The council was represented by sev- eral officials and three councillors, Lionel Petersen, Jacqui Church and Willy Hayes, as well as Waikato District Mayor, Allan Sanson. Communication appeared the biggest point of contention for many of the new- er residents, as they discovered they had missed the entire Long Term Plan consul- tation process earlier this year. This was part of the process which forms the basis for the level of rates council charges all property owners. Large chang- es in their rates, compared to the previous year, appeared without warning, which included charges for items they believed they had paid their property developer for. Many said an advance warning of a rates rise would have been appreciated. Council says for a number of proper- ties, big increases could be explained as in previous years, rates were derived on part value of the property. For an exam- ple, the rates were charged solely on the section, before the house had been built. Rates are charged on capital value and even if land value does not go up, when a house is built the capital value as a whole increases. Without a house, water and wastewater charges are also much low- er initially, and have sometimes kicked in long after the house was built. In some cases, water charges are still catching up, resulting in a bill for two and half years in one hit. Council is working on a brochure for new residents and property owners and will, in future, include information on pending changes in LIM reports. The brochures will go to all developers and builders to give to potential buyers. Council representatives present also explained that rates pay for the mainte- nance of pipes and services that the de- velopers have put in as it becomes the Council’s job to maintain these. Council rates are based on capital value from July 1, 2015, so if the improvements took place shortly after, charges do not ap- ply until the following year. The Council’s budget is based on as- sumptions of growth in the district. Po- keno is growing much faster than expect- ed or planned for and some services, like footpaths, are lagging behind. The issue home owners in Pokeno are experiencing is something Waikato Dis- trict Council has never been faced before. It is clear that methods used by Council to communicate to residents are not been effective enough. “We really want to work with you, and it is sad that there is so much disconnec- tion with what we are currently doing. We have tried very hard to involve residents in our processes through brochures, let- ters, signs, newspaper ads, community meetings, workshops, and visits to the lo- cal markets,” said Tony Whitaker, Waikato District Council’s General Manager, Strat- egy and Support. “Clearly expectations around rate levels have not been met, but we did not raise those expectations, nor did we desig- nate Pokeno as a growth area. Within 12 months of becoming a part of our district, we began to realise the growth within Po- keno was much faster than we had esti- mated in the 30 year plan.” Mayor, Allan Sanson, said it meant an entire new town was being built in record time and council processes are trying to catch up. Mr Sanson also said that from his own ex- perience many smaller councils charge rates higher than the Waikato District. The Pokeno Community Committee is currently working with council on behalf of residents. Emma’s DeskA note from

Last week, I learnt a very valu-able lesson — not to leave every-thing to last minute.

They say that things usually happen in threes and that was certainly the case for me.

Lesson one was to not leave writing your column to four hours before the newspaper goes to print. The boss man, Ste-ve, found it highly amusing that several sentences didn’t actually make sense, and he hasn’t let me forget it all week.

Lesson two was not to leave booking your hotel room to at-tend your God sister’s wedding to several days out, as you some-how end up with two bookings for the same night.

And lesson number three was to not leave catching up with family until someone gets mar-ried. Last weekend I was priv-ileged enough to be invited to witness my God sister, Briar, wed her sweetheart, Lawrence. I was also asked to be a part of the brid-al party which was a huge honour.

It was a perfect and special day, filled with much love, happiness and breathless emotion.

For me, the emotion I felt when realising how many family mem-bersand friends that I hadn’t seen for years was very raw. It made me understand just how time never stops for anyone. Lives can get so busy and focus is so much on work and a daily routine that be-fore you know it, six years has passed and your niece is sudden-ly 13 years old and taller than you!

This week has been a valuable learning curve in more ways than one, and I intend to try and make more time for friends and family in the future.

The day has come where we farewell our intrepid reporter, Ja-nine Baalbergen. While she won’t be writing for us on a weekly ba-sis, Janine will occasionally be gracing our pages with her fan-tastic contributions. We wish her all the best for her future endeav-ours.

Don’t forget to check out our calendar page for all the amaz-ing events happening this long weekend.

Let every step toward a marriage alliance be characterized by modesty, simplicity, sincerity, and an earnest purpose to please and honour God. Marriage affects the afterlife both in this world and in the world to come. A sincere Christian will make no plans that God cannot approve. {AH 49}

The family tie is the closest, the most tender and sacred, of any on earth. It was designed to be a blessing to mankind. And it is a blessing wherever the marriage covenant is entered into intelligently, in the fear of God, and with due consideration for its responsibilities. Every home should be a place of love, a place where the angels of God abide, working with softening, subduing influence upon the hearts of parents and children. {AH 18}

It is only in Christ that a marriage alliance can be safely formed. Human love should draw its closest bonds from divine love. Only where Christ reigns can there be deep, true, unselfish affection. {AH 68}

A customer came into our office last week, with a photograph complaining about vehicles constantly parking in the disabled parking bays on Bowen Street. It is so often the case and shortly after the photograph was taken, another vehicle casually pulled into the same bay – this time a delivery vehicle. The custom-er now concludes that, if the people who parked in this disabled parking bay were disabled when parking, then we need to inform

“I have had a response to the questions I asked on your be-half regarding the angle of the intersection at Collingwood and Kitchener Roads,” says Andrew Baker. I asked AT to undertake an assessment of it based on the concerns you raised in your ar-ticle and to look at crash history and engineering. AT have un-dertaken the assessment. They state that the angle of the inter-section requires drivers to stop to check for through traffic on Collingwood Road. In the past five years there has been only two reported crashes at this intersection but that neither of them actually involved turning traffic. They looked at the merits of changing the markings to better align traffic on Kitchener with Collingwood. However they believe, in their experience, this can often create more issues than the current one, particularly with the relatively good safety record. So the end result is that the in-tersection does not warrant a change. The safety team at AT be-lieve it should stay the same and that drivers will have to contin-ue to be appropriately cautious.

