In the poster the hand looks like it’s controlling the girl and has a hard grip on her face. It also looks like she’s screaming and wants to get away. This shows that there is violence involved in the film, which follows the codes and conventions of a horror film.

‘August 31st’ is written in red, which connotes blood, evil, and danger. This is done to tease the audience and build anticipation for what is to come as they have put the date on the poster.

The ‘based on a true story’ can attract the audience are they are aware that the plot will be using true facts. This is likely to create an enigma and evoke a higher sense of fear believing that something like this actually happened.

Typical posters had a dark background with light writing to limit vision and create the fear of the unknown, this poster however breaks the codes and conventions and uses bright lighting so we can see everything, and this could be used to create a shocked reaction to show perhaps to show the detail which makes it look realistic helping to provoke fear.

The bright lighting could be used to show the ‘normal’ part of the film, which is also known as the equilibrium when everything is normal in the film, which is what normally happens in horror films, which are then followed by the disequilibrium.

However, the further down the poster the darker it appears perhaps to indicate darkness taking over.

In the film, they had a little girl to play the main character, which follows the codes and conventions of a typical horror film. A female is mostly presented as vulnerable and weaker to danger.

In addition, by using such a ‘normal’ looking character it makes the audience almost imagine themselves in that situation which of course will create a high level of fear.
