I attended the GRAND LODGE CONVENTION in Reno, Nevada and it was formidable and well-presented. The Grand Lodge Officers were all introduced and presented their reports on the past year in a timely man-ner. Nominations were made on Tuesday as were voting resolutions. Results are postd on our bulletin board. The Installation of officers took place Wednesday. It was empha-sized that the 150th anniversary of the Elks will be on February 16, 2018. The Grand Lodge is planning on publicizing who and what Elks are and what we do. In addition, Grand Lodge is giving each lodge a $1500. grant to use for lodge programs such as veterans, drug awareness, scouts, etc. I still need our members to step up and help by volunteering for functions and committees. Earl Boyd ER & PER

As our fifth month of this lodge year is now upon us, I found it easy to name an “Elk of the Month” for August. Greg Rill has been taking care of the lodge property for some time. In July, he ar-ranged for and planted the new trees that are around the border and in some of the areas in the parking lot. He set in the sprinklers and drip lines throughout the lot and made sure they worked. This took place during several days of 100+ degree temperatures. It was a job WELL DONE!

Did you know ? (conclusion) In 1948, leather hides were provided to 21 VA hospitals,

beginning the Leather Program which still exists today. This occu-pational and recreational therapy program provides thousands of pairs of high quality fingerless gloves to veterans who are confined to wheelchairs.

During the Korean War in 1950 as well as subsequent con-flicts in Vietnam, Desert Storm, and currently the Middle and Far East, Elks are still sending gift packs just as they had during World War II.

In response to the civil unrest and homeland anti-American demonstrations during the Vietnam war, Elks began a “Letters from Home” campaign expressing gratitude for the sacrifices these sol-diers were making. The Elks were one of the first organizations to formally welcome home veterans from Operation Desert Storm.

In 1997, the Elks National Veterans Service Commission began providing financial support for the National Veterans Winter and Summer Sports Clinics, Wheelchair Games, Golden Age Games, and the TEE Tournaments.

In 2001, delegates at the National Convention in Philadel-phia voted to amend our pledge to “So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them,” removing the words, “in our hospitals,” and expanding reach to all veterans.

Elks and Bugles Across America in 2002 began working together to make sure that Taps is played for the funerals of the 3000 veterans per month who are making their final journey home.

In 2003, Elks began a program named The Army of Hope providing temporary financial relief, household maintenance, care-giving, food and necessities for families of National Guard and Mili-tary Reserve units that were deployed overseas.

Freedom Grants of $2000 were established in 2011 to Lodges for the purpose of providing comfort and care to Veterans in hospitals, long term care facilities, and at home to families, in addi-tion to helping homeless veterans by providing housing, clothing and necessities.

And the story continues...the Elks’ history of service is proud.

We want to keep you up to date on the things you don’t want to miss. This includes the events, dinners, upcoming programs and community events. If you are not getting the Email-Blasts, and YOU have Email, “You Are Missing Out”. Currently, 48 Elks are not getting the Blasts. If you have Email and have not been getting our Blasts, we do not have your email address in our files. LODGE NEW SOUND SYSTEM REPORT If you decided to stay home this past Friday night in order to beat the heat, you missed a terrific pot luck. The crowd was small but the food was plentiful and delicious. And, to boot, we raised $222.00 for our new sound sys-tem! John Garrett won the 50/50 raffle and turned his winning of $38 back to the lodge. Way to go John. Thank you for your generosity! We will be planning another fund raiser potluck in the future so keep checking your calen-dar. Remember: you snooze you lose. So far we have reached our first milestone and have raised a total of $1185.00. Of course, we have a long way to go but if you are in the lounge, sign up for a donation toward the new PA sound system for our lodge. Everyone knows we really... really need one. And remember this is one way in which you can help your lodge.

Lodge House Committee Report AUGUST 2017

.. The House Committee met on July 20th. There were many topics that needed to be addressed. Some of the high-lights were: 1. The beverage guns in the lounge have been upgraded. Two lines were added and we now offer SWEETENED AND UNSWEETENED ICED TEA. 2. The next lounge improvement will be an upgrade of the Draft Beer Trees. We will be offering 4 draft beverag-es instead of 3 in the near future. The committee would like to hear what the membership would like. Hard Cider or different draft beer selections? Let us know. 3. Lounge hours have been expanded to include Wednesdays 11 to 3pm. 4. In the hopes of attracting more help for the kitchen it was decided to offer KITCHEN 101 classes similar to the class we are offering in the lounge. Come find out how the kitchen works and help us provide the membership with quality restaurant type meals. 5. Food and beverage costs and controls were dis-cussed. Plans are being implemented to give members quality service at a reasonable cost. Any comments or suggestions are always welcome. Con-tact us through the lodge or email me at [email protected]

Have you noticed the newest additions to the grounds of 2484? Greg Rill upgraded the water system to the flower beds and borders around the building and the City of Rancho Cordova donated and planted 21 trees. Greg has cleaned up the flower beds to a substantial degree, which are awaiting adoption by Elk volunteers.