The person was able to jump out of the car, grab a parcel and dart into one of the shops. Hallelujah, it’s a miracle! We think not! When are people go-ing to respect disabled parking bays.

End of an era for TrustBill Deed - [email protected]

ll The final resolution of the Barbara Hull Charitable Trust was enacted last week, when the disclosing trust vested its remaining funds into the Franklin Hospice Charitable Trust.

The Barbara Hull Trust donated almost $10,000 to the Hospice last week.

“It has been increasingly difficult for us to raise funds in recent years, and med-ical conditions that we used to fund are now being covered by present government or hospital funding,” explained Graham Craig, Chairman of the Barbara Hull Chari-table Trust.

Graham said he is sad that the Trust is closing, but he is happy that the remaining funds are being given to an organisation that has the same objectives that they did.

After a year-long training programme and four coaching workshops later, Rachell Prestidge has graduated from the Global Messenger class for the Special Olympics New Zealand.

Emma Sharplin

ll The Franklin resident was one of the eight selected as a Global Messenger last year and proudly represents the Counties Manukau region. The key focus of the programme is to equip messengers with the skills and confidence to take on the leadership role of ambassa-dor. The students are also em-powered to speak out on behalf of their fellow athletes and raise awareness of Special Olympics within their communities.

The class of 2015 travelled to Wellington last Thursday for their

graduating ceremony, which was in the West Foyer of the Beehive. Hosted by Special Olympics Chair, and MP for Rangitikei, Ian McKelvie, the ceremony was de-scribed as a celebration for the athletes’ achievements and al-lowed them to put into practice the skills they had learnt and de-veloped during their training.

All of the messengers were assigned roles for the day, with Rachell designated to give a speech on behalf of her class in front of 50 representatives, which included parents and regional MPs.

For Rachell, the highlight of be-coming a Global Messenger was travelling to Wellington by herself and gaining the confidence to be able to meet new people, which included her fellow classmates.

“The global messengers pro-gramme is about putting on a

proud face and strong voice for-ward for Special Olympics New Zealand,” explained Rachell. “I learnt so much, which includ-

ed speech writing, voice pitch and good eye contact, and I also learnt a lot about myself. I am re-ally looking forward to spreading

the word about Special Olympics and to share my journey so far.”

Since completing her train-ing, Rachell will now help Spe-cial Olympics increase aware-ness and understanding for peo-ple with intellectual disabilities within the Counties Manukau region. Her role will also involve her speaking on behalf of fellow athletes, to help her clubs recruit new athletes and volunteers, and actively take part in fundraising ventures.

The former Tuakau College student had a stroke nine years ago and spent two months in hospital learning to speak again. She joined the Special Olym-pics four years ago and regularly trains with the Counties swim team, and volunteers her time at the Palms Retirement Village and the Pukekohe Library.

CALL 111

Police ReportBy Sergeant Graeme Wood, Waiuku Police

Well, local Police have been onto the Auckland Council Website, requested and downloaded permits for our vehicles to be on Karioitahi Beach.

It was a very simple process, easy to do, took a matter of a couple of minutes and I would encourage any of you that drive on the beach to do the same. They are free to do and valid for one year from date of downloading them.

I have spoken with and are to meet with the Council over the beach this week. If Police locate vehicles on the beach without the necessary permit, details of the driver will be forwarded to the Auckland Council and you could face sanctions including a fine.

I would remind you though that as I have previously said “The beach is a road and all road rules apply on the beach”. That means you need a driver’s licence, your vehicle should be regis-tered and have a Warrant of Fitness, you must wear you seat belt or have a helmet on if on a motorbike. It also means you shouldn’t drink and drive on the beach and any bad driving behaviour on the

beach will be treated exactly the same as if it occurred on any normal road, be-cause “the beach is a road”.

With Labour Weekend here this weekend I would ask that if you are going away you secure your property. Make sure your house is fully locked and secure, all windows and doors are shut and locked, this includes any sheds or separate garages. Lock away any items, such as ladders and furniture, that a bur-glar could use to break into your house.

Arrange for friends, family or neigh-bours to keep an eye on your property and leave them your contact details just in case something does happen

If you are travelling away on the roads drive safely, don’t take unneces-sary risks, share the driving or have reg-ular breaks when driving. Remember it’s not how long it takes to get there and back, it is getting there and back safely that really counts.

Have a great Labour Weekend and as I write this I hope we take care of the French and will all be supporting the All Blacks in the semi-finals as well.

Go the All Blacks.Cheers, Woody

Stay safe this labour weekend

Sep: Why the siren

sounded...

“The Pokeno commu-nity has been brilliant,” says local resident Teresa Wine in response to help she has received after her house on Market Street burning down on July 10.

Teresa’s family: hus-band, son and nephew barely got out in time. Within minutes the house was well ingulfed in flames. Teresa herself wasn’t home, having just nipped down the road to see a friend.

The neighbours came over to help and give the devastated family hugs. “Within 24 hours we had enough clothes for all of us, were put up in a mo-tel, had meals and the do-nations just didn’t stop. It was very touching. We were humbled by the community response,” she says.

