3-14 learn the skills they need to become independent.
• But none of the students have had a normal childhood.

• Also, disabled children are in many cases– ignored – marginalised and isolated
• In some cases, families hide them as they are considered a shame and a disgrace.
Abdullah has been a pupil at Al-Shurooq School for 2 years.
When he was 4 someone hit Abdullah very hard on the head. He cannot remember who, but it plunged him into a world of darkness and fear.
With no sight, his family began to viewhim as a burden. He was sent to Al-Shurooq School for his care andprotection.
When he arrived, he was lonely and frightened. Only with love, support and play has Abdullah started to smile again.
Meet Abdullah Mazen Ali Shkeirat
Ra’fat is 6 and has been a pupil at Al-Shurooq School for 3 years.
He has bilateral retinal detachment and is totally blind.
Ra’fat’s father used to work as a labourer in Israel but at present he is without a job, due to the current travel restrictions and difficulty in entering Israel from Palestine.
Meet Ra’fat Nidal Jiyawi
The family lives in a small house of two rooms with very poor sanitary conditions.
Ra’fat is an extremely bright child and is quite independent for his age. He needs to stay at Al-Shurooq School for at least another four years, when he becomes as independent academically as he is with his daily living skills.