“Bedding, blankets, clothes, a bag full of un-derwear in all the right siz-es for everyone, toasters, a microwave, dog food, pillows and dinnerware came our way.”

Teresa’s first reaction was shock, seeing five fire appliances in front of her house and flames burst-ing through the roof and

then disbelief, but soon also relief, even joy, when she realised the family, even the dog, had all made it out in time. All their pos-sessions, including many precious items were lost in the blaze.

Initially homed by friends and neighbours, three months later they have bunked down in two caravans parked in the backyard of their burnt out home. Friends pro-vide the chance to regu-larly do laundry and have showers. Life is now down to the bare basics.

“Today, life is simple but sufficient. We have what we need,” Teresa says but admits she real-ly misses her old crockpot.

Describing herself as a pragmatic person, she says she prefers to focus on the future rather than dwell on all the bad luck she’s been having.

“The fire is one of those things. The impor-tant thing is how you get back up after such a di-saster. We are happy to all be in one piece and real-ly grateful for the ongoing support and compassion from the local communi-ty,” she says.

Family thanks Pokeno After teaching in Rarotonga for nearly three years, Simon Drewery will now call Franklin home, as he recently joined Waiuku Primary School as the newly appointed Principal.

ll It was always planned that Simon, and his fam-ily, were to return to New Zealand this year. After seeing the role advertised, Simon was surprised to see what Waiuku had on offer. “I had never been to the township before, and it looked like it had a great community feel to it.” Simon was treated to a large welcome at the school powhiri last Mon-day, and has been blown away by how positive and engaging the parents and caregivers of the Waiuku Primary community have been towards him.

In Rarotonga, Simon was Principal of Te Uki Ou School, a private International School. His high-lights as Principal in Rarotonga included growing the school roll, achieving the top academic and cultural results in Rarotonga this year and having his wife, Denise and two children, Sigourney (15) and Sebastian (12), with him at Te Uki Ou. “While Living and teaching in Rarotonga was a highly re-warding experience, I am looking forward to set-tling in Waiuku for the next five years at least,” says Simon. Prior to moving to Rarotonga, he was Prin-cipal of Waihi Central School for eight years.

Simon intends to use the final term of 2015 to get to know the students, staff and local commu-nity. He says he has a few exciting plans for the school’s future. “All parents want their children to be happy, safe and learning at school, and I aim to create an environment which will be exactly that. All the foundations are in place, and I hope to fo-cus, not just on the traditional areas of learning, but on a broad spectrum, including E-learning and ICT. We want to create independent learners and future problem solvers.”

Simon would like to acknowledge the hard work that has been invested by the school staff, PTA and Board of Trustees, which has certainly made the transition into the new role easier.

Beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 2 Peter 1:5-7.

Point the youth to Peter’s ladder of eight rounds, and place their feet, not on the highest round, but on the lowest, and with earnest solicitation urge them to climb to the very top. Christ . . . is the ladder. The base is planted firmly on the earth in His humanity; the topmost round reaches to the throne of God in His divinity. The humanity of Christ embraces fallen humanity, while His divinity lays hold upon the throne of God. We are saved by climbing round after round of the ladder, looking to Christ, clinging to Christ, mounting step by step to the height of Christ, so that He is made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption. Faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and charity are the rounds of this ladder. All these graces are to be manifested in the Christian character; and “if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: for so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.”

You are not to think that you must wait until you have perfected one grace before cultivating another. No; they are to grow up together...; every day that you live, you can be perfecting the blessed attributes fully revealed in the character of Christ.... Do not become overwhelmed with the great amount of work you must do in your lifetime, for you are not required to do it all at once. Let every power of your being go to each day’s work, improve each precious opportunity, appreciate the helps that God gives you, and make advancement up the ladder of progress step by step. Remember that you are to live but one day at a time, that God has given you one day, and heavenly records will show how you have valued its privileges and opportunities. May you so improve every day given you of God, that at last you may hear the Master say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

So how can we connect to Heaven, we must “Pray without ceasing.” This is the admonition given us in 1 Thessalonians 5:17. Prayer is the breath of the soul, the channel of all blessings. As . . . the repentant soul offers its prayer, God sees its struggles, watches its conflicts, and marks its sincerity. He has His finger upon its pulse, and He takes note of every throb. Not a feeling thrills it, not an emotion agitates it, not a sorrow shades it, not a sin stains it, not a thought or purpose moves it, of which He is not cognizant. That soul was purchased at an infinite cost, and is loved with a devotion that is unalterable. Prayer to the Great Physician

for the healing of the soul brings the blessing of God. Prayer unites us one to another and to God. Prayer brings Jesus to our side, and gives new strength and fresh grace to the fainting, perplexed soul. . . .

Christ our Saviour was tempted in all points like as we are, yet He was without sin. He took human nature, being made in fashion as a man, and his necessities were the necessities of a man. He had bodily wants to be supplied, bodily weariness to be relieved. It was by prayer to His Father that He was braced for duty and for trial. Day by day He followed His round of duty, seeking to save souls. . . . And He spent whole nights in prayer in behalf of the tempted ones. . . .

The night seasons of prayer which the

Saviour spent in the mountain or in the desert were essential to prepare Him for the trials He must meet in the days to follow. He felt the need of the refreshing and invigorating of soul and body, that He might meet the temptations of Satan; and those who are striving to live His life will feel this same need. . . .

He says to us, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” Christ alone can make us capable of responding when He says, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart.” This means that every day self must be denied. Christ can give us the noble resolve, the will to suffer, and to fight the battles of the Lord with persevering energy. The weakest, aided by divine grace, may have strength to be more than conqueror. {Mar 84-85}

So how do we successfully climb Peter’s Ladder? It is by the acceptance and application of current knowledge, by daily digging into Scripture for more depth and more knowledge, and then having a Prayer Life that is robust that is ongoing (Pray without ceasing) that helps us leave sin alone by resisting sin and reducing the sinful tendencies within. We then grow in Grace and Knowledge which lifts one Heavenward and closer to more perfectly reflecting our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 3:17-20 “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints what [is] the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.”

Dear Reader; please take the opportunity daily to have Jesus Christ dwelling within.

Blast to the Past is this weekend and this year the Waiuku Business and Development Association have promised a new, tailor-made fireworks display from one of the largest distributors in the industry.

ll York Corporation Ltd is a NZ company started in 1948 and is recognised as one of the largest fireworks suppliers worldwide. They have been supplying many of New Zealand’s firework display operators with fire-works for their displays for over 60 years.

Safety is paramount at all of their events, and the Wai-uku Business and Develop-ment Association and the py-rotechnics have gone ‘above

and beyond’ to make this event as safe as possible.

This year, the WBDA are asking for a gold coin dona-tion to support the Waiuku Estuary Restoration Trust. The community’s donation will go towards the amazing work the Mudlarks are do-ing to restore Waiuku’s wa-terways. These funds will be used for sharpening and re-placing broken tools and fuel costs. The action in the town centre starts at 6pm, with live entertainment from the band Switch, the Pukeoware School Jump Jam team, a children’s carnival and the huge open-air market. This year’s market has fantastic range of arts and crafts, cloth-ing and gifts, plus a great va-riety of food and treats to tempt the crowds. The fif-teen minute fireworks dis-

play is scheduled to start at approximately 8.30pm on the Tamakae Reserve. Bring the family out and be part of this spectacular fun evening in Waiuku.

Get ready for a weekend extravaganza

While Labour weekend sees the beginning of Glen-brook Vintage Railway’s 38th operating season, it also witnesses the 100th birthday of one of the GVR’s stal-wart locomotives, and Franklin residents are being giv-en an open invite to the birthday celebrations.

In order to celebrate Ww 644’s mechanical mile-stone, the Glenbrook Vintage Railway is throwing ‘644 a birthday party on Monday, October 26. The party will be held at Glenbrook Station and will see a couple of

lucky attendees have the chance to feed ‘644 a birth-day cake straight into the burning heart of her firebox. To add to the atmosphere a 1950s Bell 47 M*A*S*H hel-icopter will be giving rides over the local countryside. The team will also be holding a competition to see who can be the fastest over 150 meters on the, even older, hand jigger.

The GVR is operating all Labour weekend. Trains de-part Glenbrook Station from 11am until 3:30pm.

Community-minded Sharon England and her family have been running Top Notch Engraving and Book Exchange at 28 King Street in Pukekohe for the past four and a half years. They supply local schools, sports clubs and social groups with trophies and en-gravings, sell corporate gifts and support commu-nity initiatives whenever possible, besides continu-ing with the book exchange.

Top Notch has been a favourite for 30 years and book lovers still turn up regularly to swap their books for a new one. The Englands enjoy being much more than just a shop and some of their community proj-ects include collecting old prescription glasses for the Fred Hollows Foundation, supporting Middle-more Foundation’s Jammies in June and selling tick-ets and calendars to help the fundraising for John Connolly.

Aaron’s trip of a lifetime

Emma Sharplin - [email protected]

llWith only two days notice, a health check and having to cram several assess-ments into five hours, Aaron disembarked from Prince’s Wharf in Auckland on Sep-tember 25, on a ten day voyage around the islands in the Hauraki Gulf.

Along with 39 other students from around New Zealand, the teenager from Waiuku College not only learnt valuable life lessons from the trip, but made new friends and pushed personal limits that he didn’t think he could.

“I was an incredibly shy person, but went on the trip with the goal of making new friends. It has certainly helped with character development.”

Aaron started each day with a 6.30am swim, which doubled as a shower, fol-lowed by breakfast and then cleaning of the ship. Once cleaning duties were com-plete, the students then participated in

daily activities, which including hiking on the islands they visited and learning to sail the ship.

“You had to work as a team otherwise it just wouldn’t work. I was able to push my limits and develop leadership skills. It was really good fun, exhausting, but real-ly enjoyable.”

The most memorable moments of the voyage for Aaron was being able to swim with dolphins, sailing next to whales and the bonfire at Smokehouse Bay.

“I had wanted to do a trip like this earlier in the year, and had fundraised extensive-ly for it. While I was gutted that it had fallen through, I am extremely thankful to be giv-en this opportunity on the Spirit of Adven-ture after my mum spotted the opening on the Post Newspaper’s Facebook page.”

Aaron would like to say a huge thank you to the people behind the Spirit of Ad-venture for making the trip such an enjoy-able and awesome experience.

A A RO N Lamont has just returned from what he describes as a trip of a lifetime, which was a voyage upon the Spirit of Adventure.

“I would recommend anyone who wants to do a trip like this to take any opportunity given.”

WB&DA Mix and Mingle

Another golden opportunity has arisen for a boy or girl, between the age of 15 - 18, to go on a ten day voyage on The Spirit Of Adventure. This trip will be a fully funded one and is a great opportuni-ty for one lucky teenager in Franklin. For more in-formation, email: [email protected]

Unlike the real show this one is not funny...

Len’s show is no longer funny, and should be cancelled in october next year soon after the local government elections.

llTransport remains a hot political pota-to and no one seems brave enough to sort it out. All we seem to get from Auckland Council,

Auckland Transport and our local government is soggy chips, lumpy mash and a horrible tasting potato salad.

No one can stomach this hot political pota-to. Electrify Pukekohe or bust seems to be the call from the masses I spoke to at the recent transport meeting held at Pukeko-he Station. I’m starting to

steve’s soapboxA note from

question if it is the right call at this point in time? According to Jon Reeves from the Public Trans-port Users Association it is vital that Pukekohe gets electric trains. He was handing out a survey on the platform asking people to put pressure on our local MP, Andrew Bayly, to do more for the electrification process and to make it happen. Here’s the problem in Mr Brown’s LTP (Ten Year - Long Term Plan) there is no provision for the elec-trification of the line. It is not going to happen un-der Mr Brown’s watch. It is estimated it will cost over $110 million to elec-trify the 16-18km track from Papakura to Puke-kohe. The Hon. Simon Bridges is not going to

give us the money need-ed for this but is spend-ing $250 million on a road widening project in Takanini.

Mr Brown what have you done? With your focus on transport, you will be remembered, but for all the wrong reasons. Mr Brown, you stand to go down in his-tory as the worst mod-ern day Mayor in New Zealand when it comes to solving our transport issues. You will have spent billions on a net-work that everyone oth-er than yourself knows will not solve our trans-port issues. Thanks to you we have a transport levy and a mountain of debt. You will forever be remembered as the Mayor who never elec-trified Pukekohe, even though it was not your fault. Mayor Brown you could have had the vi-sion and the common sense to look after the whole of Auckland whi-ch you failed to do.

As has been reported recently, there is a bit of momentum for the upgrade of the skate park in Waiuku. I attended the meeting a couple of Sundays ago put together by some adults. I was not only impressed, but really energised over the way in which a few of the younger ones there were not only prepared to put their hands up for the benefit of others but al-so with the attitude.

Often we older folk can be a bit grumpy with the younger generation and their outlook on life. It was proba-bly the same when I was a kid quite a few years back. But I honestly came away from the meeting enthused about the attitude which was more about doing their bit and less about entitlement. A sense of entitlement is something I en-counter a lot across a wide section of our community and is one of the more chal-lenging aspects of being a decision mak-er where we have to consider the wider good for the communities we represent.

Skate parks seem to be the subject of the month across Franklin. We have been involved in discussions from Clev-edon to Hunua, Pukekohe to Clarks Beach and of course Waiuku. As has been announced recently, Pukekohe has been the benefactor of some regional funding aligned with growth which will result this financial year in a large and quite spectacular skate park facility to

be built near Eco Light Stadium. This will not stop us however looking

at ways in which we can fund upgrades or provision of skate facilities in those places mentioned as we are very aware of the restraints of a lack of public trans-port and the tyranny of distance and re-liance on the mum and dad taxi service. I see a real upside though for those liv-ing in places like Waiuku and Patuma-hoe with the new bus network planned for 2016 in that with the proposed low fare structure for cross zone travel, get-ting to and from Pukekohe to enjoy the things like the new skate park, cinema and other attractions will be achievable and won’t break the bank.

There is plenty going on in Franklin over the next month or so in terms of events and I encourage people to take advantage of them. Be it the Blast to the Past in Waiuku, Clevedon A & P Show or the V8 Supercars including the out-standing drive in cinema and outdoor movie being held at Eco Light Stadium as part of the V8s, it is going to be a great time and we need to relax and enjoy our-selves.

I really encourage people who are on Facebook to search out the Franklin Lo-cal Board page, it is a very good way of keeping up with what is happening lo-cally within the Council world and best of all it is free. Like us, it isn’t so bad!

A monitoring programme, safe access to the beach and Waikato District Council discussions about the final recommendations, to be held in November, are among immediate responses to the situation in Port Waikato.

Janine Baalbergen

ll As erosion continues to eat away at the dunes below the surf club car park at Sunset Beach some short term mea-sures are now in place before final decisions on the future of the area will be made.

Immediate actions to be taken include a clean-up day to remove major debris from the beach during the week before Labour Weekend. Moni-toring of the access routes to the beach from the car-

park, as well as the public infrastructure, will be car-ried out. Health and safe-ty items such as fences, warning signs and bar-riers, retaining, blocking off or removing of public asset infrastructure, ad-vising and collaborating with stakeholders to try to keep the beach access open are on the agenda. Discussions on health and safety issues and try-ing to isolate, minimise or remove major hazards.

A consultation doc-ument has been pub-lished and can be viewed at: www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz.

In November 2015 council will decide on options on offer, and that decision will be put to public consultation between December and February. In March the fi-nal decision will be made and published while shortly after that the nec-essary work will begin.

Erosion measures planned for the Port

Waikato Council prepare for inorganicsll From November 1, Waikato Council will be collecting inorganic re-fuse such as unwanted furniture, lawnmowers, carpet, televisions or appliances from house-holds in the Waikato dis-trict that have a black-bag kerbside refuse and recycling collection.

While Meremere, Huntly and Glen Murray are some of areas that have been selected for this collection, Tuakau, Onewhero, Pokeno and Port Waikato won’t miss out either; however resi-dents will need to deliv-er and pay for the items to be disposed of at the allocated areas.

The Tuakau inorgan-ic refuse day will be held on Saturday, November 28, from 8.30am – 12pm at the Tuakau Sale Yards. The cost of the inorgan-ic is $15 per trailer load.

General Manager Ser-vice Delivery, Tim Harty, says communities need to make themselves aware of the collection dates for their area and most importantly when to put their inorganic re-fuse on the kerbside.

“It is important to

make sure your pile of inorganic items is less than two metres long by one metre wide, and are placed on the kerb-side on your specified day, not before. Placing items out too early cre-ates an eyesore, leads to scavenging and general untidiness.” “In recent years during this col-lection we have expe-rienced an increase in illegal dumping of inor-ganic waste as house-holds use it as an op-portunity to dump un-wanted items. This is extremely unfair on the communities who pay for this service,” Mr Harty explains.

It is important that anyone from outside the district pay for their own waste disposal and not force this cost on our ratepayers. We’re ask-ing the community to report any suspected il-legal dumping to us so that action can be taken. If you do see anything suspicious please call 0800 492 452.”

Residents with inor-ganic queries, can con-tact Metrowaste on 0800 130 908.

BOXES 1 – 16 – Community Gardens sponsorshipEmma to write – Contact Grace 027 255 7316

The Hamilton Estate Community Garden is currently bursting at the seams with fresh produce after being given a helping hand by Osborne Realty.

After being approached by Grace van den Brink, the team have organised a continuing relationship where Osborne’s regularly donate seeds or seedlings when needed.

Grace says this has been a huge benefit for the gar-den and the residents of Hamilton Estate.

“This garden has been a staple part of our community for the last seven years, providing food for our neigh-bourhood. And the best part is that it is free. Osborne’s have been so generous with their help, we are incredibly grateful.” Grace explains the garden has become a com-munity initiative and the residents have fully taken ownership of the area.

“It has grown from the same people tending to it, to now everyone wanting to lend a hand. We have the

people coming in to compost their scraps and the local kindergarten comes down to learn about growing veg-etables. It has become an asset for our community and it is great to see it in use.”

Residents have also learnt essential horticulture skills, explains Grace, which has been a huge help for those who go through times of hardship.

“There are times when you are struggling, and you open the cupboards and they are bare. The skills that the community have learnt from the garden can be put to use in their own backyard, and residents always know that they can rely on the garden to help feed their whanau.”

Grace explained that it was thanks to the Percy Hamilton Trust for allowing the community to have use of the land.

“We are very privileged to have Osborne’s and the Trust to help us, which is all for the good of the people.”

This garden has been a staple part of our community for the last seven years, providing food for our neighbourhood. And the best part is that it is free. Osborne’s have been so generous with their help, we are incredibly grateful.”

The Spur winged ploverA pair of plovers have set up house in one of our paddocks. The nest is a hollow in the ground and lined with dry grass.

Ngaire Deed - [email protected]

There were three eggs, dark green/brown speckled with black/brown spots and about the size of a size five hen’s egg, in the nest. They are now fluffy spotted chicks that are extremely hard to see in the grass.

The plover usually does not stray more than a four to five kilometer radius. They can live up to 13 years, and mate for life, so we will have our family around for a while.

Many nests fail because of stock damage. This nest was at the top of a hill and the stock is not in that paddock at present so the chicks should be OK. They fledge at about eight weeks, but they stay as a fam-ily unit for around eight months.

The adult birds are about the size of a magpie, handsome with a white breast and belly, black-head and brown back. Their ‘fac-es’ and bill are bright yellow. They have small spurs at the elbows of their wings. They are very noisy and screech loudly when disturbed.

T h e y protect their young vigor-ously and can be seen attack-ing harrier hawks in flight.

The plover original-ly arrived in New Zea-land from Australia and settled in Southland about 1932. From there they have slowly spread north. The first breeding pair were record-ed in the lower North Is-land in 1973. By 1980 they were well established in the southern and east-ern parts of the North Island.

As adult birds establish their own territory they have been mov-ing northwards and are now fair-ly common throughout New Zea-land.

The pair at home have been around for some time and are well settled. The bird that is not incubat-ing feeds close by and sounds the

alarm if anyone or anything ven-tures in the direction of the nest. The incubating bird takes flight and both birds fly around making one heck of a noise. The new fam-ily could create a few battles with the harriers that nest in the bush which is adjacent to their nest site. It could be a very noisy few weeks until the chicks can take care of themselves.

They also like to ad-vise their clients about what to look out for in this regard, as poor workmanship is not always immedi-ately apparent to an untrained eye. Signature Homes believe they deliver the best service, the best design-ers and the best contract builders - from Papakura through to Franklin and beyond, and their team has built literally hundreds of beautiful homes for Kiwi families.“Combining our pride and passion for exceptional craftsmanship with the renowned quality, and proven systems and support of Signature Homes has given us the opportunity to be better at everything that we do”,

We have a range of homes and house & land package options to suit most clients, and if one of the Signature designs does not suit your requirements, then we’ll design a home for you that does.” That means clients can choose from the simplicity of a house & land package, a complete knock down and rebuild, subdivision or a new dream home from

Free desexing targets critical cat over-populationll In an effort to reduce the number of cats born with no home and nowhere to go, SPCA Auckland is offering free desex-ing for cats from October 19 to November 13, and includes Pukekohe and Papaku-ra. Their goal is to desex 1000 cats in this time period, which will potentially pre-vent the birth of thousands of unwanted kittens.

These 16 priority suburbs were identi-fied after reviewing the source of the SPCA’s incoming cats and kittens. The team found that 50% of them came from these suburbs.

During spring and summer, which is classed as kitten season, the number of incoming animals coming through the SPCA’s doors can be overwhelming, and puts an immense strain on their staff, vol-unteers and limited resources. The SPCA receives between 5000 and 8000 kittens each year, and ‘kitten season’ started six weeks early this year. Already their hospi-tal has litters of kittens and their mums ar-riving daily.

SPCA Auckland would like to thank the local vet clinics who are helping with this desexing initiative. The support of these

Calf clubs take centre stage

Last weekend saw many local schools transform into barnyards as children took part in their respective annual calf club days.

Chickens, goats, lambs, calves and even a piglet took centre stage as they all participated in leading, calling and rear-ing events. The Post was on call over the weekend and captured several snaps from various schools. Visit our facebook page for more photographs.

Clubs are key for new Steelers coach

It’s all about the clubs says Darryl Suasua, Counties Manukau’s new head coach, a passionate supporter of club rugby.

Janine Baalbergenll “If you want to reach the top you need to play well for your local club and others things will happen because

of that,” he says. As coach of Counties’ champions Bombay he has experienced what that really means.

As coach of Bombay he won the lo-cal club championship two years in a row. “Bombay’s secret is that it is a play-ers’ club. The club listens to the players. When the guys have an idea they get a chance to act on it. The committee is

fabulous. They help players with life outside rugby and not just with odd jobs ,but with a career. They in-volve their families and celebrate milestones, such as reaching 50 games as a player.” He reckons two thirds of the Bombay team have been with the club for years, and received their blazers for playing 50 games for their club. “Next season there will be another five to join these ranks.”

Suasua says he’s been coaching since he was 15 years old. “My mum always volunteered my services as a coach, including coaching my three younger sisters in basketball, netball and softball,” he says.

“Coaching is a people business, and it’s about build-ing relationships,” he says. As a teacher doing physi-cal education, he was put in charge of the school rugby team and progressed from there to Auckland Marist, where he coached guys like Zinzan Brooke and John Kirwan. Suasua reckons he got branded as a coach in his very first job. He also worked for fitness expert Jim Blair in his gym.“I wanted to be educator. I enjoy coaching as well as educating other coaches,” he says. Being a full-time head coach, he admits, is a bit scary, as there is not much security in that job. He’s dropping all his other jobs to pour his heart and soul into the Steelers.

“I am confident we have a lot of good guys in our clubs to fill the team,” says Suasaua. He says the re-al challenge for him will be to blend the Super Rugby players with the club players in the team. While it is the clubs that make the union, it is the play-ers that make the clubs, according to Suasua. Good support for all players is crucial, he says. “A team is good because the players are good.”

Davida White, coach of Counties Manukau Heat, is keen to grow women’s rugby throughout Franklin. Ardmore and Manurewa have women’s teams with Pukekohe and Papakura starting one next season.

Counties Manukau Heat made the semi finals this year and were nar-rowly beaten by Welling-ton and near fulltime too.No mean feat for a fairly new team. By the time they reached the semis the team were all so beat-en and bruised that going on would have been im-possible.

Heat’s coach keen to champion women’s rugby

“We wouldn’t have had a team to play in the final,” their coach says. “The girls are highly mo-tivated now that they have had a taste of being in the top four of the na-tional competition. They will be coming back next year.”

Counties Heat is home to at least nine players with international caps for either New Zealand or Samoa and growing the team means the club competition needs to grow to provide a pool of good players to build up and sustain the Heat.

This year reaching the finals was a biggie, de-spite many top players being off with injuries throughout the season.

“It was only during the first game of the season that everyone played, af-ter that they started to fall away one by one. We beat the top team Canterbury by 50+ points too in that first game.”

Had they all been avail-able one can only imag-ine what might have been.

“The girls really dug deep to try and get in-to the final,” says coach White.

Husband Darryl Sua-sua, who is the new head coach for the Steelers was her assistant coach. He says he hopes to con-tinue the good relation-ship Tana Umaga built between the Steelers and the Heat.

“He’s always made the women feel welcome, the two teams often trained together and he would al-ways come over for a chat and to wish them good luck when the Heat were curtain raisers for Steel-ers’ home games.”

The future is looking good for Counties Manu-kau Heat and any girls or women wanting to have a go should contact their local club regarding a lo-cal women’s team.

The “Yellow Ball” haggle was played in teams of four at Waiuku Golf recently. Each group was given one yel-low ball, three white balls and a team card. The aim was for one player to tee off using the yellow and all Stable-ford points were marked on the team card from each player on each hole. If the yellow ball was lost, then that marked the end of the game for the team. The winning team pictured above with a combined Stabl-eford (won on countback) 38 points. John Toogood, Morrin McDonald, Louis King, Tane Dawson Te Kani.

“Yellow Ball” haggle

The first tournament of the season was held last Thursday with fine weather and first rate greens, and sixteen teams contesting. A well supported raffle was held with excellent prizes alongside a lovely morn-ing tea, made possible thanks to our generous spon-sors. The winning teams were: 1st - Len Corney, Bar-ry Williams and Paul Miller, of Pukekohe. 2nd - Bette Holmes, Gloria Swain and Barry Swain, of Waiuku. 3rd - Joy Sinclair, Peter Sinclair and Richard Sheehan, also of Waiuku. The next tournament will be held on the 19th November.

Waiuku Bowls ResultsCovic golf 2015 finals daySeventy-seven golfing vets turned up at Onewhero

Golf Club on the most beautiful of blue sky and wind-less spring days. With two season long Counties-Ma-nukau Vets Inter Club trophies up for grabs the com-petition was intense but friendly and in good humour.

In the first division COVIC Shield competition, the Waikare team were back to their very best form. Team members Rick Nathan, Dirk Korver, Ray Mako, Jae-Sung Cha, Barry Young and Doug Sanderson all returned between 38 to 40 points a-piece and with a best four players team aggregate of 155 points they proved to be deserved Shield winners for 2015. The final competition places were Maramarua, second, Hauraki, third, Clarks Beach, fourth, Huntly, fifth and Manukau, sixth.

In the second COVIC Plate division, Awhitu pulled off a surprise win on the day with 148 points with One-whero (143) and Pukekohe (141) also doing very well. Pukekohe’s improved form moved them from third to second at the expense of Waiuku but neither of these teams could do enough to catch a stumbling Pakuran-ga team, whose fifth place on the day was enough to

secure the Plate for 2015. There was a suggestion that Waiuku’s drop to third place could be put down to some negative karma resulting from their having mislaid the Plate trophy for which they were defending champi-ons. Fortunately, it was found in the nick of time to be awarded to the victorious Pakuranga team of Noel Bish-op, Kevin Dumper, Alan McGhie, Max Tomes, Barry Simmonds, Kevin Gibbs and Henry Graham.

The final COVIC Gold Cup match play challenge fizzed due to a default result after the Wattle Downs challengers fronted one player short, leaving Manukau as Cup holders until early February 2016. Maramarua will be the first-up challengers for which Manukau will have a home course advantage.

The COVIC Claret Jacket was awarded to Pukeko-he player Murray Glasgow who shot 41 points off a 17 handicap including a two. Next event is the annual CO-VIC Champs, an individual strokeplay competition event, to be held at Maramarua on Friday, November 13; with a season ending COVIC Chirstmas Ambrose Pairs event being hosted by Waiuku GC on Tuesday, December 1.

Gold success for Pukekohe swimmersP U K E KO H E Swimming Club sent a large team of 46 swimmers to contest the Counties Junior Winter Championships in Manurewa last weekend, which saw nearly 200 children take part in the annual event.

Above: Tavarnya Howe, Zeal Jones, Meg Grey, Janaye Burns were part of the relay team entered last weekend.

Above: Just a few of the 46 swimmers that represented Pukekohe Swimming Club at the Counties Junior Winter Champs.

many of the younger swimmers some of whom were swimming in their first ma-jor meet. Millie Norman, Olivia Nichol, Max Brears, Roxy Deihl, Keara Kiernan-Erb, Summer Ngavavia, Holly Owen, Le-vi Potman, Tyler McNaughten, Charlie Millington, Jahko Tohaia, Robson Wal-

lace and Sharon Wessels all swam per-sonal best times in all of their races.

Coaches Jim Ruiterman, Maki Jones and Nelly Duthie were delighted with their swimmers’ achievements, with many more who were just split seconds off nationals qualifying times, and have

reset their goals to achieve this. The club has two club nights coming up, where the swimmers race to achieve personal bests and meet qualifying time stand-ards.

Pukekohe is one of only a few clubs in New Zealand that run regular qualifying

club nights for their members, which is due to their student’s parents qualifying as swim meet officials. The continued support of the Franklin Pool and Leisure Centre is also a huge bonus for the club, as it enables them to book Saturday eve-nings for these meets.

Employment Contracts Legally required and highly recommendedIf you have your own business and you employ anyone at all, then there is a legal requirement (since October 2000) for you to furnish your employees with an employment contract. The penalties for failing to provide an employment contract, until now, have rarely been exercised by the courts unless there is a dispute. By then it is too late and many employers have suffered financial penalties for failing in their obligations in this regard. However, with the changing times there is every likelihood that a “crack down” on delinquent employers will result in widespread issuing of penalties. That aside, the merits of having valid and well-constructed employment contracts cannot be overstated. A well prepared contract will protect both parties from most disputes simply by defining clearly the obligations and expectations of the parties involved. It is a fact that employers have far less chance of winning a dispute if no contract exists. The benefits to the employer are multifold. Even the ninety day trial provision which most employers will be loosely familiar with cannot apply in the absence of an employment agreement or even in cases where the contract or procedures towards the contract are flawed. Proper preparation and processing of a contract is essential. Some employers are of the mistaken belief that they can hire someone as a “contractor” and this will remove their legal requirements to issue a contract. From a practical point of view they couldn’t be further from the truth. The Employee/Contractor argument is complicated and is often seen by the courts as simply a way of avoiding the employer’s obligation under law, particularly in relation to taxation. Employers who lose a battle on this subject are usually penalised far higher than they would otherwise be in a straight employee situation. Employment Relations Consultants are specialists in the composition and preparation of Individual employment contracts (IEA). We can tailor an agreement to your specific requirements with special attention to issues which may be unique to your situation. There is a charge to set the first of the contracts up and this will be determined by a number of factors (how many staff etc.) so the cost may vary. We prefer to provide individual quotations for the setup. Once you are in our system we are able to provide (at relatively short notice) new contracts, letters of appointment and everything needed to bring a new employee into the fold for very little ongoing cost.We can discuss this with you via a free initial consultation – please ring 09 238 3025 to arrange. Employment disputes are expensive and time consuming. They will often cost more than any financial compensation which might result because of the distraction from your business which requires your attention at all times. More than that though, you can go about your daily business secure in the knowledge that your employees are under no illusion as to what is expected of them.
